I'm planning to get a mic for my next project and i'm looking at the Azden SGM line of mics. The film budget is like 0 dollars so i'm looking at the two cheapest options (The X1 and the X).

I was going to order the SGM-X but I just noticed that it uses a non-standard battery and that the SGM-1X is only 30 dollars more. Should I go for the 1X?

Also, I noticed that the two mics come with an Integrated Shockmount. Can this fit into any standard shoe? (I have an old Sony PC110). Also, do these come off?(Like if I wanted to put the mic on a mic stand)

Also, can anybody who owns a mic give me some general information on Mics? (Cords, things not to do on set, boom poles, tips).

First off, the major difference between the SGM-1X and the SGM-X is that the 1X uses XLR to plug into the camera/DAT, and the SGM-X uses your typical microphone jack. I'm willing to bet your camera doesn't take XLR input, and you should make sure it has a microphone jack on it before you buy any mic.

As for shock mounts, they are simply a little device that uses crossed rubber bands to hold your mic. This way you don't get much noise when you move the mic around. You can easily remove the mic from the shock mount and put it in your normal shoe.

And for boom poles, you don't need much. Heck, I've been known to duct tape my mic to the end of a broom stick on more than one occasion.

    Hope that helps!

If you use a broom stick as a boomstick, I recommend getting an aluminum one. It'll be less heavy and easier to hold for long periods of time.

I have the 1X and it works great with both my home-grade ZR25 as well as the GL2.
The shock mount works fine on any standard accessory shoe, but smaller cameras (like the ZR25) have an issue with the mic size, in that it actually comes into view when the lens is zoomed out:

This is not an issue for most pro-sumer cameras like the GL2:

Both cameras have a stereo mini-plug mic jack. I just used the second diagram on this page to make my own adapter wire. Works great with both cameras.

    Have fun.

Well there ya go! I have the 2X, and it only uses XLR. Of course, you can get an XLR to mini jack adapter...
