At Anakin and Padme's wedding at the end of AOTC, we see Anakin's new arm. An arm which is quite obviously robotic. Now, in TESB, we see Luke get a prosthetic hand that looks just like a human one. So, at the end of AOTC, is Anakin's robotic arm just a loaner, with a better arm on order? Will Anakin appear to have two regular arms in ROTS?

That gold metal arm shows the lack of technology that the Republic posses. By the time of the Empire, they have much better technology, which is why Luke has such a realistic looking hand.

Assuming the new arm was attached aboard one of the Acclamator warships while en route from Geonosis to Coruscant, the machine arm reflected the clonetrooper/approaching-Imperial ascthetic: functionality and efficiency over appearance. Clonetroopers wearing those robot arms wouldn't give a damn if they had synthflesh on them or not (since the white armor would be covering the limbs anyway). Hence the arm is a sign of the emotionless and cold times to come.

By Luke's time, the Rebel Alliance was much more sensitive to the needs of traumatized battle-weary organic soldiers, hence the synthflesh and enhanced touch-sensory capabilities.

Thanks for the answers. I agree with the efficiency-over-looks idea.

It's also a symbolic image by George Lucas - when Anakin loses his hand, his new one is obviously mechanical, and probably lacks feeling - he's losing his humanity, piece by piece, and has taken the first step toward this in AotC. On the other hand, Luke has a very realistic hand that does have feeling - he's trying to rebuild himself and retain his humanity.

    warning: cynical post ahead

One possibility could be that when Lucas made ESB he didn't have the technology to make a cool CG hand so they only had one prop shot showing us that his new hand was mechanical. Maybe he'll superimpose a CG hand over Luke's real hand when he releases the super-special-extended-edition DVDs after everyone buys the special editions.

    (sorry, its early.)

I disagree. I see no evidence of a technological prgression from TPM to ANH. Diffrent stuff is built, but there are no actual advancements. 3P0 has a more "human" looking hand, so the tech exists. Heck, Anakin could build a better hand that the one he has.

I think it shows the backward abilities of Naboo in the prothstetic department. Anakin and his giant metal hand, Tycho and his missing eye, etc.

I see a huge technological progression from TPM to ANH-Naboo starfighters/X-wings, TF battleships/DSI, leather armored security rent-a-cops to full-body armored stormtroopers, etc.

That being said, I'd say the arm was attached on an Acclamator-the clones certainly wouldn't care if an arm was metallic.

    That's a very good point!

    I now stand corrected.

According to The New Essential Guide to Weapons & Technology, which hit the store shelves today, Anakin waited until he was back at the Jedi Temple and then designed and built his new arm himself before rushing off to Naboo with Padme. Synthflesh and sensory pads were possible, but he deliberately chose not to use them (except for electrostatic fingertips that told him when he was holding something). The servos in the hand, btw, made it possible for him to twist and tear steel with his new hand -- something most droids couldn't do.

"I don't know that Anakin ever missed his real arm. To him, the new one seemed so much better, so much more powerful..." -- Siri Tachi, Jedi Knight

That's very interesting to know. In the pics from EPIII he has a normal synth hand though, like Luke's.
I wonder if there is going to be any back story about the arm in the film. It surely got my attention.

In the pics I've seen, he wears a black glove over the prosthetic. No synthflesh as far as I can see.

I LOVE that idea - that it was a conscious decision by Anakin. Brilliant. :)

And yeah, Anakin has the same mechanical hand in RotS, I'm almost sure of it. Most of the time he wears a black glove, but in the production shots I've seen of the scenes where he doesn't wear the glove, Hayden had a blue forearm-glove on - the arm and hand will be put in with CGI.

Yup, my mistake! It was from -the making of Rots- in the OT DVD release but I must have been just a rehearsal. I'll need to check it out again.

    Possible Spoiler.

In ROTS, Anakin wears a really neat looking black glove. It's an awesome glove, IMO.
