Is it really, as the catchphrase states, "Australian for Beer"?

And how close is the American version to the real thing? (the stuff we get here is brewed through a partnership with Miller)

One would think that since wines are imported from all over the world, beer would be no problem, eh?

Fosters lie. They speak English in Australia. They just add "mate" to the end of every sentence. Kind of like Canadians with "eh".

I like beer and I want to move to Australia. Does this mean I automatically like Fosters's?

I've tried the version sold here in UK pubs and I found it too 'gassy'. I'd rather have Stella Artois if I'm drinking lager. However a US friend of mine always drinks the Fosters when he is over for a visit.

Fosters is only drank by those who are not Australian but have the desire to be seen as such. We are rather parochial about our beer and what you drink depends on where you live.

    When in doubt, ask Wikipedia

While popular in many countries, particularly where it is brewed locally, Foster's Lager does not enjoy widespread success in Australia. As a bottled beer produced by the Foster's Group (formerly the Carlton United Beverages group (CUB)) it is rarely promoted in Australia. Once a "premium" brand, Foster's Lager has been bypassed in favour of the Foster's Group's favoured premium brands of Carlton Crown Lager and Stella Artois.

Australians are both parochial and provincial about their beers; few beers are popular Australia-wide.

I don't see any Australians drinking Foster's. If you go to different places, they drink different beer.

New South Wales: Tooheys, Reschs and KB Lager
    Queensland: XXXX and Powers
South Australia: West End, Southwark and Coopers
Tasmania: Boags in the north, Cascade in the south
Victoria: Carlton Draught, Victoria Bitter and Melbourne Bitter
Western Australia: Swan and Emu (beer)

Well I was born in Australia and lived the first 5 years of my life there, so I guess I can answer this question.

    It tastes like pee pee.

One gets used to the craziness after a while, but some of the friends are best kept at a distance. Frankie never gave me a second glance, though.

EDIT: Oh, wait, other Foster's. I really should read the thread first.

    Quite definitely this.

And as others have said, there's not really any beer that's a favourite Australia-wide, though state-wide would be common. For instance, while its popular in Victoria, most South Australians think VB (Victorian Bitter) tastes like ****. :p

Question for the eastern staters; whats the general concensus of Tooheys Extra Dry over in Qld/NSW/Vic?

I'm not a fan, but a lot of Aussies I know say it's better here (UK) than in Aus. I quite like Tooheys, but overall I think the great gift the Aussies have given to the world of drink is the stubby holder. No more cold fingers, no more warm beer. Genius.

    Also agreed.

Fosters is the garbage that is exported to other countries like Britain because beer here is expensive, and Fosters is cheap swill!

I wish I could find somewhere around here that stocks Crown Lager - or even Cascade, for that matter, being from Tassie.

I find it funny that Stella Artois is cropping up in Australia. That's what I usually drink in Britain...or as they call it here, "wife beater". And I've only ever found in one bar in America.

I miss Coopers. Although VB wasn't too bad. Westend sucked.

lol Fosters, I've never had it at home, maybe had it forced on me in London once or twice because the Young's tap ran dry.

So you keep right on enjoying that great "Australian for beer" taste, fools ;)

On the subject of beer, one of my female friends commented that Stella is a 'girly' beer. Now I've checked with a few sources who claim to the contrary, but should I protect my masculinity and ditch the beer? It sure is tasty.

I was not aware of this. Though I can see how it came about, Stella being a fairly mild style.

Corona is the girly beer here, for pretty much the same reasons but with citrus in the bottle to confirm. :p
