I hope so. Because they're both already seeded.

I'd take Ivanovic, but Sharapova's form is mesmerising. [face_thinking]

    Wow.

    Women's tennis = [face_tired]

At least, most of the time. And it doesn't matter if they're good-looking. I've gotten so pissed off at how much ESPN2 replays women's matches during the Australian Open.

I think Ivanovic has similar form and she certainly has assets beyond Sharapova's.

As a sport, I'd much rather watch men's tennis... as I tend to watch sport for the competition.

actually, outside of aesthetic appeal i much prefer the women's game. to me the men's game just hasn't been very interesting since the wooden racket days.

I find 4-5 setters too long.

EDIT: just out of curiosity, who brings in more money - the man or women? i.e. from tickets, adverts during the matches, etc.

Unless the women are bringing at least as much I don't see how they have a case for equal prize money at a Grand Slam given that they play far less tennis.

Finally some one shares my views on this. Men's matches are just more entertaining the level of play is amazing and the Men's game typically has more parity and upsets. (although lat years French and Wimbledon didn't) but the Australian has brought parity back. I hate when they show the Williams sisters, I dislike them and the announcers worship them.
And the people who watch just for their looks aren't tennis fans, and really their are only a handful of good looking women in the game so using that as a reason for women's tennis being better is pretty obsolete.

That being said I will watch the women's final because it is a final.

Sharapova just won her third grand slam. I kind of thought that would happen after she beat Henin in the quarters.

Without a doubt the men bring in more money than the women. You just have to look at the Tier 1 events in the WTA, that are meant to be the equal of ATP Masters series. The attendence levels are not even close.

The WTA wanted to get more exposure outside the Slams, whoch are run by the ITA, so they hit a deal with the ATP.

The Indian Wells and Miami Masters are now shared events, where the women get to share the stage with the best in mens tennis.

Also take a look at sponsors and advertisers, most of them either have Federer, Nadal as the face of tennis.

I saw most of the matches for the women only because it is a Slam. Apart from teh slams, I'll watch them at Indian Wells, Miami, and the year ending championships.

Truth is, women tennis is no where near as competitive as mens. I watch tennis nearly every week, and very rarely have I seen matches from the WTA that can rival the ATP week in week out.

I really like the *potential* for four of five setters. For me it makes the match a real event. Something where the power, the momentum, that can swing back and forth. Women's tennis is just too short. I think winning in two easy sets is much easier than pushing on and taking that third set.

'Straight sets' doesn't really mean anything when it's best of three, especially when there's only one one other outcome (2-1). I prefer mn's grand slam tennis because it feels like the victor has had to push through a little more to win.

I agree with your points but I just don't like watching sports that take over 2 hours unless it's extra time in a tournament.

Tennis is one of those sports that you d0n't have to watch beggining to end.

Yes, in fact, I would rather watch men's tennis, if your concern is the level of play. I absolutely hate the pace (or lack thereof) of women's matches. All they have to do is play 3 sets, and it takes them so long just to play those! It's a waste of a time slot.

Doesn't the one guy in the men's final look like Muhammad Ali?

I think he's deserved enough respect to call him by his name. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Yes he looks like Ali

lol Well when the situation arises where I actually have to address him face to face I'll keep that in mind. But for now, since we're in the Sports forum of a Star Wars messageboard, are you pulling for Ali or the other guy?
