...but all the real scars will be on the inside! (bonus points if anyone gets that ;))

    Title:
Battle Scars - although I'm telling you it's not 100% related...
    Author: ThisIsMe1138
Characters: Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, Captain Rex
    Genre: Hurt/Comfort, family
Summary: Ahsoka runs to check on Anakin after a nightmare...
Disclaimer: Umm... I think you would've heard if I bought Disney... but just to be clear... no. I didn't.
Warning: There is practically no plot. This is just our two favorite Jedi being cute.
Notes: Although this isn't the first fanfic I've written, this is the first I've posted and to be honest I'm kinda nervous... so tell me what you think :) Also, don't have a beta reader as of yet, so feel free to PM me with any typos or obvious logic holes. Note in note: This story is finished, but I will probably post in two or three 500 or so parts. 2nd note in a note: Although I'm not particularly against it, and I think it'll be kind of obvious after reading the whole thing, just mentioning that this was not written to be romantic at all. Hope you like it! :)

    Part I:

It was almost pitch-dark in the Republic Camp where the 501st legion had dropped for the night after their victory, save for the army-issue lanterns that were casting eerie dancing shadows on the sides of tents as they swayed in the wind. It was also almost dead silent as the men caught their first wink of sleep in perhaps days, save for the gasping breaths of Ahsoka Tano.

Geez, Tano, get a hold of yourself, she mentally scolded, simultaneously fighting the tears back as she lay awake, her eyes wide open and her entire body shaking. There was nothing wrong with crying, necessarily, she’d always told herself, if there was a valid reason, but nightmares? She was a Republic Commander, thank you very much, not a Crecheling.

There was nothing to be afraid of anyways, she reasoned with herself. The Republic had won, the men were safe, Anakin was finally sleeping on the other side of the tent and-- wait. Anakin. She couldn’t feel him nearby, couldn’t hear his soft snores or the sounds of him shifting in his sleep like he always did.

Tossing aside her thermal blanket, ready to run because as the fifteen-year-old commander of a Republic legion, she’d grown used to sleeping fully-dressed, clothes, boots and all. Instinctively, she snatched her lightsaber from beside her place on the ground and ignited it as she burst out of the tent.

Using her weapon as a glow rod, she scanned the area as systematically as she could manage in her near-panic state. What if he’d been captured? Wounded? Killed? She was ready to search for him, defend him, save him, beg that they take her life instead of his--

A steady hand gripped her arm and held her still. “Woah, woah, woah, Commander. You okay there?”

Ahsoka all but fell into his arms. “Rex!”

He felt her shudder against him. “Where’s Anakin?” Ah. So that would explain the tears and the shivers and the way she was practically clinging to him to stay upright. Ahsoka Tano was very possibly one of the most level-headed people - not to mention teenager - he knew, but after-battle nightmares could shake up even the toughest fighter.

“He’s over in General Kenobi’s tent. Rumor has it he had to drag his Master to his tent and force him to go to sleep. I say they’re both insane.” The familiar teasing spark in his eyes was visible even in the limited glow of the lamps. “And if I know the General, he’s still up if you wanna make a quick check.”

She had no idea what she’d done to deserve a friend like him. “Th-thanks, Rex. Goodnight.”

He smiled at her gently - he understood nightmares better than most. “Goodnight, little ‘un.” He watched her walk away until she reached General Kenobi’s tent and disappeared behind the flap, without failing to notice she’d been too upset to correct his use of nicknames.

    ---

...I promise Anakin does come into this...

    What did you think? :)

Great debut! Ahsoka's reactions and concerns are very much in character as is Rex's gentle assurance. =D=

The description of the characters' relationships was definitely good. Rex gives a good explanation for Ahsoka's tears in this moment.

    Oh!! [face_love][face_love]

Aww, there are most certainly not enough Ahsoka and Anakin fics on the boards - and when you add in Rex being such a dear to boot I am one happy reader. Of course Ahsoka is going to collect a couple of demons during the war, and she's certainly not the only one fighting nightmares - but it's the comradery and bonds between them that make persevering possible. What a beautiful debut piece, and I look forward to reading the next installment. [face_love]=D=

Big Brother Anakin and Little Sister Ahsoka are my favorite Star Wars made Family (family by choice) with Big Brother/Father Obi-Wan and Little Brother/Son Anakin are right behind them in that category.

People should care for each other that way and war does things to you and you need a support system to help you pull through.

I can't wait for more interaction between the characters! :)

Hi again, everybody! Thanks so much for the reviews!! Don't know if I am supposed to answer each one individually, but you guys are the best - I love having you as my first reviewers ever [face_love] @teamhansolo : you are a cheater and therefore prohibited from commenting. ;):p:cool:

I decided to do all the rest of it in one piece because the first one was pretty short. // = Force bond. Here you go, people :) Oh, and there is one TLJ reference... ;)

    Battle Scars - Part II

This was incredibly stupid. Here she was, Ahsoka Tano, Jedi Padawan, Republic Commander, running to her master over a nightmare - admittedly one so terrifying she still shook. “M-master?”

Anakin looked up blearily, his eyes almost closed as if he’d been half asleep. “Snips,” he yawned. “What are you doing up?”

She could lie to him. She wanted to lie to him, to spare herself the shame, but he would sense the truth anyways. “I...I had a nightmare… and I… I needed to make sure you were... okay.”

Without a word, he opened up the thermal blanket he’d wrapped around himself, motioning for her to sit beside him on the ground against a box of supplies. Once she was comfortable under the blanket, she felt Anakin heave a deep, tired sigh. She expected a scolding about control, a lecture about attachments, maybe a subtle Force suggestion mixed in with disappointment in her for seeking him out when she should’ve have gone back to sleep.

“I’m sorry I’m never there for you, Snips.”

Okay, she didn’t remember that one being on the list of things to expect. “What do you mean? You’re always there - you practically keep me on a leash.” He hadn't told her his origins, she’d had to guess at his past, there was no way for her to know how much that wording had hurt him.

“That’s… that’s what I mean. When I was your age and had a nightmare, Obi-Wan came to me. When I was sick, he took care of me. He let me rant for hours about whatever I needed to, talk out my fears, ask questions about growing up, have heart-to-heart discussions--”

Already feeling safer in her master’s arms, Ahsoka couldn’t help but remark, “Um, Master, if you don't consider this heart-to heart, I don’t think I want to find out.”

He chuckled, still sounding tired and like he wasn’t done with the whole somber mood. “What I’m trying to say, Snips, is - look at your life. I’ve missed so much. For your achievements, you get a medal, when you deserve a hug and dinner and Dex’s. When you’re sick, you get a break from the constant smell of smoke and the sound of explosions, instead of holovids and hot chocolate.

“Times change,” she tried to interject, but it was as if he didn’t hear. She was pretty sure there were tears in his eyes.

“I know you feel like I hold you back, treat you like a kid. And I do, I’m sorry. But it’s not because I don’t believe in you all the way, it’s because I’m scared. I can’t lose you, ‘Soka. You’re like my little sister.”

There were no words to describe how that made her feel, or enough to measure how grateful she was that Anakin was at her side, so she snuggled closer to him, confirming through their bond that she understood, that she felt the same way.

“I really mean it, Snips. I’m not a good enough master for you. In fact, I’m a horrible master.”

“Amazing,” his Padawan murmured sleepily. “Every word in that sentence - was wrong.” She knew he was crying, but in Anakin’s eyes, pointing it out would be the same as proving his worthlessness, and she wasn’t about to let him take one more breath believing such a lie.

“First of all, Master, you are the best master I could ever ask for. You are the first person who ever understood me, are still the only person I feel comfortable talking with - really talking. No, you can’t train me the way you were trained, but you are not Obi-Wan and I am not you, and you are doing the best you can, which is good enough for me. You don’t owe me anything - except for your life a couple times over, but I think you’ve saved mine enough that we’re even. And yes, in a lot of ways, you’re like my brother, too--”

He cut her off in a half-teasing tone. “I love you, Snips.”

“Even if I might have had a tiny bit of a crush on you at the beginning,” she finished.

Anakin almost yelped playfully, but thought better of it, amazed that Obi-Wan had slept through all their previous racket. (Before remember the force of the sleep suggestion he’d used. No pun intended.) “I take that back. I don’t love you. And I am relieved beyond words that you don’t feel… that way… about me anymore!”

“Me too. But you are kinda cute, though.”

Anakin grimaced, like any normal person would when they weren’t satisfied with their reflection. “I’ve noticed. Too many females seem to agree.”

It was way too irresistible. “Including one, very beautiful senator?” she asked, as innocently as she could with the involuntary smirk spreading across her face.

Anakin used the Force to snatch a pillow off the ground and throw it at her face. “I hate you.”

“What?! I thought you just said you loved me?”

“I took it back, remember? Besides, that’s just lack of sleep, making my emotions run wild.”

She scoffed. “Master, your emotions always run wild - I could probably feel you from twelve parsecs away.”

Anakin didn’t protest - it wasn’t like he had any argument to that. He shifted, attempting to find a more comfortable position. “G’night, Snips.”

Ahsoka leaned her head on her master’s shoulder. “Goodnight, Skyguy. I love you, too.”

Anakin hummed sleepily in acknowledgement, his thoughts barely coherent. //Hey, Snips? Don’t tell Obi-Wan about the Padme thing...// He pleaded through their bond.

Ahsoka smiled at the message, the unique form of communication entirely too rare between them.

//Of course not, Master. What else are sisters for?//

    -- The End --

    How was it? :)

Perfect blend of snark/teasing & warm, gentle tenderness.
The fact that you did it primarily through dialogue is especially yummy. =D=

Yup, Big Brother Anakin and Little Sister Ahsoka; sweet as ever and acting like real life siblings.

I love how Anakin is upset he isn’t a better Master to Ahsoka because of the War and he has his own demons to work through and Ahsoka does her best to assure him that it’s okay and that he’s different than Obi-Wan and she’s different from him.

    So sweet!! [face_love]

Nicely done on both chapters, thisisme1138! I love the Rex's quip in chapter 1 and the playful exchange between Anakin and Ahsoka in chapter 2. Ahsoka's insecurities is perfectly in character of the time, and as surprising as Anakin's emotionality is, the brother-sister bond comes through loud and clear. Well done.

Oh, this is so sweet! [face_love] These two make a truly adorable big bro and little sis pair. Ahsoka’s inner conflict here is so in character—she really wants to stand strong on Her Own Two Feet and not be fazed by a silly dream because she wants to be a Strong Jedi and Republic Commander. But at the same time, she’s a teenager—a scared teenager who’s experiencing very natural fears and doubts, and who feels the need to run for comfort to someone she looks up to. And when she does so, Anakin opens up to her, too, reflecting on his role as her teacher, the difference between her apprenticeship and his own, and on the ways he could do better by her, and that’s where the real heart-to-heart is. You’ve achieved a really nice blend of compassion, mutual encouragement, and lighthearted snark in their conversation here; I too smiled at the bit about her early crush (wow, awk-ward! :p ) and at the “very beautiful senator” remark; Ani can trust his “li’l sis” to keep that mum, methinks. ;) And of course it is always a treat to see Rex offering his own support and care. <3 Very nice work here, full of tenderness and heart, and thanks so much for sharing it with us! =D=

Oh, this was such a lovely conclusion to your story! [face_love] I adore the strength of Anakin and Ahsoka's bond in this. She really is so young to be growing up on a battlefield - and so of course Anakin wants to step in and protect her and offer her some sort of normalcy, all the while Ahsoka wants to be stronger than she should have to be in order to feel she deserves the weight of the commission that's been placed on her shoulders. But their real strength comes from each other - their bond, as brother/sister and master/apprentice gives each of them an anchor and a boon to depend on in this tumultuous part of their lives. [face_love]

And I loved the 'beautiful senator' line. Oh Anakin, you really are hopeless. But, it's okay. Ahsoka has your back. ;) [face_love]
