Well, yeah, remember when Qui Gon and Obi Wan swam to Oto Gunga? I probably spelled that wrong. Oh well.

    An equal chance?

Well they seem to be waterproof in a sense. In the Phantom Menace, originally Obi-Wan's saber was to short out when he landed on Naboo because he forgot to turn off the power when he went underwater. It is fine as long as it's turned off. As for rain, it had an effect on Obi-Wan's saber, giving it a laboured buzz during the battle.

If you take an activated lightsaber and shove it underwater it will short out, no doubt. If it's raining, it will "fizzle" on the blade, but rain isn't enough water to turn the blade off. Think of fire, if you put a burning candle underwater, it will definately go out. If the candle is in the rain, it won't go out unless it's really pouring bucketloads. A drop of rain won't extinguish it.

Obi-Wan's original saber that he lost on Naboo was not waterproof, however the one he made to replace it was.

Also, in the EU, the saber that Luke made in ROTJ was waterproof, because he used it underwater in Vision of the Future.

no. they aren't. in one jedi apprentice (not sure which) book, when obi and qui-gon try to save tahl, obi's saber touches the water and it shorts out.

The fact that they cut the "swamp fried my weapon" scene from TPM suggests to me that they're more water-resistant than one might think.

That's true about in TPM, but don't forget AOTC, hmmm does snow count because in ESB, Luke's lightsaber was compacted in snow.

I'm going to get a little technical.

A lightsaber blade is essentially an electrical current carefully controlled to go a certain distance, then return, creating the blade. Water conducts elecricity. Therefore, if an actiated lightsaber blade touches water, the current is no longer controlled, and it shorts out.

Rain isn't grounded to anything, so it does not conduct the current, therefore rain does not short them out.

I guess the answer to the question depends on a few things. If the blade is off, then it is waterproof, I believe. If it is on, it is not. I don't believe Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan would not have risked their lightsabers being ruined in the swim to Otah Gunga.

    I agree ^

They should be waterproof as long as they're turned off. Of course, they wouldn't STORE one underwater, but a short soak probably wouldn't hurt it.

I agree that lightsabers are not waterproof. However in Jediknight, kyle uses the green light saber from Jedi Ron under water to get through sewers.

In Jedi Outcast, the lightsabers turn off when engulfed in water.

So there's even inconsistencies in the same game series.

There's inconsistencies everywhere: you just need to know where to look.

For example. That wall over there...

Anyway, when the rain hit Obi-wan's saber, the water was superheated into steam. That's what made the funny noise.

here's a good analagey in the real world ..

you can wash your computer's main board in water and i will be fine as long as it's not powered when wet maybe light sabers are the same ?
eg if you have to fight a jedi or sith use a fire hose not a blaster !!!!

"Supposedly. They are not 'water proof'.More like 'water resistant'.They can handle rain, but not an ocean full of water. They short out."

Each lightsaber is made differently, so that in itself can easily explain why some sabers short out underwater and some don't.

Yeah. In AOTC, Obi-Wan has it on Kamino and it always rains there.

I guess not, since Kyle Katarn's saber goes out, when he goes underwater. However, I do think it's possible for a Jedi to create a waterproof sabre.

    More EU-
In Splinter of the Mind's Eye set between ANH and ESB, Luke sticks his deactivated lightsaber underwater and activates it without a problem. (This would be his original, blue lightsaber)

Since lightsabers themselves are technically impossible to construct, I don't think that the inconsistencies about their waterproofness matter.... :p

Don't bother, you can run but you can't hide. Lightsabers are not impossible to construct. If you can think of something, you can do it. Just focus.
