I'm sure when the Special Edition's were released there were tons of threads on the lines and music that were added/changed, etc,....but just the other day I was watching ESB (my favorite of the current films) and it reminded me just how much I hate the SE line of something like "alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival" when the original was so much more direct and indicative of the feeling's Vader must have been feeling after the duel with Luke. I also fear that in EPIII Vader's voice will be compromised by James EJ because on those substituted lines in the SE's they are not nearly as accurate and powerful as his original lines (most notably from ESB).

All feedback is appreciated and please feel free to remind me of the lines you hate from the SE!

EV Edit: Getting rid of the markup code in the title

There's probably already a thread (or 10) on this, but yes, I agree that that line is terrible.

Bring back, "Bring my shuttle" and get rid of those shuttle sequences that ruined the pace of the Falcon/TIE chase.

I agree...they should also switch back Luke's line on Dagobah after R2 is spit out by the bog monster to "You don't taste very good!"

    I never knew " was markup-code .... ;)

I never understood why lines were changed anyway? The changes don't even really change anything, except for the words!

I was always under the impression that his shuttle was already there, on Bespin, so why bring it?

That "Alert my Star Destroyer..." and "You're lucky you got out of there" lines are the only things I didn't like about the ESB:SE. I wish they would change them, though I did read that Luke's altered line wasn't on purpose, and it came from another audio mix, but I don't know if I believe that. In any event, I hate those two moments, especially the Vader one because (as said above), it destroys the pace of the Falcon/TIE sequence.

The Vader line was newly recorded for the SE's, to incorporate the new sequences.

The "new" lines by the Stormtrooper on the Death Star, Han on Hoth, Luke on Dagobah, 3PO over the asteroid and Han on Tatooine, etc were the result of a different audio master being used to base the SE soundtrack off of than what the majority of VHS and Laserdiscs released prior to that were based on. (this alternate audio track was of higher quality and had better multi-channel sound separation, which is why it was chosen over the others).

    LOL!! Yeah, that's true. :)

The "new" lines by . . . Han on Hoth

Call me crazy, but what was Han's "new" lines on Hoth? I don't recall any.

I forget which is which, but in one version Han says "before I get the shelter up." and in another version he says "before I get the shelter built."

Hmmm. I never noticed a change in that line before. Then again, that's such a subtle change I'm not surprised I would have missed it.

I was about to direct this to the SE/Archival editions thread, but then I remembered people only discuss the archival editions there now, so maybe it's worth taking "SE changes" out of the title and just letting people start new threads about SE changes from now on.

Anyway. My understanding of why JEJ's voice sounds different in the new line is because the audio effects weren't done the same way as the original lines for some reason. Maybe the staff was rushed when working on the SEs. In any case, I don't think it's any sort of indicator of what Vader will sound like in E3.

It's been speculated that the reason Luke's line was changed is the original implied he had actually tasted Artoo. :p

Twilik, you are watching me like a hawk. :(

Vaders voice was different in that one line? I never noticed it, but now I know and knowing is half the battle!

A friend of mine actually leaned over after the new line and asked, "Was that even James Earl Jones?"

In the original ESB, the shot of Luke slicing open the access panel and tossing the grenade in was all one shot. In the SE, it's the same shot up to when he gets the panel open, then it cuts to a second shot from a slightly-different angle for when he throws the grenade in. (Or vice versa, but the SE definitely has two shots for that moment.)

I agree with the "Alert my stahdestroaya of my arrival." Sounds like the sentence is improper some how. The Vader walking to the ramp is cool though.

Why are the SEs NOT the same versions released in the Theatres? I think George may have thought I wouldnt notice. At the movies, when Vader speaks to Fett about disentigrations, IG88 is in plane view next to Fett. On my VHS I only see 88s arm moving out of the shot as he is completely not there. At the hanger in ROTJ, There is some large black machine to the right which is also not in the SE. At the movie when the troops are searching for "Look sir, droids." there is an oldfashion looking hovership floating to the left. It is absent in my tapes. The only changes are the most obvious ones. I have the goldbox, if these scenes are in some other version, Please tell me.

If you are suffering as much as I am. =)

Yes, you have the fullscreen version. Those things you mention are cut off because the widescreen (theatrical-sized) version is much wider than the width of a tv screen.

And, in fact, some scenes from the theatrical presentation of the SE's can't even be seen on the widescreen VHS tapes for some reason- the CGI trooper dismounting a Dewback can only be partially seen on the left side of the screen in mos eisley ("i don't like the looks of this"), and also, Slave 1 was much more "in frame" on it's east platform landing zone in the CGI window added to the scene of them running through the hallways just prior to the shot of they busting through the door to see Slave 1 lift off.

THIS IS WHY I HATE SE!!! GL should not have changed them at all. I like the original so much more

SE was just an attempt to make more money and show us "new film techniques" and computer stuff.

    PURIST UNITE!!!

"Twilik, you are watching me like a hawk."

That's no reason to misspell me like a SW-n00b ;)

oh, unfortunately I saw the SE in German first, where the line sounds even worse - imagine that!

You are watching a fullscreen/pan-n-scan version of the OT. If you don't know what fullscreen/pan-n-scan is, I'll tell you.

When they make a movie, they (usually) shoot it in a rectangle.

But most peoples' TVs are a square.
    ************

So, what they do, is they slice off up to 50% of the picture to make it fit on the screen.
Not liking this, I take it? Well, I agree with you. That's why the smart choice is to buy a widescreen version. The widescreen version has black portions on top and bottom on the screen in order to preserve the rectangular aspect ratio of the film, hence you see everthing that was there in the theatre! Isn't that a better choice? ;)
