I hate to admit it, as someone who despises Apple's closed tech ecosystem and bull*** like removing headphone jacks from phones and "8 GB of RAM on a Mac is just like 16 GB on PC!" But the money they've dumped into their side hustle seems to have done its work. I think only FX on Hulu (Disney+ outside of the States) comes close in terms of originals. Netflix has all but abandoned prestige for slop. It seems like all Amazon does now is hyperviolent superheroes. HBO/Max has been thoroughly Zaslav'd, though the thing with Colin Ferrell playing Tony Soprano was pretty good. Paramount+... is there. No one else has sci-fi like they do right now. I really like For All Mankind (despite latter series stumbles), Severence, Dark Matter, and I'm working my way through Silo and Rebecca Ferguson's intense stares. I know the average show nowadays has a total of five people watching it, so maybe I'm alone in this assessment.
What about Foundation? Do we forget Gaal so quickly? Also, really what competition is out there? Star Wars: Helmet Wars? Sour Ron? This is really a one-eyed man scenario.
I’ve liked all the ones mentioned except Dark Matter. I’m four episodes in and struggling to enjoy it. So far it seems like wasted potential and a smattering of dumb things. For All Mankind seems to have a pattern of good season - not good season. The spin-off, if it’s still happening, could be great if they can pull it off, although that perspective already seems quite well mined.
I watched 1.5 episosed of For All Mankind. It bored me to tears. Now started watching Foundation and I'm much happier.
For All Mankind and Dark Matter have slow starts, but I think they both pick up quite a bit. Spoiler FAM when the US space program accelerates, several disasters and near-disasters, women astronauts early, the timeline diverging more outside of the space program, etc. Dark Matter when he starts hopping realities, and the last couple episodes of the first season get crazier by showing just how extreme the consequences are.
i'm seven episodes in to the first season of severance, which is the first apple tv show that i've watched. and yeah, it's pretty amazing so far.
Severance is VERY good. I dont have apple tv at the moment but I'm looking forward to season 2 when I do.
I would say that so far season 2 is better than season 1. I was worried by the behind-the-scenes drama, but that doesn't seem to be reflected onscreen.
I haven’t watched Apple TV much, but it does seem to be leading in quality originals. And Foundation just looked so beautiful, and I actually like some of the changes/elaboration (Demerzel and the Dynasty are a highlight for me).
Apple got me with Ted Lasso and really got me with Shrinking, Foundation and For All Mankind. I really need to resubscribe and do some rewatches and continue other stuff.
I'm a huge fan of that Tetris movie I've watched it like 3 times. When I had a free appletv for 3 months only show I watched was Monarch Legacy of Monsters but it had Godzilla in it!
The average level of quality of the shows on Apple TV+ is easily the highest of any streaming service. There's probably not enough content to necessitate a perpetual subscription, but then again, no streaming service actually has enough quality content to justify a perpetual subscription, and yet most people default to "but I already hav Nertflix" seemingly unaware that you can actually cancel any time and rotate what service you use month to month.
Slow Horses hasn't been mentioned yet (!?), but it's a consistently fantastic show that I'd heartily recommend. I'm all caught up, and I want more. Fortunately, I think we're getting season 5 sometime this year
Come From Away FYI is a professionally shot stage play of the original Broadway cast of the musical. It's about the town of Gander, Newfoundland harboring 7000 people who landed there on 9/11/2001 when planes were diverted and what happened over the next 5 days. I got to see the touring production last summer and the filmed version on Apple right after.. highly recommended.
I grew up in eastern Canada and spent a week in Gander in 2004. They nailed it. That's exactly what those people are like and how they talk. Beautiful story too.
Oh did they finally put AppleTV Plus on Android after Mac device locking? That was the worst for me that held me back because accessing it from a non Apple device is a pain. Let's see if I can access my library "But you won’t be able to rent or buy movies and TV shows from the Android app." Freaking boo there's some stuff like Star Trek Prodigy s2 that's only on AppleTV Yep I can only access direct AppleTV Plus content, which I could do from the web browser, and nothing from iTunes library purchases boo
After seeing the show I was very surprised to watch a documentary about the real story and find that so many of the characters in the play are real people.
Mythic Quest is certainly Rob McElhenney’s second best (fictional) show, but it’s still well worth checking out.
