So...here ya have it! An (un)official C&H discussion thread.

    This is gonna be fun.

Okey dokey, I have no idea where to begin. There are so many topics that can be discussed here, it's kinda overwhelming.

    Somebody start us off...

I love Calvin and Hobbes so much. I think it's one of the most fantastic, well-written, subtly thoughtful comic strips to ever grace the newspaper.

What did everyone think of the last comic strip?

I loved the very last C&H comic. I remember reading it, knowing it was the last one and crying. I still have the newspaper article and the comic itself...

Who can forget the immortal poem:

How many boards could the Mongols hoarde if the Mongol Hordes got bored?

That always cracks me up. :D

My favorite line: (said by the mother) "I don't care! We cannot have an anatomically correct snowman in the front yard!" [face_laugh]

"What do you think the noodle incident involved?"

I always wondered that too. I think Watterson discusses it briefly in the 10th anniversary book (doesn't really talk about it in depth), but I'd have to re-read it to be sure.

"What did everyone think of the last comic strip?"

That last one kinda bummed me out temporarily. Before I first read it, I didn't even know that it's a magical world was going to be the last book. But when I read that last strip, I realized that it was over. ):

The noodle incident was supposed to be vague. Waterson mentions the fact that nothing he could have said would have lived up to the expectations. :D

I loved the last strip. So melancholy and yet so touching. . . a beautiful coda to one of the most profound and hilarious comic strips of all time.

I loved Calvin and Hobbes for SOOOO long, and still do *!natch*. But what annoys me is seeing the Calvin cartoon peeing on Fords, or Chevys etc., it's just bad taste.

Anywho...the noodle incident. I would have to say that:
Calvin put noodles up is nose to gross out Susie Derkins(hehhehheh), they got stuck, so Calvin picks at his nose. Unable to grab at it with his fingers, he decides to use glue to snatch it. Calvin, the smart boy genious that he is, figures that normal elmers glue won't cut is, so, he goes with an industrial base adhesive, procedes to jam his finger up his nose once more and glues his finger into his nose. :D

And THEN, after going about his day, making up wild excuses for his finger up his nose, he goes about snorting, first, Susie's lunch to irritate his nose so that he can sneeze his finger loose. This doesn't work, of course, so he thinks that, with the help of Hobbes, maybe he can reach the noodle by picking at his other nostril(it is a long noodle). Picking at his nose, he realizes that he got some glue on his other finger and he now has a finger peramanently glued inside his nose.

Now this could take any number of turns. He could have gone back in time, made a clone to help him and having the clones finger up his nose, he could haave sneezed out the noodle, needed surgery to get it loose...maybe even calling Captain(?) Stupendous, hobbes paw up his nose, the stuffed animal being glued to his face, firing a ray gun at his nose and turning the noodle alive somehow...

The list just goes on and on...*sigh*, how I miss that comic strip. :)

I agree completely. I have a Calvin sticker on my truck but it is simply Calvin's triangle grin. I hate all the peeing stickers. It's so disrespectful to the comic strip.

I hate those. And I know Bill Waterson so carefully made sure not to let his characters be slapped on T-shirts and stuff for that very reason (though I admit I own one illegal t-shirt) and it disgusts me that they're defacing a truly great character by doing that. Bill Waterson must be pulling his hair out.

    Illegal t-shirt?! FOR SHAME [face_shocked]! 8-}

I almost got one of those though...anywho :D Reading his thoughts on the merchandizing of ones art, coupled with the fact that he is a comic strip artist, makes for some interesting reading. For one, you'd think that he'd be for it, him being a comic strip artist, but he doesn't. For example, he believes that doing what Garfield creator Jim Davis does is degrading of ones artistic integrity. You don't merchandize it, you reveal it in your desired medium. Secondly, not only is his work comedic, but also sometimes heartfelt and many times meaninful, insightful and inviting of alternate thinking towards life, religion and parenthood. It wasn't just comedy for comedys sake, but it had a purpose and meaning for the audience to think about.

I miss that man, Bill Watterson. I sometimes wish more of them, artists, were like him.

    Ok...

Anybody know what Bill Watterson is up to lately? I searched around on google, but it appears that recent information (after 1999) on him is quite rare. Can anyone drop any good links or provide some info?

Oh, and btw, while I was searching, I found a ray of hope for all of us C&H fans. It appears that Watterson has not ruled out re-starting Calvin and Hobbes. If I'm correct, he voiced this in a press release or something. Of course he may not be doing it anytime soon, or ever, but someday, maybe, Hobbes may be a real tiger once again.

On of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes comic panel is this one: (Sorry No Image to give you)

Calvin: "You know, I don't think math is a science. I think it's a religion."
    Hobbes: "A religion?"

Calvin: "Yeah. All these equations are like miracles. You take two numbers and when you add them, they magically become one new number! No one can say how it happens. You either believe it, or you don't."

Calvin: "This whole book is full of things that have to be accepted on faith! It's a religion."

Hobbes: "And in the public schools no less. Call a lawyer."
Calvin: "As a math atheist, I should be excused from this."

Other favorites are when Calvin fantasizes about being the private detective, Tracer Bullit.
