This may be controversal, but I always thought that Star Wars could have been even better if there was more intimacy between the lovers. Like, wouldn't it be nice if there was a artistic scene (either at the end of AOTC or the beggining of ROTS) of Padme & Anakin making out??? Something like the scene in "300" or "Cold Mountain". Just a thought. Comments?

The problem is not a lack of intimate scenes between the lovers; it's with the fans' reactions to the scenes that already exist. The scene early in ROTS, when Padme tells Anakin of her pregnancy, is very close and intimate; and there are at least three scenes in AOTC (the wedding, the roll-in-the-grass and the kiss at the Arena) that bespeak their passion for one another. But many fans feel the two have no chemistry or that their relationship strains credibility, so these scenes are overlooked or dismissed. I for one don't think we need some kind of grope-and-slurp scene a la 300; we understand the two are in love, and in any case SW isn't about that kind of thing. It happens behind closed blast doors. ;)

I think the main problem is the lack of chemistry. I loved the beginning of ROTS because there WAS a wonderful intimacy and there are parts of ROTS where it's clear that the previous connection issues are not as prevalent, but they are just not very good together on screen. I think that's the script's fault, though.

    Yes.

The chemistry was the problem as the romance scenes made no sense.

Love doesn't always make sense you say?

Well actually, there are some basic laws (as in 'rules of thumb') of attraction.

The romance plot in the OT made perfect sense - I could really see it happen - but the PT scenes were too unbelievable.

Unless of course, Anakin was a superhuman lover. But that would have been a bit too revealing. Besides, Padme falls for him before they sleep together.

It wouldn't have helped the love story. If the actors don't have chemistry, they don't have chemistry, and no amount of artistic scenes is going to help that. As it is, it seemed to me that Hayden was the only one even trying to do the romance scenes. Natalie seemed to come off as not giving a damn. The whole romance is forced -- and well it has to be because it has to be there for L&L to exist, not like with Han & Leia (that was a fun romance born of chemistry from the actors). I always wondered if Anakin/Padme would have turned out better had Keira Knightley been Padme instead. Oh well. Doesn't really matter. In my mind Padme is almost a moot point. Her real purpose becomes apparent in RotS -- a baby incubator never to be mentioned again. Sad.

    Better intimacy.

I heartily disagree with that last point. In Padme, even at the point of death, resides the hope and conviction that there is still good in Anakin. This belief is born again within Luke and brought to fruition at the climax of the Saga. During her lifetime, Padme resisted the TF, resisted Palpatine's attempts to manipulate her, resisted the creation of the army, and helped to form the Rebellion in its early stages (see ROTS deleted scenes). She was far from some mere "baby incubator".

^I'm sorry that's just how *I* see her at the end of the day. I used to see her like you do before RotS. Not so much anymore. I wish the Rebellion scenes could have been left in, I might have more respect for her character. At the very least I wish she would have died because Anakin caused her injury that could not have been repaired. I try to look at her death from a symbolic POV and still falls a little flat for me, especially with two newborns right in front of her. Oh well, I'm off-topic now.:)

It seems the romance in AOTC was not well received anyway. Personally i thought the chemistry was fine. Of course, GL wasn't going to go too far with the intimate stuff anyway.
I just wish some lighter scenes could have been in AOTC. It was a little too murky/dark. They should have jumped into the romance quicker, and then said "wait, we can't".

It is a sad fact that her role in ROTS was to suck face with the bad guy, die of wangst in childbirth, have horribly cheesy dialogue and cry on cue. If they had left in the Rebellion scenes...yeah. Oh, and she delivers one-liners to die for.

Yeah well as GL said, when he got to episode III he had the same problem as the first movie: too much stuff for one movie. He cut everything that wasn't Anakin-centered. I don't like putting in deleted scenes if they don't work, but for ROTS it would be interesting to see an expanded version.
AS for Padme, i kind of like her Senate scene they left out of AOTC. There's some drama to it, and she's pleading witht the senate not to create an army.

It's funny, the most natural Anakin/Padme scene IMO is in the deleted scenes on Naboo with her family, and in her room when she's talking to him. I did like those scenes and felt that they gave us more insight into her character.

It's too bad that GL felt he had to cut the movie time down. I would have been fine with RotS being 4 hours.;) And the deleted scenes would have shown Padme doing something besides moon over Anakin. Just because she was pregnant doesn't mean she had to sit around all day, which is what she did in RotS until Mustafar in which she put herself and her unborn children in danger.

I honestly think GL was afraid that people would walk out early, as they reportedly did in some instances for Return of the King.

Also, at 140 minutes ROTS is commensurate in length with the other films in the saga.

I would have liked maybe just the first "Alliance" scene. It provides enough ground work.
I also like the deleted scene in AOTC where they go to Padme's house. Wish it was in the movie instead of the Queen Jamilla scene.

I haven't seen any of the deleted scenes from SW, but when I read the novel for AOTC, I though that that part was a very good part of the story, and added quite a bit of spice to it. Now that I find it's in there, I'm gonna search youtube!!!

So I guess no one really thinks that Padme & Anakin should've made out eh? Oh well....

You can't have Padme killed off that way because that would've caused a miscarriage which will also kill both Luke and Leia in the process. George can't let that happen knowing that he has to preserve the OT continuity so ergo, we wind up with the "losing the will to live" segment.

Also the main problem lies directly in the way the story was written. The abhorrent writing led to characters without chemistry and without believability in the romance. It was all too contrived and too poorly written for romance, no matter how intimate, to be pulled off.

I agree. They should have kissed more in ROTS. And talked less.

The concept art showed Anakin throw her against a wall. She wasn't dead yet, AFAIC. That way she could still have the babies, but then later die because of injuries. That would have been better than, "I'm going to die because of my man, even though I have TWO newborns that need me."

More Intimacy? I think a good thing to remember here is that intimacy sometimes is used in the wrong context. There are two types of intimacy, physical, and emotional.

Generally, I think the emotional intimacy between Mr and Mrs Skywalker is alive and well. However, the physical intimacy isn't as... flamboyant, as we're used to in films. Remember, GL is an action director. I'm kinda glad that there were no sex scenes in any of the SW movies, because if the direction, "Faster and more intense," had been used, we would have something FAR more involved than the wrestling scene in the 300!:p

Anakin and Padmé's romance we must remember is a courtly romance, a traditional romance, almost as chaste as no kissing before proposal. GL had always intended it to be a little awkward and innocent, and we get that on screen I think.

In ROTS, true enough, their relationship would have matured and graduated. But again... behind blast doors. Even though the scene in which Anakin learns that he is going to be a father is packed full of intimacy, it is not the type of intimacy that we're all so used to. Or maybe it's just hormonal teenagers who want to put themselves in Padmé's position?:p=P~

I like the romance between Anakin and Padme and i think we dont need "intimate scenes" to create a beautiful love story. However, I was really let down with ROTS, the movie itself is great but after AOTC, the love story between Anakin and Padme just seemed to vanish, actually Padme was the one that seemed to vanish, there was nothing there and i loved her character. I do wish they could have shown Padme doing something else besides seating and waiting around for Anakin. Her character is so active in TPM and AOTC when it comes to politics and the rights of people and then in ROTS when they need her the most, you dont see her do anything at all.

I also agree that in AOTC the deleted scenes of Anakin and Padme visiting her home and her bedroom with the pictures of her were really good and showed a connection between the two.
