Camp Walt Whitman Reminiscing (or Summer Camps in General)...

... ah, the halcyon days of yore. I was young, not knowing I could make money during summers, and I went to a summer camp.

That camp was Camp Walt Whitman in New Hampshire. Why Walt Whitman? Because our directors didn't want to insult Native Americans by naming a camp an "Indian name" -- so they chose a child-molesting poet.

Good times, good times.

I climbed most of the Appalachian Trail in NH and all of the Presidential mountains. I swam miles. I danced in my underwear. I met people who are now celebrities.

What about y'all.

Summer camp experiences anyone?

 

I did a lot of camping in scouts. It was fun, when we weren't doing scout exercises.

One time it was storming and one of the scouts in our group started crying because he was so scared. Oh, that was funny considering we were all 10-11 years old.

 

I remember at camp when there was a forest fire nearby. We were on a hike at the time and didn't know that the place had been evacuated so when we got back, it was a ghost town. Luckily, one person was making sure everyone had gotten out and saw us. But he thought that we were punk kids that didn't leave when we were told to until he realized that we had been on a hike.

Then on the way out, one of the cars got doused by that slurry stuff they drop to put out the fires. The car was nice and red. Looked like it had been through heavy red mud.

The only bad part of camp for me was thr running joke of my age group's overnights -- it'd ALWAYS rain for pretty much the entire time...

I was a counselor at a camp for a couple of years. It led to ten year long torrid love affair with one of the campers.
