Thanks, Hollywood, for, as always, being a crusader against stereotypes. Yeah, bad teachers are hilarious. They should make another movie about bad vets who kick puppies. Or bad police who shoot bystanders. Or bad doctors who let their patients die. Hysterical! Thankfully, we teachers take our jobs more seriously than Hollywood does. /end rant

Now, obviously, I'm pre-judging here a little bit since the movie is not out yet, and all I've seen are the ads. I hope that I'm wrong about this movie, but I doubt I will be.

Also, Jason Segal, I am very, very disappointed in you.

This movie is unrealistic, in that none of the woman teachers I ever had in junior high looked like Cameron Diaz.

I also noticed that fat kid from Nickelodeon's iCarly is in this. I'm sure he'll be going places.

Oh come on. It looks like some stupid comedy movie. No need for your panties to get in a bunch.

It's true. But it's also true that there's a whole mainstream political party in the U.S. right now that consistently blames our failing education system on "bad teachers." This movie doesn't help.

Worst of all, it shows that our country thinks that professionals in education who don't take their jobs seriously is funny. Let me say that again. They think that not taking education seriously is funny. Well, ha ha ha.

So, are you going to start a protest complete with picket sings at a local theater playing this movie when it comes out?

Nah, I won't go that far. :p Really, I recognize that I'm being super uptight about this. It's just a touchy subject for me (and I'm sure a lot of teachers out there).

If it's any comfort, there not on course to be "mainstream" for more than a couple more months, at this rate.

    No, they don't.

They think teachers participating in all kinds of unrealistic absurdity in a movie is funny, not in real life.

Take it to the cry more thread.

My teacher dad conveyed to me a similar reaction to this film, but because he's in his 50's and part of my family it was much more dry sarcasm than the OP. I recall phrases like "money-grubbing teachers" and "suckling from the government teat with their pensions."

As a teacher I am actually looking forward to this movie in order to laugh at my profession.

I'd bet all the Santa's picketed theaters when Bad Santa came out.

The key take away from this is that Espy REALLY wants us to know what she does for a living.

I notice that you don't say anything about your own quality of teaching. Are you a bad teacher? Is this why you take offense to this? Should we take bad teaching more seriously?

I would love a teacher comedy where I could laugh at my profession. There's a wealth of potential for that. I've only been a teacher for 2 years, and already, oh the stories I could tell... In fact, I secretly hope this movie isn't what it appears to be, which is a movie that characterizes teachers in a completely stereotypical fashion that, quite frankly, feeds right into the teacher-bashing agenda that's out there. So far the trailers for this movie consist of "This teacher doesn't take her job seriously! Haha! This teacher hates kids! Haha!"

I mean, people were outraged when those reports came out a few months ago showing how far students in the U.S. have fallen behind their peers worldwide, but now these same people are going to spend millions of dollars to laugh at "bad teachers." It just makes me a little sick to my stomach.

I'm still new to my profession, so of course I have areas I need to work on. That being said, I do have a master's degree in education and am still currently taking graduate classes to earn more certifications, so I take my profession very seriously. :p I try to be a good teacher every day!

That was a great movie, and it upped my respect for Harvey Keitel (not that it wasn't already there) by a few miles. That scene where he's experiencing "technical difficulties" is not something a lot of actors would do.

I wanted to make a Santa comment but I see I've been beaten to the punch. I am also sure that boys felt pretty slighted a few years ago when Michael Bay had his his way with them...oh yeah, I said that.

Are you sure you're not a politician? Because you still haven't said anything about how good of a teacher you are.

I can think of two, Summer Heights High and Teachers, but both are Aussie shows. Does Welcome Back Cotter count?

You can't kick puppies in movies!

But the others have all been done. Much of the vigilante-esque (even up through the Seagal-era) police movies of the 70s and 80s had indiscriminate bystander shootings.

The movies Coma (previously a book) and Malice both cover bad doctors, as well as several other movies.

I know, but in my defense, I don't watch it anymore. If I watch Nickelodeon, it's for SpongeBob and the Penguins of Madagascar. Only those shows, I swear.
