Which do you prefer? I prefer Mon Calamari, because that's what I am most used too and think sounds the best.

"Dac" is apparently one of the many names of the planet Mon Calamari.

Dac is the name that the Squidheads like, since they detest the Mon Cal's and having the planet named after them is infuriating to them..

Dac is the local name. Mon Calamari is what humans call it-- the basic word for it, I reckon. Calamari is just a shorter version.

It just started to bug me when I was on Wookieepedia, and everything calls it Dac and I didn't have a clue what was going on.

I think they call it "Dac" on Wookieepedia just to make it easier to differenciate between that and the species, and I can't argue with that.

"Calamari" originated with GODV, did it not? Can't say that I'm a big fan of that one.

Dac came from a few sources and Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds, I believe. It was Geonosis that stated Mon Calamari was the name given by humans, after the species. Dac was the name given to the planet by the Mon Cals, the Quarren and all the other fish species that live there that happen to be sentient.

Sure, Dac sounds stupid, but I'll call it Dac if I have to write a Fanfic or something in-universe about it. I'll alternate otherwise.

No, Dac came from an earlier source, I think. It was retconned into an alternate name, right?

Yeah, Dac was the initial name for the planet waaaay back in 1983. Bantha Tracks was the source. (Of course, that issue also said Mon Cal were great chess players, so...)

I do like Dac though, especially when used by Quarren during the clone wars. Free Dac Volunteers sounds so much better than Quarren Isolation League.

Yeah, totally wrong. That fish-head still owes me twenty creds for when I took his king out in ten moves! :p

Dac is too simple. I can make 40 words from Fragile, but Dac?

Perhaps that is a good thing...

I prefer Dac over naming the planet for the species. I live on Earth, myself, not Human. Or perhaps Dolphin.

I like the sound of "Dac" better. It's also illustrative of one of the little things I like about Star Wars, that species aren't just named after their planets, like Star Trek does. Wookiees are from Kashyyyk, Twi'leks are from Ryloth, Selkath from Manaan, and Mon Calamari and Quarren from Dac.

Exactly. Dac was the name all the sentients that lived there called it before first contact with outside species. Since the Mon Cals are very outgoing and the Quarren very xenophobic, early contact with the outside galaxy tended to happen through the Mon Cals.

Hence, outsiders call it Mon Calamari whereas natives call it Dac.

Wookiepedia, by the way, has a policy of always using the native form of the name, so Dac it is on that front. It seems like most of the official sources seem to be migrating to Dac. Give it a few years and I'm sure that's what all the references will be.

Maybe Calpatine can come along and force the name Mon Calamari onto the planet...

    Calpatine?

Assuming you're referring to the Emperor, I believe he prefers naming planets "Mine."

That particular one was Ackbar. There was another phrase that Ibitsame said that I liked, but can't remember it.
