    Title: Dark Guardian
    Author: VaderLVR64
    Characters: Vader, Ryoo
    Genre: Vignette, AUish
    Timeframe: Ten years post RoTS
Summary: We cannot atone for all our sins
Notes: Very odd plot bunny, and written mostly for my own enjoyment. I?m a sucker for ?He?s not bad all the way through!? stories about Vader. :p

    Dark Guardian

?Lord Vader,? the servant said softly. ?The young lady is here.?

?Show her in,? Vader replied without turning form his perusal of Imperial City. In a way, the city planet was his as much as Palpatine?s, and there were moments that he found a sort of strange proprietary comfort in gazing upon it. It soothed him to think that he had been left with something at least.. It was not love or family, true, but a Sith had little need for those things in any case. Instead, he had this glittering jewel of a galaxy; it was his to admire and covet, his to protect. His to share for the time being, but that too, was a temporary condition.

He heard the doors open behind him but did not turn ? not yet. The Sith Lord needed a moment to gather his thoughts, and perhaps his courage if he was to be honest with himself. Honesty with himself was still a sore point for the Dark Lord, even after all these years, for he found it a painful and fruitless exercise. Mentally chiding himself for his cowardice, he turned and was once more very grateful for the mask that hid him from the galaxy.

The young woman bowed, giving him the respect his position demanded and not one iota more. Lord Vader found a reluctant smile stretching the scar tissue of his face, a small pain, though one of which he was very much aware. It was not often that Darth Vader found cause to smile, and even now, it was a melancholy smile that made his face feel tight and false.

?Thank you for coming,? he said.

    *************

?Thank you for coming,? Lord Vader said in that odd mechanical voice that she imagined must feature in the nightmares of those who were enemies of the Emperor. Even more than Palpatine, Darth Vader was the face of the Empire.

She nodded her head, acknowledging his greeting. ?I was summoned, my lord,? she said softly. You brought me here and you know I dared not refuse! So why don?t we end this little game and get to the real reason I?ve been brought here. Her face remained serene and composed, only the clenching of her hands in the folds of her skirt betrayed her disquiet.

Ryoo stared at the enigmatic and malevolent figure in black armor. For years now, this tall, hulking figure had been the source of a family mystery. Though no explanation had ever been given, agents reporting to Darth Vader had appeared when her family was in need.

Almost eight years ago, when her mother had given birth prematurely to a tiny baby boy, and the little boy had needed an innovative surgery on his heart that was beyond even the skilled medics of Naboo. Not long after the grim diagnosis, an Imperial shuttle had landed on Naboo, taken her mother and brother to Imperial City where little Ruwee was given the lifesaving operation he needed. That was not the only time that anonymous aid had been rendered to the Naberries, but it was certainly the most dramatic.

Through sources that cultivated by his dead daughter, Ruwee Naberrie soon learned that the shuttle had belonged to none other than Darth Vader. This had caused nothing short of a firestorm of confusion to blaze through the family, for in their eyes Lord Vader was as contemptible as the Emperor. This fascinating discovery had piqued Ruwee?s interest and further digging had revealed the fascinating fact that Darth Vader seemed to be somehow involved in every case of unexplained assistance to the Naberrie family. Grandmother Jobal felt that Lord Vader must have known her daughter Padmé at one time, and did honor to her by watching over her family since Padmé could not. Grandfather Ruwee seemed to accept that explanation, but Ryoo had seen the doubt in his eyes when they discussed it. Whatever his theories were, he had not chosen

    That was haunting! Great vignette.

I can really see Vader doing that, looking out for the Naberries. [face_love] Ryoo is quite perceptive, isn't she? ;)

?Why would that one death bother me more than the countless others I?ve caused?? The words were callous, but the voice? The voice spoke of heartache and loss.

?That is a question only you can answer, Lord Vader.?

    :_| :(

    Once again, great work! =D=

I?m a sucker for ?He?s not bad all the way through!? stories about Vader.:p

Well, so am I and I loved this.

Through sources that cultivated by his dead daughter, Ruwee Naberrie soon learned that the shuttle had belonged to none other than Darth Vader. This had caused nothing short of a firestorm of confusion to blaze through the family, for in their eyes Lord Vader as contemptible as the Emperor.

    I can only imagine.

Even now, she could remember the Jedi?s ready smile and beautiful blue eyes.

    Loved that description.

He too was dead and perhaps even at Vader?s hand.

Not that far from the truth.

She looked back once over her shoulder and wondered why the big shoulders trembled.

    I loved that ending[face_love] [face_plain] :( :_| so sad.

    Great job as always VaderLVR64 =D= =D= =D=

*applauds* That was so beautiful! It was so sweet to see that Vader still watched out for her family, yet heartbreaking that they couldn't know the truth. Again, wonderful work.

This is beautiful. The title is perfectly fitting. I've been curious for a while about how Vader would react/respond to Ryoo and this fits into what I can see happening. I can see him doing something like this. I can easily see him looking out for Padmé's family as a means to try and atone himself.

I love the idea of Vader looking after Padme's family - mainly because it would keep that little bit of Anakin alive in him.

    Wonderful story

Wow, that was wonderful, Vadey! Ryoo is a braver girl than I, that's for sure! [face_skull]

I really like the idea of Vader keeping an eye on the Naberries - I truly think he would always seek to remedy the terrible injustice he committed against Padme on Mustafar. He loved her too much not to, you know?

Great, great work! Your writing is addictive - even more so than chocolate!! :p

Siaynoqsbride Thank you! It's been nagging at me for a while, and I finally wrote it.

    DarthIshtar Thanks for reading.

Star_Angel Yes, I always see a bit of Anakin inside the dark armor. :p

    pink_saber_girl Thank you! [:D]

Daenarrah Exactly! He couldn't do anything for Padme or their child, but he could at least assist her family, even though he could not give them the truth.

Roain_Xantos Thank you for reading! :D

KELIA Yes it would, and that piece would be there for Luke to awaken.

VA_Parky Nothing's more addictive than chocolate, but I appreciate the compliment. ;) Especially since I like YOUR work so much!

    Just perfect, K! :)

The idea that Vader continued to watch over Padme's family is both intriguing and eerie. And I love how Ryoo is following in her aunt's footsteps. They seem to have so much in common - bravery, desire to serve.

He too, was dead and perhaps even at Vader?s hand.

And in a sense, that is true. :_|

    As always, a masterpiece. :D

Oh very interesting plot bunny indeed, but awesome nevertheless.

I liked Ryoo in this...Vader's "service" to the Naberries is quite suspicious (on their part) and it's funny how he doesn't seem to cover his trail all that efficiently...;)

I loved it VaderLVR64. Very unique and somewhat haunting...As if you know what's going on, but can't quite figure it out...

Now I'm just messing myself up! No I got it, and it was wonderful! :p
