I came across a peculiar term today - a "bung knocker". Do you know what it means?

I am not particularly interested either. Look it up in the online slang dictionary, or perhaps m-w.com if its 'official' slang.

There IS a slang dictionary. Very long.

I was on the Wild Turkey web site taking the distillery tour and it has this on the 7th step - the bottling process.

    7. Bottling
The Master Distiller decides when individual barrels are ready to be bottled. The resting barrels are removed from the warehouses and rolled along tracks to the dumping room. Here, a distillery worker wields a specially designed wooden hammer called a "bung knocker" and directs a carefully aimed blow to the barrel, causing the wooden cork (or bung) to shoot out. Mature bourbon is then poured through a filtration system and into an automated bottling machine. Here Wild Turkey Bourbon reaches its finished state and is ready to be shipped from the distillery.

You learn something new every day.

Yes, I'll never forget my first winery tour. The guide is explaning how this $300 per bottle wine is aged, the type of wood used in the barrels, and all that. And he points out that the hole used to pour the wine out of the barrel is called a bunghole.

Instantly, my friends and I begin to snicker. We tried really hard to keep a straight face, but we just couldn't, and we all burst out laughing.

The guide replied, "Yeah, I get that a lot."
