    Darth Maul Questions

How old is Darth Maul. What is his real name? Is his skin red? Or did he tattoo both the black and the red? What color is his natural eye color? Other Zabarks have brown eyes.

Can anyone else think of any other questions? :)

He did have tatoos, that was not his natural skin color.

He's in his early thirties - as Bruce Lee would agree, the very peak of his physical abilities. I can't remember his real name, sorry. No, his skin is a sort of creamy/brown colour (he's the same species as Eeth Koth, the horned Jedi in Phantom Menace). Yes, he tattoed his entire body as devotion to his Master and the Sith. Don't know about his natural eye colour - I always assumed he used contacts to complete the terrifying effect, but Anakin shows up with those same eyes in the RotS trailer, so who knows? They may be his natural eyes now. Sidious, in his Sith form, also has yellow(ish) eyes.

Might be able to find this info in the EU boards. Which I always find funny since the EU is everything outside the movies, so this whole website is part of the EU :p So everyone posting on this web site is particpating in the EU hehehe :p

I deduced that Maul was in his early thirties (not 30 exactly) because Lucas said he was in the prime of his life. Bruce Lee said that the absolute physical prime of your life is reached at the age of 32.Ray Park is 30 this year, although that is no indication of the character's age - look at Qui-Gon - he is around sixty, but Liam Neeson is in his forties.

So, no, I don't have a link for you. All I have to offer as proof is common sense.

His name was Khameir Sarin, for the guy who asked.

Somewhere I got the impression that Maul was more in his 20's. It's been so long, though, that I can't remember exactly where I read or heard it. I know supposedly he had not long been cleared by his Master to take on more challenging tasks and had newly been given his ship to carry out the missions. That, at least in part, came from that Journal: Darth Maul (or whatever that book was called that was out around the time of TPM).

Anyway, I don't think he was in his 30's yet...but I wouldn't take my word for it until I can find the material I read to make me think that. ;)

The ship first appears (chronologically, anyhow) in Star Wars: darth maul (yes, imaginatively named, I know), a comic book from DH in 02 or so.

The Darth Maul journal is pretty interesting. You find out how much of a sadist Sidious is.

I also thought he looked younger than 30's...I'd also have to say he's in the 22-26 range, methinks...

But here's a question: Why'd he let his teeth get so gnarly? It would be uncomfortable, and painful, and look at Darth Tyranus: pearly white! (I'm sure he just did it to look cool!) :)

That's probably just because of his species.

i figured he was supposed to be in his early thirties, because i think in the duel he was supposed to be a mix of Obi Wan's youthfulness and Qui Gonn's experience. it makes sense to me. it might have been the tmp novel that reinforced this idea, though i doubt it says that directly

A sizeable portion of text containing information on Darth Maul's true early history got scissored out of Terry Brooks's TPM novelization in the galleys-phase -- here's a Cinescape Online article on the material circa February 1999, prior to the hedgeclippering:

    The Mysteries of the Sith

You may have noticed backstory information from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace popping up on fan web sites courtesy of anonymous sources in recent days. One such source contacted the Insider with a little bit of background detail on Darth Maul and the Sith. What follows isn't really spoiler material since won't be seen on the big screen (think tie-in material). Still, those of you who want to go into the movie knowing absolutely nothing (and those of you uninterested in Star Wars trivia, for that matter) should probably move on to another story just to be safe.

    Still here? Okay.

One quick glance at Darth Maul reveals that he's some sort of alien. Horns, strange facial markings and those eerie yellow eyes give that much away. According to this source, Maul (whose "real" name is Khameir Sarin) is from a species called "Zabrak." Observant Star Wars fans might have noticed that there is a similarly horned member of the Jedi Council. He's a Zabrak too, named Eeth Koth.

So how did Darth Maul/Khameir Sarin get caught up in the black arts, anyway? Apparently, after a long search for a suitable apprentice, Darth Sidious discovered the young Force user on the Zabrak homeworld, Iridonia, when Khameir was just twelve years old. Sidious forced the lad to lay a trap for some of his friends. This ambush ended up killing seven Jedi Knights, and the after effects transformed Sarin into the second of the two Dark Lords of the Sith.

The Sith themselves were apparently formed 2,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace by a rogue Jedi Knight (never mind those comic books, I guess). Their numbers swelled, but the evil Force wielders battled each other as much as they did the Jedi. Then a Dark Lord named Darth Bane changed the rules: From his time forward there would be only two Dark Lords at a time, a master and an apprentice. Because of this rarity of Sith, the Jedi Knights of pre-Phantom Menace time rarely used their lightsabers to duel. More often than not, the weapons would be used to deflect blaster shots or (presumably) for ornamental purposes.

The stuff about his name being Khameir Sarin is from supershadow. Make of that what you will.

Nah, that's in the Darth Maul journal. In his journal, he also says that Sidious took him when he was a baby.

"SuperShadow" claims creatorship over many things. Including, but not limited to, the recent tsunami, bread, farming, irrigation, and the U.S. Constitution.

As stated above, the "Khameir Sarin" name originated with Terry Brooks.

Lucasfilm (or more likely Lucas himself) made the decision to keep Maul's origins a near-total mystery; thus, the last-second edits made to the novelization manuscript.

i don't remember it in the journal either...although i guess i didn't read it as thoroughly. I know it says Sidious found him as a baby on Irondia, if so how would he know his former name?

He says that Sidious told him, but his 'name has no meaning for him'.

    Sound familiar, anyone? :p
