    Curmudgeon

A curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is undeserved. They're neither warped nor evil at heart. They don't hate mankind, just mankind's absurdities. They're just as sensitive and soft-hearted as the next guy, but they hide their vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy. They ease the pain by turning hurt into humor. . . . . . They attack maudlinism because it devalues genuine sentiment. . . . . . Nature, having failed to equip them with a servicable denial mechanism, has endowed them with astute perception and sly wit.
Curmudgeons are mockers and debunkers whose bitterness is a symptom rather than a disease. They can't compromise their standards and can't manage the suspension of disbelief necessary for feigned cheerfulness. Their awareness is a curse.
Perhaps curmudgeons have gotten a bad rap in the same way that the messenger is blamed for the message: They have the temerity to comment on the human condition without apology. They not only refuse to applaud mediocrity, they howl it down with morose glee. Their versions of the truth unsettle us, and we hold it against them, even though they soften it with humor.

    Curmudgeon

    I can't hide, no
    On the mantle
    I'm not sad
    Until I'm home

    It's the season
    I'm all reason
    I have seen
    All I have grown

    Sheared at the seams
    Cheat on me
    And not seen
    At the seams

    I'm a lender
    I'm a planter
    I put something
    In the garden

    In the handle
    On the mantle
    I met Santa
    I met God

    I'm a lady
    Can you save me?
    It's the sulfur
    I have grown

    'Tis the season
    I'm all reason
    I have fleas
    So run on home

I simply hate curmudgeous old men and women. They always seem to have something against the youth - be it the clothing they can not understand; the pre-judged lack of respect etc. And when they spot a teenager in their path, they figure out a way to ruin this person's peaceful walk home. It has happened to me and it has probably happened to you, if you are under 20.

My father lives in an 8-floor building. The population mostly consists of elder people; and that fact has either created problems, or warm, fuzzy feelings. The building we live in is inhabited by two perfectly opposite elder females. The other is nice, kind and caring - the ideal, iconic grandmother. Yet the other, curmudgeon, was a real problem when I was some 12 years old. For one, she never let my friends enter the elevator - and they always had to run all the 8 floors up in order to reach our apartment. Why? Because they did not live in the building. Also this same person always had something nasty to say about me; be it the smell I spread, the clothes I wore or how disrespectively I greeted her.

You can quess which one I hated.
