    So here's a question:

I've noticed that even though there are human/non-human pairings, there aren't any offspring from those union (correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't seem to recall any). To me, that makes sense. A half-Bothan, half-human child is hard to imagine.

But what about the Chiss? Literature on the Chiss does not indicate that Chiss even engage in relationships with outsiders, but then in FH1, Jag Fel started talking about how his life would have been easier if he had ended up a Chiss woman.

Does that mean that there could be viable offspring from a Chiss/human match? I mean, what are the differences between Chiss and humans besides blue skin (which might be an environmental thing) and red eyes? Is this color difference enough to account for genetic codes that aren't compatible?

It's pretty uncertain. Chiss are descended from ancient human stock, so a match is at least theoretically possible; however, differences in body chemistry (their skin and eye color is apparently the result of an unusual reaction to oxygen) and metabolism (Chis mature incredibly quickly by human standards) would lead me to believe that, if it's possible, it might require some of that famous Chiss genetic know-how to accomplish it.

Twi'leks are blue and have colorfull eyes too. [face_dancing]
(I remember there was a human/twi'lek pair in Tales o the Bounty Hunters; IG's story )

Um, yes, I beliave Chiss could mate.

It's uncertain. Humans and Bothans can't mate naturally, but it's entirely possible that Chiss and humans can and do (Jag's thoughts suggest as much); but even if they can't, advanced genetic tinkering in SW can allow the production of genetic-chimaera species from totally "incompatible" rootstocks - the ancient Sith crossbred with the human Jedi, the Yuuzhan Vong, and the half-Gammorean, half-monkey-lizard "twins" in the Jedi Knight computer game are all examples of this...

Given that humans and Chiss are descended from the same ancestry, genetic tinkering should be far easier than in some of these instances...

It could help account for those Chiss with pupils in their eyes and non-black hair colors...

Hey, maybe "Patches" from the X-wing novels was a Chiss half-breed.

There's also Rystall, who was half human and half alien.

All Chiss are clones/descendents from clones. Therefore the rapid maturing. Therefore two Stents. Therefore Thrawn a grand admiral. Therefore Formbi.

Never gave a thought to that.
Always assumed: if they look like humans -> no problems.
I hope ther's no canon against it.
Otherwise my OC might get a hard awakening, realizing she doesn't exist. *lol*

There should be no problems with Chiss and Human breeding. Chiss diverged from stock humans recently enough that they should be easily compatible, much like a dog is with a wolf. I'm not conviced that Chiss and humans are even different species; it seems that, genetically, it's most likely that Chiss are simply a human subspecies. Even if they are diverged enough to constitute a new species then they're certainly in the same genus and hence should be perfectly capable of producing viable offspring.

So you're saying Jag is a bit gender confused? Perhaps this explains why he and Jaina aren't together in TJK.

Sorry, couldn't help it. I'm sure you meant 'ended up WITH a Chiss woman'

Lots of things are genetically possible. Most of the time if two speices aren't compatible, conception won't occur, or the resulting zygote will be mis-carried. Sometimes you get sterile off-spring like donkeys.

Who knows? Genetic similarities about between humans and many of the star wars aliens.

Ooops [face_blush] I did mean With a Chiss woman...

I appreciate all the replies! It's great to here what other people have to think - it helps me direct my own thoughts on this matter.

If there were children, do you think the Chiss chacteristics would be dominant? It's interesting to imagine children from such a union - like if a blond human with blue eyes married a Chiss...

Blue eyes AND skin? Now, that's creepy...

As species go, there is a degree of variation - fur color, skin color, eye color, etc. What are ways that the Chiss express alleles, besides height, that would be possible? Or is it more likely they not been a species (or subspecies) long enough to have a significant amount of genetic variations to account for different colorings.

Another possibility: their biochemichal reaction to oxygen, I think it is, simply causes all physical variations to disappear?

Well, we have other blue-skinned near-Humans, Wroonans (IIRC.) They can have normal hair and eyes, I believe.

At least one Chiss has been seen with non-black hair. There was a young Chiss Dark Side Adept in the Invasion of Theed Adventure game who had brown hair and pupils in his eyes.

Not to mention Ferroans. There are also humans like Zeltrons that have red skin.

Chiss are just human with blue skin and red eyes. I'd warrent that a chiss/human mix would look like a child of two different human skin tones: a blending of the two.

Some of the witches from Dathomir are blue aren't they? I think Tenel Ka was blue skinned with red hair, right?

Not blue skin, but she does have red hair.

There was a line in Heir to the Empire, IIRC, that talked about Thrawn and him having a hint of alien background. I don't remember what the exact words were and don't feel like going to get the book out of my car to check, but I got the impression that Thrawn was part human when I read it the first time. So even if he wasn't, it would, apparently, be possible.

I'll bet that almost all near-Humans are compatible with one another. The backstory for one of my as-yet unseen fanfiction characters is that he's half-Chiss, half-Kiffar (a Separatist Commodore), so he's got flesh-tone-ish skin, dreadlocks, and glowing red eyes.

Is Sev'Rance Tann the mother? ;)

I too have a human/Chiss pairing, and the complications children make the story that much more delicious...

No, actually...if she was, he wouldn't have picked up on her tactical genius. He's going to be portrayed as somewhat of a more incompetent villain - not bumbling, but just not particularly clever.

They're everywhere, but we still don't know a damned thing about them. If I were George Lucas, I'd skip over Palpatine and just make a movie about Thrawn :)

    At least Zahn's around :)

Remember, species become different when they can no longer reproduce effectively with each other. Separate populations divided by space and time cannot reproduce, because they would become more like each other and be one species. And, for those of you about to argue that the Chiss and humans did not develop on the same planet (or developed rapidly into separate species so long ago that their evolution is potentially very far off), does anyone find parallel evolution very likely in this universe, even if it is star wars? Mmmm, no. I just think that too many differing (even tiny ) variables in a planet's ecology would make this a very rare phenomena.

    Sorry.

For what reason do Chiss have glowing red eyes? I don't know that it's ever been explained, but there must be some reason. Perhaps they see in different wavelengths or something.

At any rate, it's possible a half-breed would have vision problems because the physiology there is so obviously different. Other subtle problems, such as the abnormal growth rate, could make it dangerous or impossible for both the mother and the baby to conceive a half-breed naturally, even if the Chiss are close enough to be considered a human subspecies.

You'd think that despite the problems, however, it would be possible with genetic manipulation.
