Luke must've sold his landspeeder for about 2000 credits

so if its a little less than half price, a new speeder costs 5000?

if so a starship that costs 10,000 is just double the price of a new landspeeder?

IIRC, if you listen carefully you can hear what price Luke gets for it. It wasn't much since Luke's speeder was an outdated model.

Doesn't the radio drama state what price Luke got for his speeder?

Maybe that's where I heard it from.

it's 2,000 credits, I believe..said so in the film last night by way of omission:

Obi-wan: "We can give you two thousand now..."

And then they go and sell Luke's speeder. I'm guessing Obi-Wan and Luke didn't have any money when they were talking to Han, so the landspeeder is worth 2,000.

Although rpices in the EU seem to be quite off-80,000 or so for a new TIE, when an F-15 these days here costs around 50 mill?

Possibly something that is lost in the conversion from Credits to Dollars, not to mention TIE's were mass produced and cheaply constructed. An X-Wing would probably be a better comparison to an F-15, in terms of cost (not function).

Also, Luke's comment that you could almost buy a ship for 10k was probably referring to a civilian craft, not a commercial or military quality one. Essentially the eqivilent to the various two seater private planes and such people seem to be able to get for a few grand on earth.

I thought the TIEs were military vehicles? Military vehicles aren't usually easy to find.

There is no evidence that I know of that indicates how much money Obi-Wan had with him when they arrived at Mos Eisley. Obviously it was less than 2000 credits, because Obi-Wan says "you'll have to sell your speeder" in order to come up with the money.

Also -- Obi-Wan surely knew how much money he had, and yet he voluntarily came up with the $2000 figure as the amount of money he could pay Han. (He could easily have said 1000 now and 16,000 when we reach Alderaan, the bargain would have been basically the same for Han.) My guess is that Obi-Wan didn't have a lot of experience buying and selling speeders, and probably didn't have Kelly's Blue Book in his pocket, so he had to feel fairly certain that they could get the necessary extra money in exchange for the speeder quickly. Their need for quick action obviously would put them at a disadvantage with regard to bargaining, so Obi-Wan could not be counting on getting top dollar for the speeder -- rather, he was simply counting on getting something reasonable for it in a hurry.

All of thes things lead me to believe that the money they got for the speeder was (1) probably not an accurate reflection of its true market value, and (2) probably not the entire 2000 credits they needed to pay Han to get off Tatooine.

According to the Star Wars RPG:

    Landspeeder: 10 550 new, 2500 used

    TIE: 60 000 new, 25 000 used

    X-Wing: 150 000 new, 65 000 used

Also, according to starwars.com, Luke and Obi-Wan DID receive 2000 credits for his speeder.

    Wait a minute.

When Luke says that they could almost buy their own ship for that price, isn't he simply exaggerating to make the point that they're being overcharged?

Not at all... a base version of the Falcon sells for around 25 000 for a used one... :)

EDIT: to put in the disclaimer "in the RPG"... :)

I was just wondering where they were going to get the other 15,000 to give to Han for when they reached Alderaan. Was Leia's father going to pay for the rest or did Obi Wan have it stashed somewhere?

It's obvious the rebellion would have compensated Han like they did when they gave him his reward money on YavinIV.

As some other posters have noted, for all we know Ben had 1900 (or more) in money. Luke could have sold his speeder for less than 100.

Obi-Wan must have believed they'd find the money to get off Tatooine somehow. He'd seen Qui-Gon solve the same problem the first time he'd been there.

And don't forget plan B: sell Threepio! :D

All this debate is fascinating but no one has really considered that all of your figure could be wrong...who knows if it was measured in dollars or euros?

    or maybe yen...

    Ponder that.

In the radio drama Ben uses the Force to up the price a bit much like Qui Gon tried to do with Watto.
