I was just watching AOTC earlier and I remembered wondering about this a while ago. Why is it that when Obi tells R4 to oppen a channel "care of the old folks home"? Is it just a screw up that didnt get edited out like the Luke Carie incident? Any insight?

i think it was just a funny way of saying the jedi council wasnt it, its probably what all the jedi who arent on the council call it. i really cant see that ewan said the wrong line and no one noticed!

It was meant to be a call sign, I think. Or a code name so people wouldn't know what he was talking about. Anyway, that's the general idea. I've heard others around these boards say a similar one was used in WWII for something or other.

But since you mentioned it, what on Earth is the "Luke/Carrie incident?"

    Luke/Carrie Incident:
After the Death Star blows up in A New Hope, Luke is seen jumping out of his X-Wing to greet his fellow rebels. It's said that when he jumps out of his ship he yelled "Carrie!" instead of "Leia!". One of those little easter eggs from the OT.

As a clarification- it's been confirmed that he did NOT say "Carrie!". It's an audio illusion some people have misinterpretated.

Since all the dialogue from that scene had to be redubbed in post-production- so not only would Mark have had to have made the mistake in a recording booth without Carrie Fisher even being there, but the multiple sound recording engineers would have had to have missed it also, not to mention Ben upon making the final audio mix.

Thanks for the clarification. But, The2ndQuest what did Luke actually say then, cause I must've watched that scene a hundred times through and it clearly sounds like he says Carrie?

It just sounds like he's saying "Hey!" to me!

Maybe it was code for Mace. See, Yoda's been getting kind of senile lately, so Obi-Wan and Mace are thinking of putting Yoda in a home...

    :D

    >>But, The2ndQuest what did Luke actually say then<<

Luke by himself only says "HEY!", but there are other misc cheering and wooing in the background that mixes in with that.

Also, I believe Leia shouts "Luke!" before Luke says "Hey!", so some of the confusion may have resulted from kearing the "ke" part of Leia's line immediately preceeding Luke's "Hey!".

I can't figure out why so many people ask this question. I knew instantly that Obi-Wan was talking in code in that scene, so why can't others understand it?

I agree with Bib. It was pretty obvious that he was talking about the temple.

holy crap. i've been wondering this for years. i always heard him say "care of the old folks home." but i never asked anyone aobut cause i thought they think me crazy. so i figured it was really "perferably on photo" or "carry it on photo".
so he DOES say "care of the old folks home?" well yeah i always figured it meant direct link to the head council. cause they're all old. and its funny. and it's probably just slang the younger knights use.

Obi-wan was being light-hearted. Can't people see that?

He wasn't being light-hearted! It's code for the Jedi Temple.

Yeh guys, I don't even think it's really code. It wasn't like he needed to encrypt what he was telling his droid to do. I think it was a cool thing to just throw in there to emphasize that, while Obi-Wan is forced to be a task-master when Anakin's around, he's still a yound Jedi and isn't really so stuffy.

Just to clear up the Carrie nonsense:
According to Mark Hamill, he excitedly yells "Hey! There she is!" indicating that Luke was scanning the rushing crowd for Leia. In the excitement, Luke doesn't stop to enunciate each syllable like a certain golden protocol droid would do. "I ended up swallowing the 'is' part," says Hamill. So the end result was garbled to the point that some people believe it sounds an awful lot like "Carrie!" So much so that even those closely involved in the production can hear that if they listen to it enough times.

HA! I always thought that I was imagining that he said "care of the old folks home!" I thought it was hilarious and so out of the blue that it couldn't possibly be!

I am so happy that there is at last an old folks home in Star Wars. It was the only thing missing. Finally, beautiful completion. How I love life.

Simple: Obi's going for the 'superspy' thing by using the sexy code phrases and sweet ride. What the audience didn't see was him puting the moves on Taun We. (it was cut for time and content) ;)

Move over, Mr. Bond. Here comes Kenobi, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Don't you people read the novels?

"When the call beamed into the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, using scramble code 5 and in care of 'the old folk's home,' Mace Windu and Yoda knew that it was important. Extremely important."

It's fairly obvious from this passage that the term is a code word for reports that contain important and/or sensitive information.
