"Vader nearly died for that blunder." Deliberatly, she looked over at Luke's hand. "That was where he lost his right hand in fact."

    Souce: Dark Force Rising

We see Anakin loose his right hand(flesh) in AOTC. Maybe someone has an explanation for this.

Even metals can be clipped off by a lightsaber, as proven countless times in lightsaber duels across the galaxy. With the evidence we have from Ep. II (thanks for giving us the evidence, btw), we know that Vader has a mechanical limb in his right arm socket.

The only answer I can think up, from this information, is that Palpatine forcibly removed Vader's mechanical right hand, which would be pain in and of itself through a few sources of anguish. First, he has the feeling of a lightsaber triggering the pain servers in the electronic parts, thus letting him feel physical pain. Second, he was used to using that hand. He's already fully accustomed to it, so removing it gets rid of something he's used to using. Third, that's his lightsaber side, if I remember correctly, so he'll have to learn that all over again. Fourth, he needs to get used to yet another hand all over again. Poor Darth Vader... that's just a bad day for a Sith Lord.

Don't you think that the context with her looking over at Luke's hand suggests that she ment his actual right arm. And why not say "again" even if the above explanation is true.

Let me explain something to you, MER,

    Lucas...Is...Stupid.

I dont think he's ever read anything about SW, other than critic reviews and scripts. He doesnt care that he's screwed up SW Fact. He consideres the EU to be an AU.

    The Phantom's two cents...

Mara never knew Vader was Anakin Skywalker. So why would she know that at one point, Anakin Skywalker lost his arm?

The way I see it Mara never knew Vader's arm was mechanical. We don't get the impression that she saw Vader lose his hand so it's possible she just heard Palpatine cut his hand off.

This way AOTC has not messed up Mara's statement.

*goes back to haunting the JC*

Jacen: Incorrect. Lucas doesn't consider the EU to be an AU ;)

And let's not get into a canon war about an offtopic thing. :)

My thoughts are that Palpy took off that arm specifically as a psycological reminder of his failures. Really, if he does it the right way, it's a great way to keep Vader in line.
