    CHAPTER 1

I don't need to fall at your feet
Just 'cause you cut me to the bone
And I won't miss the way that you kiss me
We were never carved in stone

~Go West, King of Wishful Thinking

    *****
"It's family members only," the medic's aide stated with a kind of finality that implied the classification was non-negotiable.

This was not unexpected, since non-Jedi rarely understood the kind of bonds that were formed between those who were servants of the Force. A smile, persuasive charm, and the possibility of a small mind-trick were all that he needed to circumvent the woman's stubbornness. Jaina would object, of course, but would understand eventually and, a few minutes after that, she'd agree that it was for the best.

He'd seen her on heavy pain medication enough times to know that she was as good as mind-tricked in that state.

"Well," he sighed with a sympathetic grin, "her only official family's about a six-day journey away and she's got to be feeling lonely. I figure that her best friend is the next best thing, don't you?"

The woman was, unsurprisingly, unamused and unconvinced. She stared at him dispassionately over the edge of the datapad, clearly debating the merits of calling Security on someone with that much charisma. Apparently, white teeth and green eyes weren't her weak spots.

    "Are you Kyp Durron?"

At that, he let out a sigh of relief. His fame couldn't have spread this far, no matter how many delusions of grandeur he'd had since the age of sixteen, so Jaina obviously had mentioned him.

"I'm on the list, aren't I?" he guessed with a smirk.

"Oh, you're on a list, all right," she agreed, matching his smirk centimeter for centimeter. "We have a list of people that she wants under a restraining order..."

This was getting him nowhere and he didn't like it one bit.

Between a wave of his hand and a flash of his teeth, a Jedi mind-trick might just work.

"The list doesn't matter..." he murmured soothingly, gazing deep into her yellow eyes.

She gazed right back, but there was nothing soothing about it.

"Uh-huh," she grunted. "Should I call Security personally or can you summon them with the Force?"

He was about to cajole, wheedle, beg, or simply pull rank on her when a call signal came up on the screen.

    317.

    Jaina's room.

"You stay right there or I won't wait for Security," she threatened.

"Yes, ma'am," he said in feigned meekness.

No more than thirty seconds later, she grudgingly gestured for him to follow her.

Jaina had either changed her mind or wanted to kill him herself. His credits were on the latter option at this point.

The room was private, as all chambers in Intensive Care tended to be. She was conscious, which was better than he'd hoped for, but the respirator remained in place. The doctor had claimed that it was a precautionary measure, since someone with that much trauma to her ribcage typically had difficulty breathing on their own. He could see little, since there were too many bandages to see more than five inches of her skin at a time, but he remembered the mottled skin of her torso where she'd had one too many run-ins with the bulkhead during the attempted escape.

"It's a simple matter of bacta, isn't it?"

"Not when she has so many things that could go wrong at any given moment. We don't want to lose her just because we had to go fish. She'll have to do this the hard way."

"Knowing her, I don't think she'd want it any other way."

"You're looking better," he said lamely.

    "Liar."

Her voice was a soft rasp somewhere in the middle of the regulated breathing and there was no amused smile to make the accusation a familiar tease.

She was Sithbent on being angry with him and the worst part was that he knew he deserved it.

He knew she would have turned her back on him if she hadn't been half-paralyzed by her injuries. She wasn't even feeling strong enough to give him the Glare of Death that would be passed on for generations of Organa Solo women to come.

Ouchies. Kyp is dead. She'll probably pull a Vader on him, and he'll be playing Capt. Antilles.

"It's family members only,"[/i=].. starts right off with bad news.

Uh-huh," she grunted. "Should I call Security personally or can you summon them with the Force?" ROFLOL! Priceless line!

LOL, glad you liked that, Leona. I wrote that nurse based on Charlyn, one of the nurses I had when I was in the hospital the second time last November, who was known for having no sense of humor.

Nice mixture of tension, angst and humour, Ish. Great work. I love the annoying nurse character - although in fact they can be a pain in real life.

Great to see you using a Go West song - and that is one of my favourites by them. Ah - the 80s . . . fond recollections. :)

LOL, you'll figure it out as well. Believe me, she's not being melodramatic. Glad you liked the mean nurse. I left her unnamed so I wouldn't be tempted to call her Charlyn. Gah! Just noticed your job description. ::Sheepish grin.::

I love Kyp a lot and a lot of it is his humor, so I wanted to bring that in, but was patently afraid of making him flippant and flirtatious while the girl he adores is in ICU.

Great to see you using a Go West song - and that is one of my favourites by them. Ah - the 80s . . . fond recollections.

I'm not very familiar with them. I think I heard the song once a very long time ago, then Dantana suggested it because I asked her for a challenge to write my songfic to and she suggested this. My gratitude goes to her.

    LOL!

Its Sith-nurse! [face_devil] Well, at least Grumpy-nurse. Or maybe Mean-nurse?

As a nurse myself, I could be offended - but I've done damage control for nurses like that, so I'm not. She's a hoot! [face_laugh]

    ojn :D

Oh, yes... what the heck DID Kyp do??

Kyp what did you do now?? Though I have a feeling that Jaina's own stubburnness is just as much at blame here. I'm picturing Jaina in a sort of body cast from the sounds of things. Ouch poor Jaina those injuries don't sound friendly at all. Hope she's ok, and that she doesn't hurt Kyp all to badly. Really good Ish, likey very very much.

One of the disadvantages of having a lot of Jedi around is that people have a lower tolerance for what they try to pull instead of being awed by it. Grumpy-nurse works.

Don't worry, I didn't think of you when writing it. ;)

Augh! You posted too fast for me to notice you. Sorry. Jaina did what she thought was right, so did he, and they both got royally messed up for it--her physically, him in terms of how she thinks of him. Body cast, no, but close. She'll need braces of sorts to recover. I always seem to like torturing jaina more. She gets major surgery with novacaine, jag gets killed with one cut to the throat. Glad you like.

I'm not a K/J romance person but I am a K/J let's do something we're not supposed to and fix what we messed up later kind of person.

I can't wait to see what they were actually doing at Selonia and how Jaina got injured. Something tells me that stubborn nature she inherited from her father made her stay to do whatever she did.

I'll be waiting for the next post. (tapping her foot)

LOL, come over to the K/J side! It's just as cool as J/J, if not better (my mood changes from day to day). I'm glad this is helping you lean that way.

LOL, that kind of story is what got me into K/J in the first place! So well-put.

Ouch. Cranky nurse is not impressed by Kyp's charms at all, is she. ;) There's nothing funnier than Kyp's continual attempts to turn on the charm which end up completely backfiring, whether it's with Jaina or with someone else. ;)

I like the start of this. Looking forward to finding out exactly what Kyp did (even though I'm sure it wasn't all his fault - Jaina heaps so much blame on him unfairly. ;) )

I've actually always wanted to do that sort of scene with Han. The one time I tried in TOH2, he just snuck in anyway.

So far, not in my fics. :) And as soon as life gets a little better, you'll find out.

    Very, very intriguing stuff!

I'd say more, but I'm in kind of a hurry, so I'll be back with a longer review sooner or later... :p

But I was just wondering... was the room number 317 purely random or is it an allusion to something?

Because if you've ever heard of the musical Miss Saigon... (awesome musical by the way :D )

Just wondering. I pick up random stuff.

But I was just wondering... was the room number 317 purely random or is it an allusion to something?

As soon as you asked that, my head started playing "Now that I've seen her."

Because if you've ever heard of the musical Miss Saigon... (awesome musical by the way )

"They must have written the room number wrong
I am looking for someone named Christopher Scott
    317...oh, I'm sorry, unless...
Well, you must be of course, you're john's wife, are you not?"

That whole scene makes me cry. One line from the song "317" that applies here is "I feel walls in my heart closing in. I can't breathe; I can't win."

Just wondering. I pick up random stuff.

Good pickup. Kathryn from this board writes ROCKING miss saigon fic.
