    Chyntucks

    Chapter 1

Jedi master Bret Craddock – head of the Intel department – was busy with a report when he heard the sound of caf poured into cups. He stood up and walked to the common room where he saw Ker Zomorian and his padawan Tim Kirwin busy with the caf-machine. “Ker, Tim, come with me.” Bret poured a cup of caf and headed back to his office, sat down and reached for the saberdart thrower now used as a sugar-dispenser. Standing there on his desk the item could mesmerize visitors from departments. Finan and admin Jedi always commented on the useless weapon and healers always asked why it was used for sugar.

“Sugar addict.” Ker came in, sat down and began to sip from his black caf.

“Jodi caught it before it could harm you and I had another use for it to keep the sugar safe from the temple mice,” Bret poured sugar in his cup. “And you Tim need some jungle training and for that.” He took a sip from the caf, got more sugar. “Go with Ker to...”

“Kashyyyk?” Tim got a smile on his face. “I have had lessons from master Tyvokka and he could tell me about his love for the chyntuck that he misses so much here, the malevolent creatures living there in the shadowlands. Terentateks and wyyyschokk spi...”

“Before you tell me all about Kashyyyk.” Bret interrupted. “I am not that malleable young man but Kashyyyk why not. Go and get some gear that is suitable to wear on Kashyyyk.”

“To Jeki Eki my padawan.” Ker finished his caf.

“And I will send master Tyvokka a message that you will bring some chyntucks for him and me.” Bret poured more sugar. “Chyntucks made into a delicious stew. I have had that once when I met him in the restaurant of Serinka.”

“Getting gear.” Tim left with his master and turned his head.“We will bring chyntucks.”

I guess I should say that I love the title, but yes, I love the title :p and I am disproportionately pleased that my favourite Kashyyyk root vegetable gets to be the star of the show.

I can completely understand why visitors to Bret Craddock's office would be puzzled by the fact that he uses a saberdart thrower as a sugar dispenser, but hey, if the Temple has mice and it works, why not?

And your mention of chyntuck stew had my brain racing for a recipe I could come up with =P~ I have a feeling that this story will send me back to the kitchen to experiment...

More fun in the next chapter
You will see after the next chapter
He is there as the Wookiee to get lessons from
The recipe will come but first some gear

    Chapter 2

Tim had a smile on his face when he saw a little girl juggling with hats and depositing them on the shelves. He had heard it from Jeki Eki. The Dorophin Jedi-knight had been searching for a padawan and had found her during one of the tournaments. 'She is tiny but quite adept at fighting and you will meet her soon' was what he had said. That soon had turned to be weeks with the girl being to her classes when he needed something from the techies and met Jeki Eki or Chenbi Junno. But now she was there and walked towards him and Ker.

“I am Eunice Kiriani padawan of Jeki Eki.” The girl shook hands with Tim and Ker. “My master is.” She looked around and around, peeked up and ran towards the back of the workplace. “He is here.”

Ker and Tim had followed the girl and saw a large heap of furs, blankets, cloaks, all with the same dark brown color.

“Is there a Wookiee inside?” Tim tugged playfully at a piece of fur.

Eunice began to help him, removing a blanket

“It's me.” Jeki Eki leapt from the heap. “Padawan Kiriani get busy with those hats. After that you have some fish to catch.”

“Yes master.” Eunice hurried away with a smile on her face. She could visit Serinka in his restaurant for a cooking lesson.

Jeki Eki knew he could teach her to become a great Jedi-knight but a spy? No, a teacher or a negotiator would be her goal. He turned to his visitors. “And you don't need to disguise as a Wookiee Tim to go to Kashyyyk. Follow me for some gear suited for the jungle. And take one of the freighters from our department to get there.”

“How did you know that we are going to Kashyyyk?” Tim shook his head.

“Master Tyvokka told me in Serinka's restaurant about his longing for chyntucks and the eager listening padawan he saw in his classes when he began his lecture about his homeplanet. He knew that someday, that same padawan would be asking for a training on Kashyyyk and here you are.” Jeki Eki headed to a shelf with brown and beige shirts and trousers. “This should be your size and that, try them. And your boots and belts should do. No need to change those. And take these two backpacks. They have everything you need for a camping trip and of course a container for the chyntucks.”

Ker and Tim changed into the offered clothes and gave their beige Jedi tunics and trousers to Jeki Eki.

“And bring those clothes and backpacks back in the same condition.” Jeki Eki gave a stern look to Ker. “You have a habit to copy our chief.”

“I will try.” Ker hurried away with Tim and heard Jeki Eki's voice.

    “There is no try.”

I love the title too, of course, and love the idea of these Jedi being sent on a culinary quest for these chyntucks; that will be one tasty stew, and I am sure Tyvokka will be over the moon with delight. I enjoyed meeting Eunice! She will definitely inject some gaiety and excitement into the quest, I can tell, and I can't wait to see how that will go! =D=

    Chapter 3

“Is this the place where Revan landed the Ebon Hawk?” Tim walked down the ramp of their JE748 freighter with his backpack. It had taken them two days to get there.

“It could be.” Ker followed his padawan. “We got the permission to land here after our navcomp selected this platform from the large data-base available in all our Intel department freighters. I made our mission known to the droid to go for some training. And got a warning: Don't go below the fourth level so.”

“We are going to the fourth level without terentateks but lots of other vermin.” Tim walked resolutely to a self service elevator and selected the level after Ker joined him and closed the door of the cage.

    “You are wasting no time.”

“We have only 10 hours to explore. That's what you told that droid. We have to get the chyntucks. They need to be fresh to be made by Serinka into a nice stew. After a week they are too old to use.”

Descending down with the elevator showing the stops on the viewscreen the light of the sun began to get obscured by the giant wroshyr tree-branches and the various foliage clinging to the trees. A brown flash revealed a Wookiee using one of the thick vines to climb down at a fast pace. Sounds of birds, insects and reptilian creatures mingled and changed into more sinister cries and mumblings when the second level was passed and made way for the third level. Green became darker green mingled with brown and grey. Bioluminescent carnivorous flying creatures tried to enter the elevator but were repelled by the protective screen of the elevator.

The elevator stopped at the fourth level and Tim programmed it to stay. “Our way to return to the top and now some searching for chyntucks. They should be this color.” He showed a picture on his comlink. “And there are no big carnivorous creatures yet. But...” he swatted away a brown fly that landed on his left hand. “There are these meat-lovers. We should use fly-repellant.”

Ker had reached into his backpack, produced a flask and used it on the unprotected skin of him and his padawan.

A fly – homing in to land on Ker's hand – made a hasty retreat.

“There, Jeki Eki knows how to make bug-scare-away repellent.”

Tim grabbed a vine hanging from a branch of a wroshyr tree when he spotted a large opening a short distance away. “There Ker. We should explore that cave for chyntucks.” He swung the vine and he went flying towards the opening, grabbing more vines to get there and confident that his master was following.

Ker did but was behind and hanging from a vine when he saw Tim landing on the platform before the cave.

A vicious howl. A creature with spines and claws became visible.

“Terentatek.” Tim jumped back, tried to grab the last vine and missed. And began to fall.

“Got you.” Ker let go of his vine, grabbed another hanging from a branch of the tree and doing this he managed to catch Tim by his boot holding on with his left hand to the vine.

The branch to which the vine was attached began to creak and tear.

    “Not good.” Ker shouted.

Yes! I remember this location well from KOTOR and smiled to see that Ker and Tim made the connection to Revan too. Wonderful descriptions; I feel like I’m there amid the lush vegetation. But as our heroes soon find out, there is definitely no shortage of nasties—and terentateks are serious business! These two are brave indeed to brave this kind of danger for cooking ingredients! Can’t wait to see what will be next! =D=

And you will see who rescues them
    Not at all
Intel has their archives and Kashyyyk was nice to explore playing KotOR
They sure are and Ker could only do this before starting to...

    Chapter 4

    “Yarrhh rrrruuunnnn.”

A cry. Hairy paws grabbing the breaking branch.

Ker held on to the vine, felt himself and Tim being deposited near the elevator and saw the severed branch in the hands of a known sentient.

“We are rescued by a Wookiee.”

    “Mmmmrrrr.”

“Grrgaaggaa.” Ker let go of Tim's boot and looked up to see a brown Wookiee with a bandolier around his torso and a bowcaster strung to it looking down.

“Hey you have followed master Tyvokka's lessons too.” Tim struggled up.

    “Chewbacca orrrr rwwrhhriiirrr.”

“This is mine?” Ker accepted the severed branch.

“Grrrrrrrrgaahga.” Chewbacca answered. “Hhhummghhra nwurrr rowrigghh wroshyr branch.”

“Ah the branch was meant for me.” Ker accepted the wroshyr tree branch and continued in basic. “It was there when we needed it and you had to grab it to rescue us. We were searching for chyntucks, liked by Wookiee Jedi-master Tyvokka.” He took the container from his backpack.

“And I tried to get to that cave but there was that Terentatek and I jumped back.”

“Caught by me and by Chewbacca.” Ker said.

“Yarrrl chyyyntuccck.” Chewbacca took the container, swung to a distant tree and came back with the container filled with chyntucks. He gave it to Tim “Tyvokka ggrrgaaggaa.”

“Grrgaagaa Chewbacca.” Tim turned to his master. “Mission fulfilled. Let's get those chyntucks home.” He walked to the elevator.

“Thanks Chewbacca.” Ker followed his padawan and used the branch as a walking stick.

“Hhhummghhra nwurrr rowrigghh.” Chewbacca leapt down catching a vine.

“Yes I will find some use for it.” Ker examined the branch after closing the door of the cage.

    “What?” Tim selected up.

“A hiding place for my lightsaber. And do you like to explore more of this jungle?”

“No, I have seen enough and we have the chyntucks. And I like to taste them.”

The elevator began to ascend to the landing platform.

The sun began to shine through the leaves of the trees. Birds were singing, insects were buzzing and sampling the beautiful flowers nested among the crevices in the trees.

The elevator came to a stop. Ker and Tim left it and headed up the ramp of the JE748 freighter.

“Get us home Tim. It will be a nice lesson for you piloting this freighter.”

The recipe is coming in the final chapter and it is based on the stew the inhabitants of Leiden found at the gate after a long siege by the Spanish army
Going home is regular but going to the restaurant is ...
    I used the WOOK
    And now the finish

    Chapter 5

“No, I didn't copy chief Craddock.” Ker was changing into his usual clothes and depositing the shirt and trousers on Jeki Eki's desk. “Some cleaning is all they need.”

“And we have the chyntucks for master Tyvokka.” Tim – ready with his changing – pulled out the container from the backpack and gave it to Jeki Eki. “Uh I didn't see your padawan.”

“Eunice is having cooking lessons and with that.” Jeki Eki took the container “we should go there to see how Serinka can make it into a nice stew. I have sent master Tyvokka a message when I saw your return.”

“He should be there and I like to sample those chyntucks.” Ker put down the piece of wroshyr branch. “After that I will come here to turn this into a hiding place for my lightsaber using your tools.”

“Agreed.” Jeki Eki left with Ker and Tim the workplace.

    - - -

Entering Serinka's restaurant in the basement of the Jedi-temple Tim and Ker halted just after passing the entrance before the counter.

A fish was flying towards them, held in the air by Eunice Kiriani and opening its mouth.

“Welcome back master Zomorian and padawan Kirwin.” the fish with the voice of Eunice mouthed. “Do you have the required extra ingredients to make a stew?”

“Yes fish, are you being used to display some frivolous use of the Force or is this just a lesson?” Ker laughed. “Jeki Eki is bringing them to Serinka. See and your friend can help him. So get back to the kitchen mister Fish.”

“Get seated master Zomorian.” the fish mouthed. “Serinka will bring your stew.”

“We will.” Ker walked with Tim to a table and saw master Tyvokka coming to their table.

    “You have brought chyntucks.”

“Yes, Tim spotted a Terentatek in a cave that could have them. I caught Tim holding on to my vine when the wroshyr-tree branch broke. A warrior named Chewbacca saved us, got the chyntucks for us and told me to take the branch. So here we are and we like to sample the stew. Uh what are the other ingredients?”

“Nerf-chops, orange-red tubers, onions and the chyntucks.” Master Tyvokka replied.

“Aw, not for me.” Ker shrugged with his shoulders. “I am a vegetarian.”

“Just wait.” Master Tyvokka walked to the kitchen.

Some waiting and he came back with three plates. “All with chyntucks but these two are without the Nerf-chops. Enjoy your meal.”

    - - -

After enjoying the stew Ker was walking to an elevator with Jeki Eki and Tim. He smiled when he saw an older Jedi-knight taking a wide berth from them and sniffing. “Chyntucks sure are smelly.”

“They are and the smell will scare the temple-mice away.” Jeki Eki said. “They are even stronger than that garlic used by Serinka.”

“Bret will continue to use his saberdart thrower turned sugar dispenser.” Ker said. “There are mice everywhere.”

“And cats.” Tim said. “I hope Serinka doesn't feed the leftovers from the stew to the cats in the crèches.”

“He doesn't.” Jeki Eki said. “Master Tyvokka will claim all the stew made with his beloved chyntucks.”

This review-and-reply exchange just won the internet [face_laugh]

Loved the description of the lower levels of Kashyyyk with the darkness and the carnivorous flies and other friendly beasties! Tim was very eager to explore – perhaps a little too much – but that terentatek took the wind out of his sails! and it was lovely to see Chewbacca turn up and save the day; we always see him at Han's side on starships, and we tend to forget that he's quite at home in the forest. And now we have the backstory of Ker's lightsaber-hiding walking stick! It's extra-special now that we know how and from who he got it.

I also found that the master-padawan pairing of Jeki Eki and Eunice Kiriani was super-sweet. Jeki is an organised man who's fed up with Jedi spooks ruining the equipment he gives them, but he has his hands full now with bubbly little Eunice who likes to puppeteer fish with the Force! That stew sure sounds amazing, and I already have in mind an adaptation of a Greek dish called stifado to match the description of “Nerf-chops, orange-red tubers, onions and the chyntucks.”

And now, I can only wish Tyvokka bon appétit! (or 'argrrghargkk' in the original Shyriiwook :p )
