Watching it again for the upteen-millionth time....and honestly I didn't even realize it was rated R until a while back when I actually looked at the back of the DVD box. I mean, Dammers DOES get his head blown off, but it's actually more comical than anything.
It was Hollywood trying to destroy the movie as it was made offshore in New Zealand with a kiwi crew and director, and didn't use a US SFX company.
Beastmaster was rated PG and had TnA plus violence. The worst offender is Poltergeist. Rated PG and has a dude rip his own face off.
Spielberg being buddies with then-MPAA head Jack Valenti. At least as someone on another message board I go to put it.
Word. According to Spielberg, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was a major reason for the PG-13 rating (dude gets his heart ripped out, rated PG). Slimy!
Why is original Texas Chainsaw Massacre given an R rating? There is almost no blood and there is no sex or nudity as I recall. Sure a mad man runs about swinging a chainsaw, but there are far worse things on film.
Actually the head shot was added in post after they realized they were getting an R rating anyways, and decided at that point, ah, **** it. The reason? Because the MPAA hates newbie indie directors, even when Robert Zemeckis is vouching for them. Of course the moment he helms a major studio picture that all changes... The MPAA needs to die.
