I recently saw the movie Metropolis, at least what my teacher called the best version of it because large peices of the movie have dissapeared since it was made in 1926

But anyways if anyone has ever seen it they'll know what I'm talking about when I ask did George Lucas get his idea for Coruscant from Metropolis?

For those of you who havn't seen it Metropolis is the first science fiction movie ever made and is about a city that is beyond large and tall, where the priviliged few live on the top levels and the lowly workers live in the depths of the vast city

I know he's even said that he took his design for C-3PO from the robot in Metropolis, so I'm wondering if anyone here knows if he's said that he got Coruscant from here is well

    Thanks in advance

I think it's entirely likely. And this thread reminds me to see the new versions of Metropolis. I saw the old one a long time ago, but I barely remember what happened.

The cliche of the huge industrial city, with massive skyscrapers, owed its origins to Metropolis and have been seen in everything from Blade Runner to The Crow to, yes, Coruscant. Definitely an inspiration.

And the art-deco design of Threepio was directly attributed by Ralph McQuarrie to the design of Maria (the android) in Metropolis.

Yea my teacher (of my sci-fi class) said GL showed him Maria, and basically told him

"Make me a robot as cool as that one"

But yes the cliche did come from Metropolis, so it wasn't a cliche when it came out. If you look at what the movie is trying to say then it's actually not a bad movie at all, some call it the best science fiction movie ever made, but it's not the most exciting, especially from what I hear about the fullest version left, which is over 3 hours. And that means the original version was far longer

ST-TPM-ASF-TNE, try to see the tinted version with the Queen soundtrack. The music adds a lot to it, especially in the climatic scenes.

Didn't the original soundtrack consist of a total of 2 organ numbers which simply repeated for hours?

That'd be fun to hear the same music for that long

    "It's Threepio's girlfriend."

No. Threepio would never have a girlfriend. He likes short, stumpy, incorrigibly exasperating (yet cute) male astromechs.

Yes, Coruscant is similar to Metropolis. I think that if the Director Fritz Lang was alive today, he would be in awe of what ILM and George Lucas, have done with the visuals for Coruscant in the Prequels.

I'm a fan of silent German Horror/Sci-Fi films and Metropolis is a great film. Other little pieces from Metropolis can be seen in the Star Wars Universe, such as Rotwang (the creator of the robot) losing his hand when creating the robot and creating a black robotic hand, much like Luke's.

I feel that some may apply my signature to George Lucas as well. I think I sometimes do.

I know the original version of the film showed how Rotwang lost his hand, but does that footage still exist?

I'm just happy that the computer chip was invented, otherwise we would need people to do the jobs the workers in Metropolis did. Which were all tiring, repetitive, and above all boring

And yea I figured GL might've taken the mechanical hand idea from there as well

Another fun fact, the Batman movie with the climactic battle against the joker on the cathedral is taken right out of Metropolis

    Freder Frederson, unfortunate name

I Love German Expressionistic movies. MEtropolis especially. A great movie that kind of cloned metropolis is Dark City! That movie kicks butt, i recommend it to the highest degree.

Many people forget also the city-world of Trantor from Isaac Asimov's Foundation series started in 1951.

    Vaderslament:

Yes, I have read the first part in the Foundation series and Trantor and Coruscant do have many parallels eg. both covered in city & capital of the Galactic Empire. The series also has many links with the whole Star Wars universe.

VadersLament is right. I love the parallels with the Foundation series: Trantor/Coruscant is the rotting core of the old order; salvation will come from an underpopulated planet on the opposite side of the galaxy.
