    * * * *

    "Shh! He's coming!"

    "Does he look taller?"

    "What's with the yellow eyes?"

    "We're going to die."

"Oh, spast! He looks mad enough to rip the arms off a Wookiee."

    "He always looks like that."

    "SHH!"

Hiding made little sense at all, considering he would know exactly where each of them were, and yet the cluster of younglings somehow found it necessary to duck behind any piece of furniture available to mask their visible presence in the darkened Council Chamber.

The Crèche-Masters were certainly wise in their tradition of teaching various lessons in the Council Chamber. The place was daunting when any Jedi found themselves at the center of this room surrounded by a curious group of grumpy old Masters, but there was also a sense of warmth, safety, and security as well, since they had often trained and even played in this room long before they were ever summoned before the Council.

Today, however, the approach of the ultra-powerful being clad in a robe barely a shade lighter than the blackest night stole away all the safety and security from this room like a vortex.

Kae-Ren couldn't bear to watch what was coming. With his eyes clenched shut, he knelt behind one of the large holo-projection seats as the Chamber doors slid open and a silent figure slipped into the room with an eerie presence that defied the sense of amusement that seemed to roll off him.

"Younglings," the raspy voice called out.

    Silence.

"Younglings." Shorter, lower, and this time accompanied by the rap of a gimmer-stick on the durasteel flooring.

Okay, so maybe he could bear to watch a little bit. Lifting his head slowly, he peered over the top of the chair, then had to stifle a laugh... amidst an entire room of giggling.

Kae-Ren thought it had been too easy to sneak into Master Yoda's meditation chamber and swap out his robe, but seeing the ancient Jedi standing there in the makeshift costume unleashed a fit of side-splitting laughter. The poor Jedi Master's ears poked out from inside the dark hood that covered his face, which he wore like a good sport with his entire face hidden except for the little revealed by the pale yellow glow-orbs dangling from the top of the hood to serve as his 'eyes'.

Most everyone in the Temple would agree: Master Yoda was funny-looking by any standard...

But proudly dressed as a Jawa in an outfit made by a group of ten-year-old younglings...

"Kae-Ren," Yoda said calmly, silencing the younglings' laughter and most of the giggling. "Something to do with this you have?"

It was no secret to anyone that Kae wasn't likely to make a particularly good Jedi, but if he was going to spend his life in the service of the Agri-Corps, he was certainly going to make sure he enjoyed himself in the Temple while he could.

"Yes, Master," he admitted with a broad smile.

"So I guessed," the Jawa sighed, relying on his gimmer-stick to hobble toward the young dark-haired boy. "So I guessed. A good prank this was," he admitted, halting before Kae and staring coolly at him for a moment. The pale yellow light of the glow-orbs danced in the old Jedi Master's eyes, and Kae noted what seemed to be a grin slowly stretch out on Yoda's darkened face. "Mmm... but not the best."

The old Master then leaned forward and spoke very softly. "From the Master you will learn now, hmm?"

    * * * *

    Now, Kae... clear your mind.

    Yes, Master.

    What troubles you, hmm?

Dreams, Master. I have dreams... o

Great start! Very funny, but I have a feeling that hilarious beginning is going to be paralleled by a not-so-hilarious ending -

    - where the black-hooded figure will still have yellow eyes, but he'll be taller and angrier, and there won't be as much giggling. :(

Keep up the great work! :D

The image of Yoda as a Jawa is priceless. [face_laugh] I thought the younglings were hiding from Anakin and the clone troops, and I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a light-hearted moment. However, I have the feeling things are about to grow more grim.

    Loved it!

Many thanks for reading... here's the conclusion:

    * * * *

    "Good morning, Master Shaak-Ti."

The colorful Togruta blanched slightly as she entered the Council Chambers, apparently surprised that a group of younglings with their reputation for occasional misbehavior would remember her name.

"And a good morning it is," she replied, a smile replacing her initial surprise while she strode to the center of the room and clasped her hands in front of her. "Master Yoda sends his regrets," she informed them plainly, "but his duties have taken him away from the Temple for a time."

This was actually an odd statement, since Master Yoda seldom ventured away long enough to miss lightsaber training with his clan of younglings. Kae-Ren fought hard to not let a smirk form on his face or allow Master Shaak-Ti to sense his amusement through the Force, which took all his concentration.

"I think I can remember most of your names," she continued, looking at each of the children in the room, one by one, until she looked beyond Kae to the hooded figure standing next to him. Master Ti's head tilted slightly for a moment as though she had lost her train of thought. "Except... for you. Come little one," she encouraged, stepping over toward Kae and the 'youngling' in the dark robe, "it's quite rude to wear hoods inside the Temple."

"Oh, no," Kae objected, defending his clanmate. "This is Needee. He always wears his hood. That's what Jawas do."

"Needee!" the little hooded figure cried in agreement.

Master Ti stood and looked down suspiciously at the Jawa youngling, placing her hands on her hips. "I don't remember there being a Jawa in this clan..."

"He's from Master Joben's clan," another of the children interjected helpfully.

"I see," Master Ti acknowledged. "Then tell me, Padawan Needee, have you been in Master Yoda's clan for very long?"

    "Needee!"

"Yes, I know your name," Master Ti said sweetly, attempting to mask her confusion.

    "Needee!"

"It's okay, Master Shaak-Ti," Kae tried to explain. "That's all he ever says."

Master Ti didn't look like she was being fooled at all. "He only says 'Needee'?"

"That's what Jawas do," informed a rich voice from the Chamber doorway.

Master Ti turned to face the grinning newcomer leaning casually against the doorway.

"Good morning, Master Obi-Wan," the chorus of younglings greeted happily.

"Needee!" cried the Jawa next to Kae.

Master Ti craned her head back around to look suspiciously at the Jawa for a moment before sighing and looking wearily toward Master Obi-Wan.

"Master Kenobi," she began. "How pleasant of you to stop by."

The legendary Jedi Master's smile stretched until it was lost in his beard. "I was just checking to make sure you're okay handling the younglings by yourself."

Kae and the other younglings tried hard not to giggle or let their feelings alert Master Ti when her lightsaber gingerly lifted and unhooked itself from her belt and slowly floated through the room to Needee's awaiting green fingers and disappeared in the sleeve of his cloak.

Only a slight darting of Master Obi-Wan's eyes let them know he wasn't going to say anything.

"Thank you, Master Kenobi," Master Shaak-Ti declined politely, "but I think I have things well in hand."

"So it would seem," Master Obi-Wan replied. "It's just that Master Yoda wanted me to tell you to be cautious with one of the younglings... Padawan Needee."

    "Needee!"

Master Ti stole another suspicious glance back at the little Jawa. "Did he?"

"Oh, yes," Master Obi-Wan said very animatedly and seriously before Master Ti returned her thoughtful glare back to him. "He can be quite a handful."

    "So it seems."

The Jawa nudged Kae and a small green hand passed him the power-cell from a lightsaber.

Obi-Wan dutifully ignored them and continued the conversation. "He's quite powerful, for a youngling, but his Jedi abilities are somewhat random."

    "Sounds like your Anakin."

Obi-Wan laughed. "Not quite. Needee needs..."

    Wow.

That's the first fic in a long time that has made me whimper in sorrow.

    :_| :_| :_|

You really made me love Kae-Ren, made me see how much Yoda must have cared for his Jedi siblings and children. And then you killed him right before his moment of honor... I'm so touched!

A very Yoda fanfiction; mischevious at times, wise at times, very solemn and serious and old at times...like at the ending, when you can just feel how long this Master has actually lived and how much pain and heartbreak he has had to endure even before this.

Beautiful work, going from funny to hopeful and then straight to tragic.

bobill: You really made me love Kae-Ren, made me see how much Yoda must have cared for his Jedi siblings and children.

Thanks! :) I was hoping to convey a little bit about his relationship with them... good to know that it worked.

Ooh, thanks for the praise! And thanks for reading!

Yup. One doesn't live to be that old without experiencing quite a bit of heartache. It makes you wonder why he befriends the younglings...

    Thanks for reading!

That was amazing, the way you transitioned these characters so seamlessly from the hilarity at the beginning to the tragic ending.

"Where mortals dare not, tread valiantly, you have," he mourned, lowering the shimmering blade and deftly severing the braid from Kae-Ren's temple. He extinguished the lightsaber and carefully reached down to place the hilt firmly in Kae's hand. "Sleep well, young Knight. Earned it, you have."

    This was beautiful.

    Excellent! :)
