Padme declares her love for Anakin before entering the Geonosis arena. She figures they're going to die. Somehow they both survive.
So they throw caution to the wind. Having faced death, anxious of what disasters lay ahead, they let go of all restraint and give themselves completely to each other.

The question is--when does this happen?

The movie implies that they got married first, by my interpretation. Is that how everybody sees it? If that is the case, what do you think of Anakin and Padme waiting until they are married to have sex? I think that kind of restraint is admirable. And given the boundaries of these films, showing Padme and Anakin consumating their love would be wildly out of place. The scene of their wedding conveys their love, while a sex scene would be better suited to convey their lust.

I think the wedding makes for the best ending of all the SW movies, and I've always thought of it as one of Lucas's best storytelling choices in the prequels. Lucas could have had the two never get married, just living together making babies. I wonder why he made the choice he did.

Well it's not as if they had a chance to do it bnefore they got married. By the time they declare their love for each other, they're about to be executed and while the Geonosians would have gotten a great show if they did it in the arena, it just isn't proper lol

After that, the Clone Wars start...Padme, as a Senator, would have been extrememly busy and Anakin would have been preparing for war so the only time they could fulfill their lust would be on the ship when Anakin is taking her back to Naboo, but even then I think they would have waited until they got there, so they could have some privacy and not risk the secret getting out and when they get to Naboo, they get married...so after that, they're alone in Padme's house...Anakin puts on some Barry White, dims the lights and lights some candles using the rockets on R2 haha

Thank goodness this isn't the JCC.

Yeah, that. But I really don't think we're meant to dwell on it so much.

Depends. If they were both virgin,
"Aw heck honey, let's just wait until we get married. Nothing to it."

If at least one of them is NOT a virgin.
    "Please, just touch it!"
    "No!"
"Just one time... See how you like it."
    "I said no!"

If both of them are non-practicing virgins.

    I appreciate the replies,

but nobody is addressing the questions I raised in my original post regarding Lucas's intent
    and other matters.

Let's try to keep this discussion serious.

Does the film imply that Anakin and Padme don't sleep together until after they are married?
If that's the case, what do you think?

[face_laugh] i just had to laugh at this one.

I would think Lucas had them married, rather than just have them hook up, to show how all that Anakin turned his back on. It's not the same thing to leave a girl who u hooked up with and got pregnant than to turn ur back on ur wife and child. It shows how commited to each other they were by having them marry imo.

I dont really sit around thinking when they first had sexo_O , but i would think it was their wedding night, just cause i think it's when they had the chance to.

I like your point about showing a higher level of commitment and sacrifice.

I'd like to think they waited until after. I'm a bit old fashioned that way. It was probably just logistics though.

It seems like I've heard their love described as a "courtly love." My husband just likes to mock the rolling in the meadow scene, "hazards of the horizontal," he calls it.

Anakin's immediate need was to have his mechanical hand attached. This likely took some amount of time to occur.

The implications and the symbology of the wedding scene, short as it is, indicates Anakin and Padme 'knew' each other (in the biblical sense) only after the wedding . . . .

    - a formal 'bonding' ceremony is depicted, significant enough to be shown in the final montage. This may have been done as a plot transition explaining a preggers Padme in ROTS
    - Padme the bride dressed in a long, flowing and lacey virgin white gown -- the color white symbolizes purity and innocence in many Earthly cultures, and GL appears to be purposefully conveying Padme's purity and innocence in the wedding scene -- she is not in her Queen garb, not in action hero jump suits, but a pure, clean and white gown.

After the wedding. I don't think that GL had them 'get to know' each other sooner than that in case that might have offended some fans.

I can't even believe someone is asking this question.

#1. Who cares? I mean really.

#2. We're never gonna know so who cares?

I thought this was a PG forum? Asking about their sexual encounters is going overboard I think.

It's fine, as long as people respond maturely.

It would have been a very bad thing if they had never gotten married. Parents really wouldn't like that message coming from Star Wars, which is largely seen as wholesome entertainment. But SW is a conglomeration of morality tales. Anakin and Padme act very morally right in getting married (one presumes before sex) even as Anakin is breaking Jedi rules. It also helps to show the dichotomy of Anakin's character. In one aspect he's a true hero, standing up for what's right and good. Acting as his conscience dictates. Then again, he also has very negative qualities, anger/rage/hatred/selfishness/arrogance, which gradually push out the good ones. We're definitely meant to see this conflict in all aspects of his character and life.

Their first time was in the Clone Wars cartoon, right after Anakin comes home with a scar on his face. You see you an exterior shot of Padme's apartment, and the light turns off to the cue of the music. IMHO I thought this was a very subtle way of saying they were about to 'do it.'

I don't think that clone wars episode is showing their first time, but rather the night that they conceive the twins, as he doesn't see her again after that, which would make sense.

Excuse me, but how do zou think Luke and Leia were born? :) Anakin may have been the result oof some divine intervention but Luke and Leia had to be conceived the old fashioned way. And since it was Luke and Leia that brought Anakin back from the dark side, it stands to reason that sex saved the galaxy in the original trilogy.

And as such talking about it should not be frowned upon. :D

I don't think they did anything before their wedding night and I'm pretty sure this was Lucas' intention.
Otherwise, he'd have had them in the same bed when Anakin had his nightmare.
Also, the first time they kiss, Padme breaks away. Obviously they hadn't had sex before then unless Padme makes some very questionable logical choices (sex ok, kissing bad).
After that, she was very keen on keeping a distance between them.
Again, there wasn't any hinting that they had had sex before dinner or after for that matter.

After that, Anakin was pretty preoccupied with his mom and Padme was still keeping him at arm's length.

They propose their love, apparently didn't have sex in the hangar, what with Anakin having lost his arm and being blasted by lightning and all.

Pre flight to Naboo, Anakin was busy getting a new arm and Padme was probably pretty damn busy with Senatorial affairs (no pun intended).

So, either they knocked boots on the way to Naboo, although I'm pretty sure Typho would be with her for the trip. While on Naboo, they sneak off to marry, consumate, and then Anakin's off to war.

Not so much a morality issue as much as a time issue.

Glad I'm not the only person wondering about that.[face_blush] I mean, one's wedding night is nerve-wracking enough without exposed wiring. It would be kind of awkward to deal with.

Your repsonse has nothing to do with my statment. For one, L&L were born 3 years after their wedding so that does not pertain to the time period of this question.

If it was so important to the story it would have been shown in a uncut version of AotC.

Exactly. It's not that important LOL. Besides Anakin and Padme saw each other probably a total of 5 times or less during the entire war. I doubt that had many encounters at all. Their marriage seemed perfect for a while because they barely knew each other.

I'm sure it was on their wedding night. Not enough time to do so. And I'm sure that Padme would've wanted to wait. Somebody had to fly the ship back to Naboo.
