My vote goes to Xenogears for PS1, without a doubt. Has anyone ever played an RPG with a more complex and beautifully woven tale?

FF7 was fairly well done, but the storyline was overrated. Thats the closest I've seen.

The Baldurs Gate series. Coming to grips with your godhood was pretty cool. It was a fresh take from all of the "Save the world" stories that keep getting belted out. From which Square seems to be the biggest offender. Woops I forgot Square dosen't count since they don't make RPG's, just turn based adventure games. [face_devil]

Are those both PC games? If so, I wont be able to comment, as I am not a PC gamer.

Yes, Square does overuse the save the world motif, however, with Xenogears there was so much more to it, considering you lost at the end of the game, with millions of people dying at the hand of "god", and the beginning of an ice age that would kill off most everyone. That game was so sinister...I just loved the idea of "god" creating us to make himself stronger, and that people would be willing to sacrifice themselves for a being that created them for its own gain.

I think FFVII is the best. But it could just be the whole atmosphere.

    Skies of Arcadia.

    Unique, original, refreshing.

    All RPG's gave cliches.

The thing is to offer it in a unique and original way.

But all RPG's have cliches. Some more than others.

There is saying according to Socrates. There are only 3 basic stories in this world. The question is, how you choose to tell them.

I would have to say FFVII has the best rpg storyline followed closely by FF3/6.

If anyone wants to go over to the JCC and the official final fantasy thread going on there, there's a post by Darth_Ramza that contains a lengthy editorial on the entire storyline on ffvii that gives much information that I missed when I played and cleared some things up. I recommend you take the trip over there, tiz worth it.

I'm just curious, I know I keep mentioning it, but everybody who mentions FF games, I assume you are Square fans. If so, have you played the Square title Xenogears? It's rare now, came out shortly after FFVII I believe and imo the story is SOO much better. Anyone agree or disagree?

I thought the story to FF7 was very very cliched and weak. Too much so.

    Cool game, but overrated.

FF3 had a great story, even if it was cliched. In fact, FF3 is the RPG that uses the most RPG and video game cliches EVER. This magazine did a cliche comparison between RPG's.

FF3 came out with every single cliche check bob marked.

But like I said before, it presented it in a unqiue and refreshing way, thus making it very enjoyable.

FF7 was definetly a good story, I don't know that it's the best story. As everyone pointed out, it was the same story as all the rest but with new people. It's the equivilent to Carrie and Carrie 2: the rage. Same plot, better graphics/cinematography and hotter girls.

Best storytelling: Dragon Warrior 4- for it's successful attempt to merge 4 stories into one.

Best storyline: Daggerfall if you can follow it. (takes 10x the reading of Morrowind) It wasn't told well, but the story is Shakesperian. Dead kings, vengenant ghosts, warring nations and you're thrown into the mix to figure out everything.

    Worst bugs: Daggerfall

Best old school: Pool of Radiance

    Most emersive: Morrowind

    Best overall game: Morrowind

Yeah, I've got a copy of Xenogears. One of the few decent turn based adventure games that they made for the PSX. I loved the story up untill the end where everyone started mutating and the world went into the big freeze. Thats when the game went super flakey and I couldn't stand to play it anymore. Other then that it was great a game for it's time.

    Rabid Balding Ewok!!!

Im surprised. You are one of the first people who i've talked to who has given Xenogears a serious chance and wasnt into it the whole way through. I thought the story was so engrossing, I couldnt stop playing until it was over...not to mention that it was so complex, you have to play through it twice to get most of it, I know i did. :D 140 hours well spent...

Dragon Warrior 4 was good until the 5th act when everyone met. You could only control ONE character which was utter crap with the other 3 doing their own thing, it was horrid.

It has to be either fallout1/2 or Planescape Torment. I think they beat Baldurs Gate into the ground....amazing.

Did any of you like Chrono Cross's story? I've never played Chrono Trigger, But regarding Chrono Cross, I never even finished the game. The story felt very cliched, even by RPG standards, and I felt no incentive to finish it. That usually never happens with me. Well, actually it also happened with FF8.

I'd say Terranigma, a classic and slightly forgotten SNES RPG. And not far behind that, Fallout.
