Anakin became infatuated with Padme when he was about 10 years old. Ten years later, having not seen her since, he's still utterly smitten with her. He even calls her by her familiar name even though he is a Padawan Jedi and she is a Galactic Senator.

She tells him a relationship between them would never work...while wearing a black dominatrix outfit in front of a fireplace.

Does anyone else find the Anakin-Padme relationship a little creepy?

Yep. Anakin/Padme was the only major problem I had with the prequels. It was creepy and unbelievable.

I find it incredibly dysfunctional, but not exactly creepy. Padme is a tightly wound and controlled politician who meets a 'bad boy' who thinks the universe revolves around her. I don't find it terribly unbelievable that she would ignore her better angels and fall for him.

Of course, I think the "dominatrix outfit" is intended to be her sending a mixed signal.

Lets not forget that Padme has no problem with Anakin killing women and children "to be angry is to be human", unless of course they are Jedi children then thats not cool at all "obi wan said terrible things he said you killed younglings".

So yes I find there relationship very creepy indeed.

Also, the fact that in all of little over a week as spent between the 2 of them ( at least 3 in TPM, and 4 in AOTC but this is only an estimate), they decide that they are meant for each other and get married.

The Padme-Anakin relationship/love affair/marriage is one of the most unbelievable and awkward things in the Prequels.

Not to mention that it's not a dominatrix outfit....:p

But yeah, M_S pretty much posted my feelings on the matter. They're emotionally disfunctional due to their professions and lack of time for a social life; that's not creepy, that's most marriages :p

Maybe the reason the A/P Romance is seen as creepy is because it shows two very flawed people. We are disturbed by them because we expect the usual movie fare- two people who are idealized and have an ultimately tragic romance.

Padme showed one flaw with the mention of the Sand People. She didn't really react to it because I imagine that in many places, Sand People are viewed as mindless savages, almost animals, and so their lives are 'not worth as much' as a regular citizen of the Republic.

And Anakin in some form thought that the Jedis' rules applied to others but didn't apply to him, otherwise he wouldn't have broken them.

They both could have broken off the relationship. Padme wanted to have a family too bad, and Anakin was not willing to accept that sometimes one path you choose means that some others aren't open anymore. Padme could have chosen some other person to settle down with, she knew the Jedis' prohibitions, and Ani should have been the better man and told her she needed to let him go for his own good.

    Man this post rocks.

Ive always thought the whole thing in TPM was totally creepy, how she was talking to him during that episode. Me and my friends used to call her a pedo lol.

And im glad im not the only one who thought that looked like a dominatrix outfit. Hilarious.

Well said. I think they are more "dysfunctional" than creepy, as others have pointed out. But it's also because they don't fit in with viewers' usual expectations about movie romances. On top of the other factors involved mentioned above, I would also point out that they are both in positions with high expectations, no room for failure, and very little opportunity for normal socializing with others, be it casual, friendly, or romantic (even though romantic is forbidden for one of them). All of this combines to drive them to each other even more, despite all of the reasons that they are both aware mean they "shouldn't" be together. All of this would have been made more relatable or believable if more time had been given in letting the actors work on these scenes and their interaction with each other... because I think the actors themselves are capable enough (especially Portman).

I know it's just one word, but seriously I wonder about anyone who would refer to Padmé's black dress as a dominatrix outfit. Seriously, leave the basement and get out and see the world. Better yet, experience it... :p

True, but Padme doesn't really know anything about the Tuskens other than that they're "monsters who walk like men" who snatched, tortured, and killed Anakin's mother.

Hence the quote marks. :p I just don't feel like having that argument. :p

This might be the only time Strilo and I agree on anything ( :p ) so everyone:

    RECOGNIZE

Seriously, when part of the outfit is an accesory called a choker (I'll let you people guess what it can be used for :p) it's not a dom outfit. If anything it's submissive, which implies a whole new layer to Padme: She wants to give in.

It doesn't. It merely makes it slightly less creepy for her to think that it was acceptable and explains why it's not a double-standard for her to accept what he did to the Tuskens but be horrified by what he did to the Jedi.

    Exactly.

The real question is why Padme had all this gorgeously sexy clothing just laying around to begin with, given that she hasn't dated anyone since she was 12 or so :p. What'd she do, call home while Anakin was asleep on the refugee freighter and tell Mom to go shopping?

Also, given that Jar-Jar's new CW outfit involves elbow gloves, and Padme's fireplace outfit did as well, AND a choker, does that mean that Jar-Jar is harboring hidden desires for Anakin?

    Sex-Sex Binks?

Loosen up man, why is it that people on message boards always resort to the "go out and see the world" arguement, as if they are the only person on the message board that has an exciting life.

This is without even pointing out that the easiest place to see a dominatrix outfit is from your computer...

The dress just looked funny and out of place, and its fun to joke about it as a dominatrix outfit, grow up.

Her outfit is most definitely NOT a dom outfit. Good grief, strapless =! dominatrix.

That being said, she's not exactly Mary Modesty in that scene. But I think that might have been on purpose.

And as for the original question, I think they are fairly creepy. I just don't think they had a solid enough background to make the relationship seem real. "I hate sand" "Look I make a pear float" "Whoops, I killed a tribe" "Sweet, let's get hitched."

Whatever, Across the Stars is still cool.

Yeah, in hindsight it's also foreshadowing for what eventually happens to her, as well as a look at the real Padme.

I wish there was some way to work the character-statement paragraphs from the ROTS novel into the film without being obnoxious. It'd bump off alot of repetitive threads in here, like this one. :p

We've had this same conversation about two severely disfunctional people at least six times by now. :p

Oh well, at least I managed to get a joke about Jar-Jar in there.

She has the hots for a young stud and he has Padme as IDEAL of a female. She gets the short end of the stick when the ideal tells him to buzz off.

I find all SW citizens a little weird. They aren't earthlings.

Like Leia and Padme using English quasi accents when they talk down to people. I'd say the rich and the privileged are creepy. And they are in real life too. Esp in SW, where everyone has a culture and traditions completely different from the next planetary dweller. I hope SW is spiritual preparation, because I want to be incarnated into such a place next. lol...
