Hello, this is my first post/topic here :)
I was wondering whether there was a site or a link were you can find the complete patterns and measurements for a Darth Maul costume. I noticed that a lot of people make their own here, but I am a complete novice on costume making, and I need something that is like a detailed guide that is step-by-step based. I can't do the obiwansjedi academy one as it is at a level that is too advanced for me.

Welcome, EECHUTA! You can find many topics about the Maul costume. However, if you are a novice and the OJA is too advanced for you... I really don't know what to say except you might want to start on a simpler costume (i.e. a regular Jedi) and have someone else make the Maul for you. Glad to have you aboard!

Thank you for the welcome! :) I shouldn't have said that I was a COMPLETE novice, I can sew and probably follow a pattern if its broken down a bit. Plus my mother might help me if I reaaly need it, as she is able. What I am looking for is a complete pattern, where you can see the shape and size of each individual clothing piece shown in a pattern outline. I don't mind if the patterns are taken from the Pepsi Maul's costume, as I am not particular and would be happy. This is a beginner Maul costume project, and so I would be using cheaper materials than what the more movie accurate ones call for, so a Pepsi Maul pattern would be fine. If there is a link or I can PM somebody for a pattern, please let me know, as I would be MOST grateful.

Can somebody post the link to Obi wan's Jedi Academy? I am not sure if I've heard of this site before.

A "Pepsi Maul" is just the term I coined concerning the lifesized Maul statues that were given away by Pepsi to help promote The Phantom Menace.
A "Pepsi Maul costume" is merely the clothes that were on the statue. I had heard that these costumes could be worn as a real costume if you were the correct size and shape. And I imagine these were dissasembled to figure out the clothes pattern so they could be replicated. Hopefully I can find a pattern so I can make one myself.

Too bad you can't find a Pepsi Maul costume anywhere, I'd love to have one.

Yeah, I know. They seem to be in short supply these days.:_| I just hope its not true of the patterns too. Has anybody tried StarFortressProductions? If you have, how were your experiences buying from them? I have heard bad things and good things about them, so I'm trying to decide. I might have to try that or Kropserkel as a last resort if I really can't find a detailed pattern.

For your first costume , that is very ambitious of you. Darth Maul's Cape only is made of 30 or 35 yards of 100% wool according to Ray during one of the chatts at the 501st dinner. Have you noticed the pleating? There was a company on ebay which sold the cloack for 1000 dollars. It was absolutelly beautiful and worth every penny of it. However, if you wish to make the attempt to do this with no experience than draw a flat sketch of the tunic peices, there are couple or three layers and than go to the fabric store, buy some patterns which will give you some of the peices and put them together. A sleeve from one , a tunic from another and so on. Patterns to draft to specs are so expensive that I doubt that any pattern maker would just give their patterns away without cost. Good luck.

I read in "dressing a galaxy" that the pleated part of Darth Maul's cloak was done using a technique called "Sun ray pleating'. If I'm correct, it's the same technique used to make belly dancer's Isis wings.- the pleats at the top of the piece start out very small, and get wider as they go down to the hem, producing that sun-ray effect. Usually people who make Isis wings have the fabric parts professionally steam pleated.

Hmmm...Well, maybe its better that I don't try something like that until I get more experience. I probably would get frustrated with something like that, and end up having thrown my money away on rolls of fabric and stuff on a project that I might never complete out of frustration. Plus I tend to have a bad tendency of failing to complete the things I've started. Maybe I'll buy a costume instead. Ah well.

heres a idea someone had told me... try getting a Maul 12inch figure/doll with the removable clothes. It may give you and basic idea on how his pattern might be. I never tried it so i dont know. Good luck.

Like I said, start with something easy like a Jedi. A good pattern to use is Simplicity #4450 (although since Simplicity had to get rid of all their SW patterns it might be hard to find).

Is there a list of Star Wars Simplicity patterns? Why did they take them off the selling list? and how much does the patterns cost?
