So one of my Jedi in my E1 game has decided to start writing his memoirs, putting them down in his very own holocron. The problem is - I've never given any thought to the game mechanics of building one. Sure the Dork Empire Sourcebook talks about them - but not about actually putting one together.

Anyway, before I waste a bunch of brain power on devising the game mechanics to build one, I decided to ask around and see if anyone else already had something I could use - or any brilliant insight into the matter.

El Kabong, I'd suggest this site http://www.swrpg.net/advjournal/issue2/holocrons.html and a skill called holocron construction (a TECH skill). It worked for my characters.

The recent Dark Side sourcebook said that holocron construction was a lost skill, so your player might not be able to do it at all.

A lost skill after the purge.

    The DS sourcebook says

"The construction of holocrons is a lost technology, forgotten by the time Darth Bane came to power. The only existing holocrons are centuries or even millenia old. Jedi holcrons tend to be crystalline cubes, while Sith holocrons are pyramidal."

    - Page 66

Thus it looks like the technology was lost a long time before the purge.

Of course you dont have to use a Holocron After all the Holocron was what? A Interactive device? All in all. If it were me and i wanted to keep true to the books and stuff I'd use an alternate means maybe a series of vids or something or books..... Gets the job done right? Anyhow just a suggestion

I have to agree with The Revel. Since Holocron Construction is lost. The character should try an alternate method, but in Star Wars there is no such thing as being lost forever. You allow the skill Holocron Construction (TECH if WEG, or Craft WOTC), but it should not come easy. Make it the focus of a possible campaign. Think of all the lost worlds of Sith and possible lost Jedi Libraries. It could make for an interesting campaign. Where the character must overcome several obstacles, and make great sacrifices to obtain the lost knowledge. Sounds like fun to me.
