Character heights

I've noticed than in the EGtC, the heights listed for characters like Luke, Han and Leia are different from the actual heights of the actors. Is the metric system slightly different in GFFA, did someone involved in the book get lazy, or were the characters' heights changed for some other reason? Also, do you follow what the Guide says, or the actual heights of the actors?

 

I dunno... height differs in zero-G, and from planet to planet. What's the standard, do you think?

 

You know, I'd never thought about it. Perhaps the actors heights don't matter as the characters they play may actually be taller or shorter then they are. I just don't know.

 

I'd probably go with the books.

 

Could you please tell me what exactly the difference is? I'm curious as to how far off these heights supposedly are. I always thought they went by the actors heights, but obviously I could be wrong.

 

Off the top of my head, I think they have both Han and Leia 2 inches shorter than Ford and Fisher. I forget the Luke difference. It's not huge, but it's definitely not right...

 

Not to mention which, what about discrepancies in the EU itself? For example, in the EG, Lando is 1.77 meters tall, while on TOS Databank, he's 1.78. Not a big difference, to be sure, but definitely a difference worth noting...

It could be that they never actually measured them and they're just going off guesses based upon George Lucas's memory (there's a scary thought!) and their size compared to other objects in the movie.
In that case, 2 inches would be amazingly accurate.
Also, I would go w/ the heights in the books since star wars is fiction, and the actors heights come from that annoying "real world" and might interfere w/ your enjoyment of fiction (lol)

 

Mastadge, Lando's height change could simply be the size of the 'fro on any given day.

First off, characters from the OT could possibly shrink by the time of the NJO. That can happen with aging. And second, people are often about a half inch taller in the morning than they are in the evening. (Really, try it sometime!) This is because the space between your vertebrae (sp?) expands while you sleep, but decreases during the day.

i can't convert metric to um.....the other one very well. on average, how much height difference is there from the actors?

 

wait a minute....... carrie had lifts added onto her shoes, that you can sometimes see. is the inaccuracy taller or shorter than her normal height?

Let's see... Mastage said about 2 inches, there are 2.54 cm in an inch, so about 5.08 cm. Hope that's helpful.

 

What about big contradictions?

Cloak of Deception says that Vergere's Yaddle's height, which would have her 2 feet tall. Star by Star says she's about waist height (on a Vong or a human), which would have her closer to 3 feet. Essential guide to aliens says 1.3 meters, which is significantly more than either of those figures?

Personally, I go with 2 feet. Even though it's fiction, I'll take the primary source over the resource. And out of the two novels, one is a solid assessment, while in SbS it's an observation made by someone quite a distance away from Vergere.

 

Any thoughts? Agreements? Disagreements?

 

Well, in old westerns the buildings doors were often times made smaller to make an actor look taller.

Or in some movies doors were made larger to make a female character look deminutive, and younger.

Or really large doors to make someone look like they were entering a giant's castle.


So there real life measurements aren't really valid, it's one of those willing suspension of disbelief things.

Ok I was commenting on a earlier post up above, for movie character type things.

But I just read your vergere comments and I'll comment.

well, eg to aliens was covering the species not vergere.

But NJO scale, 2 ft "could" be someone's waist height, so it's not necessarily wrong.

I'd say 2 ft is about right.

Though let's say vergere has been in zero G for most of her life, then her height would have expanded somewhat. As well maybe she went through some kind of vong rather painful stretch therapy, . maybe at some point she really is 4 ft, then she went through a crush therapy and became another height as well.

so maybe vergere is small for a fosh, most fosh are 1.3 meters, but she is smaller.

 

Or, the EG is an average for all adults. Maybe males tend to be 6 feet or something like that, while females are much smaller. Or maybe Fosh have a really long life span -- as a juvenile in CoD she was 2 feet, and she'll eventually grow over the next 50 yrs or so to 4 feet something...

Also, just in case anyone's interested, the average height of humans in GFFA is 1.7 meters.
