Hey guys, this is my first post as a member of this site, and upon coming here, I've really become interested in the whole "fanfic" thing. I'm interested in writing a story, but I can't come up with any names for jedi or sith characters that don't sound dumb. Can you guys come up with some for me. I need about 10-15 jedi and just about 5 "Darth..." names to round out the cast. I'll be sure to make mention of everyone who contributed, and I truly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

The Star Wars random generator was a good one. As for Sith names, go to Thesaurus.com and type in some kind of bad-guy name, like poison.

bad, baleful, baneful, corrupt, corruptive, dangerous, deadly, deleterious, destructive, detrimental, evil, fatal, hurtful, infective, lethal, malicious, malignant, mephitic, miasmatic, morbid, mortal, nocuous, noisome, noxious, peccant, pernicious, pestiferous, pestilential, poison, septic, toxic, toxicant, toxiferous, venomous, vicious, viperous, virulent

    There's a few for you.

Also try looking up words for nasty things in foreign languages. Hebrew, Latin, Greek, German, and Russian are all wonderful sources for Sith names.

This is another good site for names. I've found most of my Sith names by playing around with aspects of the character and then looking variations up.

I wouldn't trust any Sith-name generator that wouldn't give me Darth Shnookielumps.

For Jedi names you can look at their race or birth planet or LOTR fiction

Yes, but don't Brittany and Tiffany pop up in LotR fiction? Or maybe that's just fan fiction... ;)

For Jedi names, you can also take normal names and drop a letter here or there, or change sounds. Richard is normal earth name; Ricard sounds a bit cooler, and then you can just go to Ricar, or even Ri-Car. :p

For Sith names, just crack open a Thesaurus, then butcher up a word that expresses a characteristic of what makes the Sith Lord unique compared to others.

If you notice, all the Sith names from the movies are derived from words that have something to do with character traits the villain possesses-

    Sidious = insidious
    Tyranus = tyrant
Maul = maul (okay, that one didn't change)

Vader I think is the Dutch word for 'father', so there you have it.

i would say search up words in different languages. here are a few for you

innocent: Jedi Master Akios (from Greek word Akakios)
    evil spirit: Angru (Persian)
    dark: Charna, Gethin
    redeemed: Priam, Servaas
    death: Achan, Azrael, Mirama
    destruction: Idril, Micah
    light: Luminita, Meallan, Sade, Uri

so, Master Akios, Darth Gethin, Master Servaas, Darth Mirama, Darth Achan, Darth Idril, Master Sade, Master Uri

it's always fun making up random names too

Master Gallus Kaelbrun, Master Codo Becon, Master Garad Mibea, Master Dara Arkes, Master Jarad Arca, etc etc

    i'm a machine ;)

let me know if it helped

P.S. Pop in KOTOR and press Y at the character name screen. That always works, haha

Oooh, I like Darth Septic! Sounds like he crawled right out of the tank [face_laugh]

Like Darth Manion said, most Sith names are some dirivation of a negative word... well Vader isn't exactly negative, meaning "dad", but growing up i thought him as Darth Invader, which sounds more menacing :p

I have attacked books of world mythology, especially more esoteric mythology, and that's where I got Sith names for my recent story. Also, browsing a foreign language dictionary or modifying regular words works out well.

    Darth Horran

    Darth Sous

    Darth Thraus

    Darth Kahth Kearar

    Darth Narrvam

    Darth Sairin Karruo

I like Jedi names better so here are some for you:

    Jedi Master Shilena Helran

    Jedi Knight Rella Lorlan

    Jedi Knight Alkin Nabsiri

    Jedi Master Jamna Le' Men

    Jedi Knight Eldin Starlighter

    Jedi Knight Suncica Ell

    Jedi Master Cvijeta Mibar

I can go on and on like the pink bunny.

But seriously, try one of the sites given. I usually go to the baby names webpages because they give meaning of names. That's how I came up with the name for my own character. I wanted her name to discribe who she is. Naimah=soft in Arabic, Jamari=warror in French. So her name means soft warrior which is apropriate for her character. Good luck.

You could also see about getting a copy of "The Writer's Digest Character Naming Sourcebook". That's my main source (in addition to a few baby name books). It has more than 20,000 first and last names and gives you tips on picking names for your characters. I believe Barnes and Noble carries it, but you might be able to find it in the library?

Also, it divides up the names by countries and provides the meanings. I find it particularly helpful if you want to involve different planets or races. That way you can choose one country of origin for each planet/race and all the names will have a natural connection. For my Star Wars OCs I generally try to find the more obscure names to use so they sound less familiar.

    Hope that helps!

In the meantime, welcome to the boards and good luck with your story![face_peace]

As mnay people have said, choosing words from foreign languages works excellently, as do the various tips for Sith names. As for Jedi, or simply generic SW names, I've noticed a lot of them are simply two words (in English or otherwise) smushed together, or a word with an extra letter, or just a word in general you wouldn't really think of. For instance:

Kenobi = Japanese words 'Ken' and 'Obi' stuck together.
Skywalker = Well... Obvious. 'Sky' and 'Walker'
Organa - Just slap an 'a' on the end of 'Organ'!
Bail - A common word, but not one you'd really think about...
Solo - Another common word that matches the character's personality

Others are names that are just spelled differently or exaggerated, like Miana Kenobi mentioned. For instance:

Jorus - Just... Jorus. I'm pretty sure that's a name on it's own, isn't it? Maybe spelled funny or something.
Khaleen - Looks like an exaggerated spelling of 'Colleen'

For choosing foreign words for names, I like to use Latin for Sith, an Hebrew, Arabic, or Sanskrit for Jedi.

I always thought of Organa as more like "Organic" - "ic + "a"

But yeah, that's a good way to come up with Star Wars and Jedi names, to just alter a word or already existing name. I also like to use some German names and/or words for Sith and Jedi. Japanese words have some good examples for Sith as well as Jedi.

    Examples:

Hikaru, meaning light in Japanese would be a good Jedi name, and you can alter it to Hykoru, Hikera, etc. to make it sound more Star Warsy.

Kagai and Fuzen are both Japanese words for evil and would be great Sith names with some modifications

Morder is German for killer (Sith for sure).

Heilen Sie is German for heal and would be great as a jedi first name... Heilyn-Sye (?).

Segnen Sie is German for bless.

I hope you find this helpful. =)

I also noticed that some Star Wars names besides Luke are names in real life... Leia, Han, Owen and Ben... and are not altered at all. Mara is a form of Mary. I know there are others, but I cannot think of them at this time.
