connection between ESB and AOTC

Stop me if this has been posted before. George has said that reoccurring themes happen thought out Star Wars. I see the connection between TPM and ANH. Anakin leaving Tatooine and going on a grand adventure, Luke leaving Tatooine and also going on a grand adventure. Anakin blowing up the trade federation starship, Luke blowing up the death star. Obi-Wan watching his master killed by a sith. Luke watching Obi-Wan killed by a sith master. The only connection I see with ESB and AOTC is Anakin getting his arm chopped of in AOTC, the same as Luke in ESB. Does anybody have any more connections with AOTC and ESB.

 

There's a Fett in both episodes...

 

Land battle on Hoth. Land battle on Geonosis.

Spaceship battle in an asteroid field. Spaceship battle in the rocky debris of a planetary ring field.

 

The Sith hire bounty hunters in both episodes...

 

A skywalker gets a hand cut off with a battle with a sith

 

Structure's not too different, in that the Big Three of both trilogies split up at the end of the first act and the male and female pairing initiate a romance while separated from the third.

 

ESB and AOTC are both love stories sort've.

 

The final shots of the two films are composed similarly: Luke and Leia standing side by side looking out into the distance with the two droids standing to the side, and Anakin and Padmé standing close with the droids off to the side.

 

AOTC is like a reversed ESB: it begins in a city environment (ESB ends on cloud city), and it ends with a big ground battle (ESB begins with a big ground battle)

But the overall plot of ESB is more connected to TPM: searching the galaxy for spare hyperdrive parts.

 

There are quite many similarities.
In both episodes:
- Yoda plays big role, especially while teaching (younglings in AOTC - Luke in ESB);
- young Skywalker is loosing his hand in the duel[Anakin vs. Dooku - Luke vs. Vader];
- there is scene of temptation good character by evil Sith (Dooku/Obi - Vader/Luke);
- asteroid chase (Geonosis - Hoth);
- 3PO is "deconstructed" (in Geonosis factory - in Ughnauths factory on Bespin);
- love story (also made in similar way: first male character is trying to draw woman's attention but is rejected and then just before "execution" both [Padme and Leia] confessed their hidden feelings);
- Skywalker is going somewhere to rescue friend(s) [Anakin to Geonosis for Obi - Luke to Bespin for Leia and Han];
- loyalty of one character is kept unclear for some time (Dooku - Lando); etc. etc.

We have also visual "rhymes", for example Kamino is relatively close to Bespin; Padme's white costume (and also hairdo) on Genosis looks similar to Leia in the action scenes on Bespin.

Furhermore, there are few more subtle ones, like "Skywalker has painful, traumatic experience related to one of his parents" (Anakin witnesses death of Shmi - Luke learns that Vader is his father"). But I realize that it might be going a bit too far to call this a "parallel".

 

Clound city is pretty much Coursant of the Classic moives.

 

The Falcon hides on the back of a star destroyer and shuts down. Obi-won does the same thing while fleeing from Jango (on an astoroid)

 

Also the Cantina scene is simular to the bar scene on Corusant (excuse the spelling)

 

This brief plot synopsis fits either film:

A flying hunter droid, sent by the enemy, sets the plot into motion. As a result, the two main heroes get split up early on. One flies his personal fighter on a mission to a mysterious waterlogged planet, accompanied only by his astromech droid, while the other gets to protect the girl, and he and the girl fall in love. There is an asteroid chase, a cool armored bounty hunter, and a big ground battle involving giant walking vehicles. A hero is tormented by troubling visions of someone dear to him being in pain, leading him to travel to another planet to attempt a rescue. The villain reveals a big secret and tries to tempt a hero with a "join me and together we can bring order to the galaxy" speech. The villain also lops off a hero's limb with a lightsaber. And there's a scene where a tiny old Jedi master impressively demonstrates his amazing command of the Force. It ends with a shot of a hero (his lost limb now replaced with a mechanical one), the girl, and the droids gazing off into an uncertain future.

 

y'kno i never thought about that but yea there are a lot of connections between AOTC and ESB. also between TPM and ANH. i supposed now revenge of the sith is going to have a lot of similarities to return of the jedi.

Yes it certainly will. But obviously we can't go into that here.

I wrote up a plot synopsis in the SW Community ROTS Spoiler thread that describes the many parallels I know of (so far) between ROTJ and ROTS. It is on page 64 I believe.

 

They both have a bad ending, and then shots looking into the distance. Also in AOTC, Obi wan releases the trash to destroy the missle, and in ESB, Boba Fett knows to go out with the trash from the star destroyer

Both heroes confront their demons and give in to their baser instincts (tusken camp/cave)
