With the release of the Arc-170 on FFG's X-Wing Table top game, got me curious about lore wise, how well would the Arc-170 hold up in the Age of the Rebellion. Between the larger blasters on either side on the wings, with the addition of the two rear mounted turrets and apparently it has Proton Torpedo launchers as well, Is the X-Wing really the great fighter it is made out to be compared to the Arc-170?

I just keep thinking to that Death Star Trench Run if the rebellion were using them for it, would it have made a difference, according to Wookiepedia both ships have a atmospheric speed 1,050 km/h, which leads me to belive at least for the Death Star Trench Runs it would have played a better roll as the "Trench Runner" then the x-wing or even the Y-wings with its rear gun.

In the X-Wing Novel, Starfighters of Adumar, I think it is Wedge who mentions putting a shield generator and hyperdrive on the Blade 32s and it would make a good bomber, if according to the Wookiepedia, with the same speed of a x-wing, the Arc-170 has pretty much a similar load-out as the Blades, but faster, sure they prob cant take a hit as well, as the blades were built similar to the slow Y-wings, but then with the increased speed would that really matter? I mean the only thing I can say about the x-wing over the Arc-170 is the fact that it requires less people to crew, which if it gets destroyed can create less of a personal issue and is a smaller ship to show up on targeting systems

If anyone has any a more in-depth view on this by all means.

If we go by Legens, the X-Wing has superior acceleration to the ARC-170 (3700 Gs compared to 2600 Gs). It is also smaller and should therefore be more nimble and manouverable than the ARC-170 (features, that were negated with the DS-trench-run). On the other side the ARC-170 was expected to survive among hordes of droid-fighters, so it got very strong shields (didn't prevent them from being shot down by Tri-Droids in ROTS). It also has more powerful guns to fight against capital ships.

Comparing them however makes little sense, since they were designed for different roles. The X-Wings main purpose is to fight other starfighters and work in concert with capital ships during fleet-battles. The ARC-170 is a vessel supposed to go on long patrols behind enemy-lines, scout and destroy targets of opportunity and act as provisional fighter-bomber while the PTB-625 and NTP-630 were more specialized dedicated bombers.

Well, im just going by how often the X-Wing is called in to do multi role missions VS using using a more specialized craft. Sure, X-Wings were "nimble" and were built for anti fighter primary, but the fact is, A-Wings are more specialized for anti fighter engagements, and Y-Wings, B-Wings were the heavy assault craft, which leaves the X-Wing as a multi role ship logically.. They are always brought in more often then not to take down capital ships VS Y-Wings it seems, and they can hold there own against fighters that they shouldn't really be able to touch, like the Tie Interceptor, which is constantly praised for being able to fly circles around a x-wing, yet they x-wings always seem to out fly them. So Obviously its a pilot thing, not a ship, so if say, Wedge Antilies, as pilot, Wes Janson as a rear gunner, and Hobby as gunner in a Arc-170, would they perform the same level if not higher degree of success against the empire.

An advantage on the ARC-170....in the trench run you would have had tail gunners to keep TIEs off their backs.
