I was among many people who were wondering why Anakin didn't have a life-like hand like Luke did. Well I was looking at my "Guide to the Star Wars Universe: Third Edition" and it explains it (even though the book is a few years older than AOTC):

    ___________________________________________________
Prosthetic Replacement - After the Clone Wars, medical science, made great advancements in the field of prosthetic replacements. By the time of the Galactic Civil War, doctors could replace lost limbs and organs with effective and lifelike prosthetic parts.
    ___________________________________________________

Now it should make sense to everyone.

Something else to bear in mind...perhaps the advances in prosthetic limb replacement were necessitated by the warfare brought on by the rise of the Empire...

Good point. They needed the technology more after all those deaths.

This might be something Adam puts on his Chopped Off Hands of Star Wars page.

He got a metal hand to try and curb his habit of self abuse.

Right. War is actually good for medicine. For example, most of the technology we have today in plastic surgery came about from the Second World War and the Korean War.

Anakin's hand is essentially the same as Luke's, absent the synth-flesh. :)

Anakin's metalic gold hand was there for two reasons: it's true that technology had not advanced to the point where he could have gotten a synthetic hand as "real" as Luke's. But Lucas also mentions that it is full of symbolism--this is the first piece of the artificial body of Darth Vader. Anakin is starting to become "more machine, now, than man."

What I wonder about his whether or not he will have skin in Ep. III. I would think it would be near impossible to have the hand be metal still. It would have to be CG and that would probably look weird.

I didn't think a whole lot about it. Just that technology does advance, even in Star Wars.

It helps to explain the line "He's more machine now than man" from ROTJ.

I was never bothered by it to begin with.
Some people get hooks. Some people get manaquin-like arms, some people (like my neighbor) choose to go without. But I suppose if people desperately needed an explaination, they have it now...

I always assumed that it was because he had his hand replaced on Naboo, and Naboo is way behind in prostetics technology.
Anakin has an ugly metal hand, the security chief is missing an eye, etc.

Maybe Anakin purposefully chose the mechanical hand that he has as a way of trying to remind himself of his failures as a Jedi.

I think a lot of people couldn't take AOTC seriously from the moment they saw Captain Typho's eyepatch.

I'm pretty sure I read a spoiler somewhere that said Anakin has the same hand in Episode III as he does in Episode II.

Anakin's only a padawan (and a former slave). Maybe he can't afford the top of the line fancied up real lookin' ones. Those things don't come cheap. Amidala will have to get him an upgraded replacement for their anniversary.

    Exactly.

Anakin's hand is meant to make more of a symbolic statement than a physical one.
