Don't know if any of you know this...

Chancellor Valorum's full name is "Finis Valorum"

In Latin, finis, -is is a noun meaning the end, or finish

The word valorum is the genetive case (case of possesion) of the word valum

This word means valor or honesty In the genetive it means of valor

So, Chancellor Valorum's names means the end of valor. Fitting that he was the Republic's final Supremem Chancellor of any kind of moral standing before Palpatine took over.

    Fun, huh?

Just wanted to share that with you guys. P.S. - anyone know what happened to theforce.net seems like the server is down.

Valorum, or something like it, was (like Mace Windu) a name Lucas came up with for a rought draft in the OT but never got around to using.

Lucas puts a lot of secret meaning in his names like Sideous and Vader and such

Actually, since Lucas himself only named him "Valorum," and the Finis part was added by the EU, it's not really as meaningful as you suggest. And yes, Latin names have been done tons of times before in the EU.

Are you suggesting that Finis was just a coincidence? That's way too unlikely for my taste.

Well the Finis is quite obvious. I'm not sure about Valorum though...

It's striking to me, (knowing Latin very well) that the word valor was in the genetive case which always refers to possesion. The -orum ending also means it is a 2nd declension noun in the genetive plural... hmm... why cwould it be in the plural though? I don't know. Probably because Finis Vali (the genetive singular of valum) sounded dumb.

No he wouldn't as Tyranus is Greek. ;)

The Latin equivalent of tyranus is rex. Oedipus Tyranus - Oedipus Rex

But Finis is EU? I didn't know that but Valorum goes back to the Starkiller script.

Tyranus is Latinized Greek. And there is a difference between tyranus (the overthrower of a city-state's government) and rex (king), just that to the Romans it was the closest thing they had for comparison.

Wasn't Valorum based on Clinton? Terrence Stamp said that was his inspiration, I believe.

Terrence Stamp did say he used Clinton as his inspiration, when the character was described to him as a good man and a good leader dragged down by political opportunists engineering scandals to defame him.

Valorum, of course, was then followed by Palpatine, who made a great show of being a simple, humble man out to reform the government until he took advantage of a controversial war to reveal his iron fist.

Make of all this what you will... [face_whistling]

But obviously the insipration only went so far, since Valorum was supposed to be a man of honor... [face_whistling]

Wow. Um, way to keep the jocular nature of the thread.

No lies were told. The past is regrettable, agreed. But all involved will admit that redemption and change are possible. In fact, it's kind of intergal to the Star Wars saga.

And somehow, I doubt we're talking about Palpatine or Valorum any more.

Speaking of the original thread point- is it possible that Valorum was just a randomly created (or perhaps randomly stolen; Just the other day, I was reading about the Apostle Paul on his way from Tyrannus; and the week before, King Saul and the Witch of Endor...;) ) by GL, and some extremely clever EU writer knew his languages and decided to give the name a new, far deeper meaning? Do we know who it is that came up with the 'Finis?'

I had the impression that 'finis' was always his first name. *shrug*

Ah well, just looked at my TPM script. He's just 'valorum' there.

Valorum based on Clinton? Well that good work given the dirty way the Republicans smeared him, but that's another story.

George got the last laugh though with the Star Wars missle scheme with Reagan.

    Gunray = Reagan

Honourable? He went a little rabid in Dead Ends. Might be the plastic surgery that came with his new face, a more squashed-vertical.
