Here is my tutorial on the fastest and easiest way to rotoscope lightsabers in after effects.
It takes some from both Ryan and Dorkmans tuts with a few changes.

I like this method for what you said it's for: quick rotoing. However, the only thing I don't like about it is that you don't have much control over the consistency of continuity over how the blade was EXACTLY! Course, as someone stated in the other tutorial thread, it'd be good for background stuff, and things that need to be done fast.

I dont understand, all you have to do is change your brush size and or shape.

A few hours ago I watched illbeats' tut, and I thought to myself: "Waaaait a sec... Haven't I seen this somewhere before?"
I did't have to think, because I knew right away: "Yes! I saw it on Michael Frisks website a few months ago!"

Btw, Michael, well done music video! [face_dancing]Wake me up, before you go-go[face_dancing]

Well like I said I took from this tut and combined with Master Ryans teachings to do my tut.

Greetings illbeats, I tried your method, and I agree it's pretty quick, but it has some downsides IMO (especially for close ups). Perhaps it's due to my default pencil shapes, but when the part of the hilt has no round shape, it's hard to get a nice "squared" shape down there, except if you use the 1 pixel tool, which makes the rotoscoping process a bit (just a bit) longer.

The other problem I found is that the source footage has to be as long as the comp you're using (or at least in my trials), because if not, when you paste the blade layer it appears missaligned.

Anyway, I think I agree this is the fastest way of rotoscoping. If you're in a rush it's pretty usefull, because you can do more than 20 seconds in an hour (that's what I achieved, at 24fps, but it was not "perfect"), it's pretty easy as well, I liked it. Thanks for puting up the tutorial :)

Ture ,but if you just start from a little higher on the hilts end ,you wont notice its rounded when you add your blur layers.
You would have to REALLY zoom in to see,and the reqular viewer of the movie will not see that..
Here is some footage using this method

I honestly don`t think anyone whould know I didn`t use the pen tool for that clip unless I told them..

Im working of some tweeks to make this method better and faster..
I wish there was a way to fill in the fanning saber with one click, that would rock.

Here are some saber ignitions I did using this method (no keyframing) except got the lens flares
Im still working on a way to do lens flares with no keyframing.

Indeed, the footage you posted looks pretty good. Anyway, I'll keep practising on this method, because it is quick and since I don't have as much free time as I'd like, it's the best way to rotoscope my short projects without going mad (because I needed a lot of time before for pretty short videos).

About the ignitions you posted look pretty good, although the glows are too weak on them in my opinion. Anyway, post the ignitions' tutorial, I'd like to have a look at them (to see if what I've figured out on how to do it is going the right way, hehe)

Yes I agree, the background made the glows not show up so good on the red and yellow saber ignition gifs.
I used Ryans adjust ment layer method though.

When I use Ryan's AL method with sabers against whitey backgrounds I usually add some shadows to increase a bit the power of the glow, something like 20 or so,a nd the results aren't that bad, kinda look like a mix between Ryan's sabers and ILM's.

Just wanted to say that I like the method, hehe, especially for shots with many sabers on it.
