Okay, in the trailer for the Clone Wars movie Palpatine mentions making an enemy of "the Hutt clan." This confuses me, has George Lucas once again gone back and altered years of established expanded universe canon and saying that Jabba does not belong to a species known as Hutt, but is a member of a clan called Hutt and that Jabba's species is actually something totally different? It's either that or the clip from the trailer omits the portion where someone speaks of the specific clan, which would be Tiure, that Jabba belongs to.

    Does that make sense?

maybe it's a contradiction with the EU but for the films it's fine. unless my poor memory fails me.

I haven't seen the trailer, but couldn't Palpatine be talking about the Hutt species as a whole? To me, from what you've said, I don't see anything wrong unless it contradicts the Hutts being a species.

    From wookieepedia:

All Hutts had a given name, which was supported by their clan name and surname (such as Jabba Desilijic Tiure and Borga Besadii Diori). However, few outside Hutt society were aware of various Hutts' proper names and commonly replaced the clan and surname with "the Hutt", as in "Jabba the Hutt" or "Gardulla the Hutt," although it is doubtful the Hutts minded. Hutts were furthermore divided into castes, including H'unns.

It seems to me the quote referenced in the opening post bespeaks Palpatine's ignorance about the Hutts, as mentioned in the above quote. Alternately, Palpatine could be speaking generally, referring to a clan of Hutts whose specific clan-name he does not know, and therefore refers to that unnamed clan as "the Hutt clan".

Either way, this doesn't seem like something to get upset about.

True. Anyways, I doubt that Lucas knows the names of the various Hutt clans.

Who cares? Generalizing is a common thing.

Didn't Lucas coin the word 'Huttese' in the RotJ script? That would certainly indicate that at some point he considered 'Hutt' to be something larger than just a 'clan'.'

I would suggest bringing this issue to one of our expanded universe forums such as Literature. The Star Wars Saga forum is really only intended to be a place of discussion for topics which bridge all six films. The answer to your question clearly can't be found in any of the movies, so the experts over on the EU boards would really have the answer you're looking for.

I already know the lowdown about Hutts, i'm just too lazy to post it. The wookiee entry above is spot on though.

What's wrong with people's senses? Where's the contradiction? "The Hutt clan."

It's no different to saying the Hutt syndicates or Gotal cabals. He's not saying there's an actual Hutt (name) clan. I don't understand why this has to be pointed out. The english of the quote is fine. And is Jabba not part of a Hutt clan? He has his own; his greater family not withstanding.

    Come on, now.

I believe that "Hutt" is a species, just that there isn't a very large population.
