Does anybody know long Darth Maul's Sabre blade Length is ? I'm thinking its 4.50 to 5 feet on either side but I don't know all and any help is appreciated -Lord Zarries Gylaark
I have a question regarding blade lenght. Are all blades the same lenght, or are they proportioned to the users body? Shaden *^_^*
If anything, his blades may have been shorter than 36" each. Usually, blades on sabers are about a meter (39") but 30" to 36" is widely acceptable. Being that Darth Maul used a double saber, using standard blades would make 6 total feet of blade, PLUS the hilt. That makes for a rather long weapon (around 7'6"). For double sabers, I'd go with no longer than 30" (keeping the overall length around 6'6"). Longer than this can be a little difficult to manage...(this coming from someone who's about 5'10" or so...) I'm not sure about the actual props, but from the images I've seen, I'd put his blades at 30" to 32"...Just a guess... --Kai
To answer Shaden's question... Blades are porportioned to the individual. Take a look at Yoda's saber (both hilt and blade length)...it would be terribly awkward for a 2' Jedi Master to have a saber blade 3' long...that's like a 6' human having a 7' blade... There's a formula for determining proper blade length for Japanese swords, but it escapes me right now...but I usually prefer a blade around 30" to 36"...usually about the length of my arm is what I prefer (which is about 35" or 36" (I think). In my Karate days, when we trained with bo (staff), we cut our staves so that they were about up to your eyes (not your full height, but close)... so I'd say, making the sword blade around the length of your arm (fingertips to armpit) would be a safe rule of thumb... --Kai
thank you! My friend made some blades that are unbreakable and they were a bit long. I wanted to make my blade out of the same material, and that sounds logical to me! Shaden *^_^*
A rule that we always used for LARPing was "whatever is comfortable and easy for you is the proper blade length" Kai-Rhann's rule of thumb for size works great for easily making a good size for you to use. I'd suggest spending two bucks on a 1" PVC 10 ft length from home depot/lowe's/etc, cut it down to an overly large length and play around with it...see how it feels. Then just slowly trim it down until you feel it's perfect for you...you'll have the total length (hilt included) that you'll want to use. For a double bladed unit I wouldn't go more then 6 inches taller than you. FYI, the formula for a katana is to grab the tsuka (grip) as high as you can against the tsuba (guardpiece) and hold the blade straight down. The very tip should be exactly 2 inches above the ground. That blade length is good for fighting in close quarters and tight maneuvering. I prefer a longer blade than that formula myself. Enjoy and let me know if I can help you any further.
My little rule for a standard saber when you hold the lightsaber with the point of the blade touching the floor the hilt should come up to at maximum the top of your sternum. Thats what I normally do and it usually works quite well. I am 5'8 and a half (I am only 14) and my light saber is , from tip of the blade to the end of the hilt, 4 feet long 3 inches. 12 inches of hilt 39 inches of blade. For a double bladed saber I would have to say 20 inches worth of hilt and two 20 inch blades but that is personal preference. It all depends on the user.
