AOTC, Anakin's Padawan Braid.

I took some time to study Anakin's braid a little closer recently, just for details sake and couldn't help but notice that the end is tied with blue, followed imediately by red, then blue again an inch or two along. I remember in the TPM extra features GL discusses the Jedi hairstyle with Ewan while his hair is being shaved, GL says that each knot signifies an important point or period in a Padawan's life, one to remember and take note of. Does this red tie signify Oui-gon's death?

The theory I've heard is the first blue is his life before he falls, the red is his fall, and the blue is his redemption. It wouldn't be why Obi-Wan or Anakin did it, but I think it's plausible.

 

It sounds likes a plausible explanation. As far as I know, Lucas' comment on TPM DVD is the only reference to the significance of the colored threads.

 

To me, that would mean that they were symbolically mourning someone who had transformed into the Force.

Blue = blue light saber = Anakin

Red = red light saber = Vader

Blue = Anakin returns

 

So I suppose it could also be a foreshadowing? After the second blue tie, the braid continues on, perhaps hinting that he still continues on after death?
