After playing the game Knights of the old Republic and reading 5 of the 7 TOTJ comics, "but not Freedon Nadd uprising or redemption"; I have found many descrpincies (sp?) in the Cathar species as they are protrayed in the game and the TOTJ comic series; the ones in the comics are basically your standard anthro feline with breasts thrown on; the one in the game is vastly different in many ways. The body outline seems to be your normal human physique (sp?) with a tan/olive skin color, cat like yellow eyes/pupils and what may be short whiskers.

Why did the graphic desingers do this? They referenced many other events from the TOTJ timeline and used Jedi battle meditation as a plotline but they completely changed the species design to something completely different from the TOTJ Cathar species, every ohther species I saw in KOTOR is up to spec in term of how they are supposed to look; except for Cathars.

I can think of several reasons for this:

1: They don't give a damn, but from what we have seen with other species in that game, that is not true.

2: Since there is a plot twist with a romntic relationship between the Cathar and character they may have wanted a new more pleasing human design so that it may not possibly offend some peoples tastes; a humanoid alien would be more acceptable in a romantic relationship than an anthromorpic cat with breasts.

I think I probably hit the hammer on the head with number 2 but I will leave it up to you to see what you think. I was thinking about going to the EU and KOTOR thread but scrolling through 60-70 or so pages is not my idea of a good time, I also tryed looking through the search feature but could not find anything.

Yes, but not just with you, I think carth is another one of the characters along with the infamous bastilla relationship which was not meant as a lesbian thing because I think that Juhani was originally suppossed to be male in the game.

Well, there are different breeds of cats, so perhaps there are different breeds of Cathar. Of course another possibility is that the Cathar are able to crossbreed with humans and Juhani is the result of such a crossbreeding.

Starwars is not star trek, they do not have that stupid crossbreeding ability like alot of star trek aliens. Except for a few cases in the EU it is very rare to hear anything about crossbreeding. They are too different in genetics. Besides from Shug Ninx and and a few things from the rpg sourcebooks it seems to be an extremely rare occurence.

And even those crossbreeds are the result of two different human species breeding with one another, not two aliens.

However, I believe that some DE source states specifically that Shug Ninx's mother was a humanoid alien. Rystall, from the RotJ Special Edition is apparently a hybrid of a human and the same type of alien.

Remember, Star Wars isn't hard science fiction. It's more along the lines of science fantasy or space opera. Therefore, as we've seen several examples of "half-something-or-another" in traditional fantasy, there's really nothing that prevents "half-some-type-of-alien species" in Star Wars, as long as the parents are relatively physiologically similar.

To get things back on topic, as has been pointed out, there's no reason to believe there couldn't be multiple appearances to the Cathar species. Climate may play a part in shaping how certain Cathar look. Cathar from warm regions could be sleek and have relatively little fur, while Cathar from colder regions may be hefty with a thick coat of fur.

Truth be told, I'd recommend that you check out Redemption as well. Not only because it's one helluva story, but also because I found that Sylvar's appearance had changed immensively in that one, when you compare her with the earlier comics. She went from her lion-appearance to a more cat-like look. I think that Juhani's appearance was based more off the Redemption Cathar than the earlier Cathar incarnations.

Why was Binks so smooth skinned? The designers said digitalising fur is too hard on a computer.

So to with KOTOR. Juhani is not really smooth skinned---remove her clothes and you'll see the fur, but it's flat. You'll notice all character clothing very flat on their bodies, that's just how it is. The best the game could do was have a lock of hair moving, or a neck collar flap a bit.

Incidentally, Juhani has a very furry visage in her KOTOR site picture. No different to Silvar who, further incidentally, too looked a bit different post-The Sith War to Redemption.

A bit different? It took me halfway through the Redemption TPB to realise that this was THE Sylvar, and not just some random new Jedi who had lost something in the Sith Wars.

Yeah, I ordered from Borders yesterday the Reedmption TPB; but it will take about two weeks to get there' all I need to find now is the Freedon Nadd Uprising; which I hear is pretty hard to find and may collection will be complete.

I would say that Redemption's is the most... interesting. [face_batting]

I say they picked an concept close to the Redemption version because Redemption shows us the Cathar homeworld and some of its customs. Also, the TotJ Sylvar was probably a bit too furry for the game mechanics to handle.

Or they decided to base Juhani on a Sphinx cat: mostly furless and kinda ugly. You have to admit, she could have looked better. ;)

Maybe it's just me, but, I don't think Juhani looks bad. Granted, she's no Bastila or Mission Vao, but still... :)

Its not that she looks bad, its that she doesn't look as good as she could. I think that Sylvar looks a lot better that Juhani... [face_mischief]

Or maybe its that I don't have a top of the line graphics card. :p

Any more cat-girl fetishists in here, and we'll have to start spreading kitty litter around the forum.

Rest assured, Leto II, that my taste in the KotOR women favors Bastila, Mira, and/or Mission Vao more than Juhani...
