Does anyone know how this was done in the original series? I'd like to replicate it as accurately as possible.

Oh man- if you're making a Battlestar Galactica fanfilm I just might have to name my next kid after you. Can't help you out with the Cylon effect though, but good luck!

You might try contacting some of the Battlestar Galactica fan sites. I bet at least one of those costumers has a voice chip he built do modify the sound. Perhaps he has a method using software. Dunno.

    That's definitely a tough one.

A quick google found this site.

    http://www.hyperdynelabs.com/scifi.htm

It's a plug in for Cool Edit, but it looks like it's nagware, so technically it's free. They have a sample of the Cylon effect on the page and sounds pretty close.

Here's a download of Cool Edit 96 which is also free.

The hyperdyne plugin also makes other SciFi sound effects that could be used for custom Star Wars effects too.

I think I remember seeing a soundforge plugin for that... Cant find it, hmmm.

Cylons are cool. The new cylons are very cool.
Super battle droids are uber cool!

I'll keep checkin on this one.. the effect i'm thinkin of should be adjustable to try a battle droid voice too.

    Roger? Roger?

    Tweekie from Buck Rogers?
    (um, no. maybe not.)
    :)

Use a vocoder with some ring modulation.
