I'm about 1/3 of the way through "Darth Bane: Rule of Two", and Jedi Master Farfalla says to Johun, his new apprentice, that he has "been summoned to Coruscant to meet with Chancellor Valorum." This is on page 65 of the hardback release.

This being what, a thousand years before the classic era? Must be a different Valorum. Was it a political dynasty, or did Karpyshyn goof?

Nah. Same guy. When 1000 years old you reach, look this good, you will not! Humph.

A dynasty of well-intentioned politicians. Then they get blacklisted and killed off. Go figure.

Ah. Well then, there should be a new Valorum in the current line.

Well, it's a funny story really, there was this masterful manipulator called Palpatine...

    They died with Finis.

Though I'd love for there to be an evil clone of Finis called Zod: "Come to me, son of Skywalker..." [face_whistling]

Hm. I do enjoy it when the EU unintentionally backs up Lucas's creating choices like that. How fitting a name.

It's not unintentional. Lucas' character, Finis Valorum, was supposed to come from a legendary line of important political figures, so when Daniel Wallace wrote the New Essential Chronology, he invented one of those prominent ancestors - Tarsus Valorum, the first Supreme Chancellor of the post-Ruusan era.

No, I didn't mean the surname (which incidentally also blatantly notes how well-intentioned they were), I meant "Finis." Finito, that is. End of both a long lineage as well as the Republic.

    It still looks intentional.

No, finis is finis. Finito comes from finis. Finis is Latin for "the boundary or the end" and valorum is pseudo-Latin meant to look like a second declension plural genitive: i.e. "of the valiant (plural)".

So Finis Valorum is literally "the last of the valiant" with an implied chancellor coming after. Interesting.

Yes, with valiant meaning courageous but also honorable.

A very deliberate choice of name indeed.

He did not have sexual relations with that woman.

    I liked Finis. :(

There's nothing ingenuious about it. The number of things in Star Wars that comes from greek fabrication or latin is preposterously high.

And yes, House Valorum is a political dynasty. A predecessor 350yrs allowed the Trafed to rise that long ago. I was under the impression a thousand years ago there was a Hutt chancellor . . .

Notice how I shortened that from Trade Federation. You never see abbreviations in SW books. Ingenious of me, no? [face_batting]

Really? Imperial lingo is rife with them. You need to read more quality EU, Excellence.

I only read quality EU, Jello. That's why I read so little now. :p

Now that I've become aware of it the recent year, there's a massive amount of words and names taken from greek fabrication, latin words, and a few other minor sources. It was Erikson that got me wondering . . . when I realised his famous Raraku desert of his series was in fact something from Easter Island, and knowing he's a historian, I became aware of it in SW too.

TradeFed was grudgingly abbreviated very sporadically in Cloak of Deept, yes. But back to the topic, was a Hutt chancellor Teal'c indeed a thousand years ago?

    Ours aren't either.

You have to hunt for the good stuff. Sometimes you get lucky, like when you get 4 AJs for $4 each.
