Just got a new laptop which is wireless ready, so I wanna set it up so I can use my broadband connection at home without a wire (hence wire-less)

Tutorials seem to be really complicated. I'm sure someone here has done it.

    Please help :)

Do you have a wireless router to connect to your broadband connection?

Not too much, I got mine off Amazon for about £30-40. Really easy to set up, just plug into your modem, put the software on a PC if you have on and hopefully your Laptop should start geting a singnal

I tried networking with a wireless. I gave up and plugged everything in eventually. You trip over more, but it's less hassle, and you don't lose the signal everytime someone walks between you and the router.

Simple answer is don't. We bought one to connect two laptops, and a PC on a home network along with a printer. As a result we got intermitent, slow-speed connections, and the printer would randomly start printing from next doors PC.

Wires are easier (and cheaper!), plus you don't have the whole issue of filling your house with radio-waves (if that at all bothers you of course).

My friend recently cancelled his broadband ISP contract.

He naturally thought why pay for a contract, when his next door neighbour didnt add any security or password his wireless network - so he was able to get on his wireless laptop at his next door neighbours expense. His neighbour hasnt figured it out just yet. [face_devil]

He called it 'two for the price of none'. [face_shhh]

Hmmm. Maybe I will stick with wires for now. Spaghetti junction under my desk has a certain appeal that makes me look like I know what I am doing with technology. ;)

Wireless is only ok if your not sharing the connection, because my does go really slow when all the computer in my house are running

I'd wait before getting a wireless router. The new routers will be out next year (with a little luck) and while they might be more expensive they'll be able to do 600mbps.

If you can't wait, go for a cheap g or super g one.

Either way, I'd be enclined to get one with a built in ethernet switch so that it can be used with a wired network as well. This also works as a back up if your wireless network card or you want to use it in a room that's too far away from the router.

When you get the router there will be instructions that will tell you how to set it up. If it's too hard then find someone locally who can come round and do it for you. :)

Hopefully one day wireless broaband will be broadcast everywhere like televsion, radio etc. Then you would be able to take your laptop anywhere and connect, that would be so cool and easy.

If you do get a Wireless Reuter, make sure that you encrypt it and use a strong key for the wireless encryption, also password all your computers and other reuters that you may have, dont want anyone air snorting and seeing what informations been passed by with them wireless waves ;)

I'm posting using someone else's connection!!

    Sweet!
