Big League Chew.

when i was a kid this stuff was sacred, particularly among kids like me and many of my friends who liked/played baseball. it was more expensive than all other gums, but it was worth the price and considered the king of gums.

Big League Chew was also considered a requisite for playing your best baseball. it wasn't necessary at all times, nor did it's absence make for a crisis when playing ball, but it was a very big part of the game. whenever we got a 'large' group of kids together to play a serious and fun ball game, Big League Chew was mandatory. it completed the game. a truly 'pure' game couldn't be played without it.

one day last summer, some friends of mine and i got together to play some softball. on the way to the field, i told the guys i was riding with that we needed to stop for some Big League Chew. the guy driving didn't want to stop and basically said 'bah'. i then said, "you don't understand. having some Big League Chew will complete the game for me." this was the first time i really thought about BLC and wanted it for softball, or at pretty much any time since i was a kid. i explained to my friends how much a part of baseball BLC was when i was a kid, and so he gave in and stopped at a gas station. one of the guys and i went into the gas station to get some of the gum (he said that he too used to chew BLC often as a kid). we couldn't find any BLC on the racks. on the way out, i sort of had a mock fit of rage (as a joke) and screamed at the cashier "HOW THE HELL CAN I PLAY BASEBALL WITHOUT BIG LEAGUE CHEW?!" my friend then pretended to hold me back and dragged me out of the gas station. when we got to the field, one of the other guys whom we met there said he was going on a smoke run, so i asked him to pick up some BLC if they had any. he returned with 4 packs of BLC. thus everyone there (about 15 people) got to have my childhood experience of chewing Big League Chew while playing the game. it was particularly special for me because it was a trip back to my childhood when my friends and i would all chew BLC while playing baseball, often times. it was just one of those surreal, undescribable experiences.

next summer i'm gonna start teaching baseball to my nephew, and you can be sure that Big League Chew will be a part of it.

Man, I use to love Big League Chew, it was so different and all string like. I use to love chewing a big wad of it too.
I don't remember that it was suppose to help you play ball better(We used M&Ms for that) but I remember being obessive about it and getting pretty upset when my parents wouldn't let me get it.

 

When I was a kid it was BLC and sunflower seeds. Always.

 

I used to suck the salt off the seeds and spit them at the opposing team. Good times.

 

I used to play first base so I would spit the seeds at the runner when he started to take his lead.

 

I used to spit at the pitcher when I was taking my lead off first.

it's true. BLC enhanced your game in baseball in much the same way that stilts enhance your game in basketball. ...or something.

 

The grape flavored one is the best. Although the damn stuff runs out of flavor every 5 seconds.

 

Big League Chew is some good stuff. yep. Some good stuff.

 

Reading all this, I just went to the gas station and bought a pack.
