Did the autopilot take Anakin to the Droid Control Ship in TPM? Or was it really R2-D2? After all, why would the autopilot take the N-1 fighter to an enemy ship?

    Maybe it was the force.

Neither, Anakin flew the ship in himself. If you remember, early on in the space battle R2 is able to disengage the autopilot so at this point in the battle, Anakin is in full control of the ship.

"There they are. That's where the autopilot is taking us."

You took the words right out of my mouth, MisterVader. And if it was the Force that directed the ship, then isn't it possible that R2-D2 is Force-Sensitive?

I think that R2-D2 had something to do with the eventual destination of the N-1.

In the DK 'inside the worlds of episode one' book, it explains how the Naboo officers fought and took back the hanger control room, allowing them to transmit the auto-pilot codes to all the N1-Starfighters so they would go and battle the droid control ship.

My mistake, I misread My young Padawan's question. I thought it was referring to when Anakin took the N-1 into the hangar of the Droid ship. In that case, Anakin was piloting after R2 disengaged the autopilot which had taken them to the ship originally.

I like Phantom Menace more than most people, I think. However, the Anakin piloting scene was one of the most annoying parts for me. He was way too gee-whiz the whole time, and it hurts the story that everything he did was by accident.

Let's shoot the droideka's.... maybe it's this button, or this one, hmmm aha, use the red button on the joystick. Oooops, now I'm flying away!!!

Oh no I'm shot!!! Into the hangar we go!!! Let's try this button!!! Oh whoops, shot the reactor... well my ship seems to have fixed itself, time to boogie.

It's too convenient. If had just a couple of things with skill, it would make it easier to digest.

Every choice Anakin made when it came to piloting his fighter, was made because the Force was guiding him. What he precived as just random chance, was the influence of the Force. That each button and how he flew, came from the Force. He does everything right, when other times, he wouldn't right away.
