I hate how all of a sudden Anakin has long hair...as soon as he becomes a night. I mean why didnt they have a gradual progession instead of this crap. Thats one of my beefs with the clone wars. Things suddenly change with no explanation...kinda like the trooper armer. I mean there are several months before episode 3..enough time for hair to grow.

    You're forgetting something:

The last time Anakin is seen visually, prior to Jedi Trial?

    "No Man's Land." Republic #62. Month 16.75.

Set some thirteen months-and-change prior to Trial. Month 30.

It still tracks. (Although I seem to recall the Insider's "Changing Seasons" illustrations depicting Skywalker's still-short coif as of Month 24, so take that one as you will.)

How much time has Anakin had for personal grooming during the war? For that matter, what are the chances that having been fighting in the field so much he's just decided to ignore the idea of Padawans (at least the males) keeping their hair short except for a single braid?

^Ayuh. Anakin's been away from the Temple for most of the war, hasn't he?

Things must be slow around here if this is a topic.

Who cares? He has nice hair. Let him grow it if he wants. It looks better than Obi-wan's comb over thingie.

Nah, in the painting of Anakin in the Tim Zahn duology, his hair is much longer than it is in Republic # 67...but not as long as it is on the cover of Jedi Trial.

It's a legit concern, Tiershon. ;) That's not the only instance buzz-cut hair has germinated with such rapidity in a few months' period.

But it's another galaxy, another tech. Accelerated growth is applicable.

but padawans are not allowed to grow their hair out like that.

Let me get this straight: The Jedi are in the middle of the biggest war for a thousand years, they are stretched thin as it is...and you are wondering why they aren't enforcing haircuts?

that is correct quentin....its all about apperances. jk

I ask this because.....it is kinda a big deal from a character evolution standpoint. Its the mark of him being a jedi Knight. I think he should have been promoted earlier on in the war. I mean...look at all he did early on....the freaking dark reaper was quite an accomplishment

I think he should have been promoted earlier on in the war.

I think they probably had a good reason for this.

As Obi-Wan says in the cartoon "It is not your skill which is in question, but your maturity".

Apperances count for diddly on the front lines during a war except to the officers who are so by the book that they can't even use the head without getting orders to do so from the commanding officer. This is not to say that they don't want to be and feel clean, but rather that they don't always have the time for the kind of attention to hygine that they would have if not on the front line.

I was recently reading something on one of Mort Kunstler's Civil War paintings (the painting is entitled The Glorious Fourth and is about Grant entering Vicksburg after it's capture). Kunstler talks about the research he did for the painting and one of the things he points out is that in the painting there are men in their shirtsleeves when the order of the day was full dress uniform. A line he mentions from the war concerning this was that of Civil War soldiers "He always obeyed a reasonable order, not because it was an order, but because it was reasonable." Mississippi in the middle of summer certainly isn't some place one would want to wear those heavy, dark blue wool uniforms, so full dress uniform on that day wouldn't have been a reasonable order. And I'd be willing to bet that while one the front lines Anakin and other Padawans would not be so worried about hair length being a distinction between Padawan and Knight being a reasonable order.

You should be more worried why everyone is so hologenic in comics. I'm waiting to see one ugly or nonattractive female without sparkling looks.

And a fat Jedi! Yes, a fat overweight woman, but not to the extent of a George Martin character. Or maybe a midget (is that ok to say here? Well, Yareal "Poof" means something else at my end!) or Munchkin, like Zao. Something "characteristic" about a character, the way Vos has a native American look with deadlocks.

Actually, there's a seriously lack of dark skin characters. There's no other way to say it. More Calrissian-class characters and Diaths needed. And they need a side kick, like a wolf or canine equivalent. If Tom Baker can have K9, so can we.

That's certainly true. Much as I love Star Wars, there tends to be a certain amount of, oh...ethnic disparity in the ranks. :p Though I don't think it's any direct racism in either the canon or EU, unless it's on the personal level of the authors/artists, but just something that's overlooked.

Anakin's hair growth doesn't bother me much. The kid's been at war for awhile, so I doubt he's had time for much grooming. (I don't know about any of you, but my hair grows fast. Really fast. I can trim off four or five inches and have most it grow back before the end of the year.) It doesn't surprise me so much to think Anakin's would grow out more, though I agree that the length seems to fluctuate alot.

Personally, I was more surprised that it seemed so well-behaved in the comics. All of the ROTS leaked images have Anakin's hair looking borderline overgrown, with a hint of a wildness to it, which really fits his character. That Padawan cut, messy as it was, couldn't have looked particularly nice growing out. In fact, it would have looked flat-out bad. :p

"well..yeah but correct me if im wrong...but padawans are not allowed to grow their hair out like that"

Padawans aren't really supposed to wear black tunics and robes. Padawans are certainly supposed to avoid wreaking bloody vengeance on a camp-full of Tusken Raiders. Anakin doesn't care for the rules.

Still, if the Jedi don't have time for personal grooming in the war, why is Anakin still clean-shaven in every story?

Anakin is using the Dark Side of the Force to keep facial hair from appearing so he can make the point to his wife.

Padme: What happened to your hair?
    Anakin: At least I shaved.

    >>kinda like the trooper armer<<

There actually is a gradual progression for that- it's introduced around month 24 of the war, and the older style armor is still in use 30 months ABG, until most if not all forces are using it by 36 months ABG.

    >>You should be more worried why everyone is so hologenic in comics.<<

and you should be worried that you remembered to replace "photo" with "holo" ;) [:D]

...His "Iron Jedi Chef" period was evidently quite the time for him.

(Waiting for some poor LFL soul to license out Chris Farley's likeness for a Jedi storyline. "Next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser and your daughter's knocked up -- I seen it a hundred times.")

He was also fat and Asian in appearance. In Star Wars terms, that makes him as rare as can be...

I think it's rather strange that the EU has a lack of racial diversity... I mean, even the original trilolgy did an ok job of showing people of different races, particularly in Mos Eisely and Cloud City. The prequels have done an even better job. Why is it that the novels and comics fall so far behind?

In Republic, all the women Jedi look the same. I can't thell them apart. Well, save the aliens.

In the Battle of Jabiim, there are 3 or 4 female Jedi who all look the same for me, and one of them gets killed by Gillmunn, I thought it was either Leska or Aubrie, but both of them are alive later on and I never coul tell them apart.

Does anyone else think the Galactic Empire is racists AMONG humans. I mean, their were African and Asiatic looking people in the Alliance in ROTJ, but the Imps were all Anglo males. I can only think of one non-Caucasian Imperial, that beefy SpecOps Stormtrooper in the X-wing comics.

Maybe the late CW era Republic was somewhat racist too?
