Have to say that this is subject that I know nothing about, because it gets very little support in the mainline media. This is not to say that it isn't a vibrant area of music; apparently, it is extremely successful financially.

Perhaps you could give a run down of the successful acts. I think Amy Grant is the one I've heard of.

    Personal favorites include:

As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, The Chariot Demon Hunter, Five Iron Frenzy, Flyleaf, FM Static, Haste the Day, Hawk Nelson, Kutless, MxPx, Norma Jean, The OC Supertones, Relient K, Switchfoot, Thousand Foot Krutch, Underoath, Zao.

I'm sure there's more, but those are the ones that pop into my mind. All really good rock, metal, ska and punk bands that I love listening to.

wow...I've only heard of two of those, Kutless and Switchfoot

    Zaz

Here's the big info run down:

Christian rock is an alternate form of music created by those more deeply involved in the religious aspects of their lives. It does not gain much media support because it is counter cultural. I find this music a wonderful alternative to the inappropriate secular music out there. As a study has shown new music of secular origins degrade womens worth while new, and old, music of religious origins show women as equals to men as God intended us to be. Yes Amy Gran is Christian Rock

    Other bands/singers include:

    • Switchfoot
      Kutless
      Mercy Me
      Rebecca St. James
      Nicole Nordamin
      Bebo Norman
      Jars of Clay
      Casting Crown
      Tobymac
      DCtalk
      David Crowder Band
      ZOEgirl
      Barlow Girl
      SuperChicks
and many many more that I forget

Those are just a few that I listen to.

I'd consider Creed to be the biggest and most hated Christian rock band of all time.

    I'd guess I'll say I'm a closet fan? ;)

I think that Christian music sorta falls into two different categories. There's bands like MxPx who are Christians yet don't necessarily play music with "God themed" lyrics. Then you have the artists like Hill Song or Matt Redman who play what I'd call Worship music. It's the kind of stuff a more contempory church or a University group (such as Campus Crusade or Intervarsity)might play at a service. Two vastly different approaches to Christian Music

Oh and for the record, I love MxPx and Relient K. Five Iron is also pretty good. As for Worship music, David Crowder's got some good stuff and Chris Tomlin, Jars of Clay, Matt Redman, Charlie Hall, and Jeremy Camp all have a few songs I like.

Low is a band I enjoy very, very much. They are a band of Christians but not a "Christian band".

I cannot stomach "Christian bands" because the "Christian" part in many cases supplants the "band" part.

I listen to a lot of what could be called Christian rock; but then I don't care about genre. A lot of Christian music sucks terribly (Amy Grant, for one, frankly), but then there are those other artists who are incredibly talented people that just happen to be Christian.

Jennifer Knapp is a folksy acoustic based rocker who writes incredibly brilliant songs about the struggle to maintain faith in a world of pain. Third Day is a southern based rock band that continues to amaze with hard edge, rootsy sound and faith based lyrics. Michael W. Smith is a brilliant songwriter and composer who addresses faith in a way that is moving and poignant and affirming.

Those are probably the cream of the crop right there; people who I think can stand beside the great artists of all time. To me, it doesn't matter what you talk about, as long as you talk about it with intelligence and emotional resonance.

U2 continues to let faith permeate their music and Dylan's Christian period is as good as his secular period. And then there was a time when people like Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield could talk about faith openly, when the Rolling Stones could sing a song like You've Got to Move on an album like Sticky Fingers and no one batted an eye.

Sadly, faith in music has become just another wall; it is my aim to fly by all these nets, you might say. Great music is great music and I personally don't care if it's devout and faith-permeated or atheistic and profane. Great music is great music. Shame more people don't feel the same way.

mikadojedi, allow me to put artists to some of those songs. :) Keep in mind many of the ones you?ve listed have been covered numerous times over and you may know a different version than me.

Above All ? Michael W. Smith or Lenny LeBlanc
Celebrate Jesus, Celebrate ? The Alleluia Singers
    I Can Only Imagine(FAVORITE SONG) - MercyMe
Awesome God ? maybe the Praise Band version from WoW
Shine Jesus, Shine ? Graham Kendrick
Open the Eyes of my Heart ? Michael W. Smith
God of Wonders ? City on a Hill
I'm Coming Back to the Heart of Worship ? Michael W. Smith
    Hungry ? Kathryn Scott
Rock of Ages ? Praise Band

    As for my favorites?

Audio Adrenaline (classic, just great song after great song. They?ll be missed, but I?m looking forward to Tyler?s solo debut)
dc Talk (rich, diverse yet signature style)
Five Iron Frenzy (pretty unique band, but ?On Distant Shores? alone should be enough to propel them into the favorites category)
Hawk Nelson (only just released their sophomore album, but already showing a lot of growth)
Kutless (rock hard while sounding like music, good lyrics)
Newsboys (I tend to prefer the era of ?Shine? and ?Breakfast? to the worship stuff, but it?s all quite good. Haven?t heard Go yet)
Relient K (With an e. *ahem* Thank you. Anyway, they just seem to be getting better. I dig the new album more every time I listen to it)
Switchfoot (Fantastic rock sound, and truly challenging lyrics)
TobyMac (The most successful of the dc Talk members. I don?t have Portable Sounds yet, but Momentum and Welcome to Diverse City both made me like hip hop songs. What the heck?)

    I also like?

ApologetiX (a ? okay, the ? Christian parody band with admittedly shaky early days, but they seem to get less uneven as time goes on)
Casting Crowns (the first album was an excellent debut; the second kind of blended together for me. Maybe if I borrowed it from someone to give it another listen?)
MercyMe (Honestly, I prefer the Coming Up to Breathe rock sound to the Undone contemporary. I appreciate the talent in those efforts, but I just plain enjoy listening to the new album)
O.C. Supertones (Don?t own any Supertones yet, but they are a great ska band)
Third Day (Rogue mentioned ?em, and I tend to like all their songs I hear)
Chris Tomlin (More worship than rock, but it?s done so well)
The Ws (Most know them only for ?Devil is Bad?, but their other songs are swingin? awesomeness too)

I'm right with Rogue on this. I really don't go for people like Amy Grant whose hearts are in the right place perhaps, but who frankly aren't very good musicians (Point of Grace, anyone?). In honesty, I find that the majority of "Christian music" I've heard over the years has been like this. A lot of the lyrics also sound like what they think God wants them to say, rather than what they actually feel and may be struggling with, as well as things that don't relate directly to God at all.

I agree on Michael W. Smith. Though his musical style isn't always to my taste, I have great respect for him. He's a very talented musician (which shows on his entirely instrumental album). His lyrics are good, and I do like some of his songs. It's just not quite my style.

I would have to say that Five Iron Frenzy is the only band I listen to that's put in the "Christian music" section of the store (well, and their offshoot Brave Saint Saturn). But like you, Rogue, I don't like labels. Especially because FIF is a vastly different kind of band with a vastly different aim and message than someone like Amy Grant. I'd say about a third of FIF's songs are about faith, a third are about criticisms (both of self but also of mainstream Christianity and America), and a third are not really about anything but are generally nerdy/funny. Unfortunately, it's this third kind that got noticed by most listeners, which really saddened the band members. Sure, "Blue Comb 78" is fun, but where are the people demanding the challenging confessionals and messages of songs like "Farenheit" and "451"?

FIF is my favourite band and frankly was my equivalent of a youth pastor when I was younger as we bounced around from rotten church to rotten church looking for people who had a clue what the Bible said. And speaking of favourites and artists who have really shaped my view, I think you can't have this thread without mentioning Johnny Cash. I think Rogue and U2 would agree with me :p
