I'm of the mind lightsabers cauterize as they cut.

Why then, was there a spray of blood when Obi Wan cut him?

From what I recall, that was added as it wasn't visually clear that he was dead.

I may be completely wrong though.

Interesting. Do you know where you heard that from? Was it in the commentary?

Again, this is completely from memory, but I seem to recall it being a reaction from a test screening.

That said, they might have added the being cut in two instead of the blood.

Check out the dude's arm in ANH that Obi-Wan lops off. Plenty of blood on the ground; lightsabres don't always cauterize. And really-the number of lightsabre injuries we actually got to see in the OT (ie, the experiences people had before TPM to judge the characteristics of lightsabres on flesh.) aren't much of a basis for stating that lightsabres always cauterize....we have Bar Thug's arm (bloody injury) Obi-Wan (disappears) Luke's hand (no blood) and Vader's arm (electronic) for examples. Only one of them really shows that lightsabres cauterize. And it's not like the human body just gushes blood in response to injury, either.

Human bodies tend to stiffen and tense up to restrict blood flow; a comparatively minor (as opposed to being cut in half :p) injury like the removal of a hand by as fine a cutting edge as a lightsabre might not result in a great deal of obvious blood flow. Plus there's the fact that LUke kept his forearm pointing upwards; this would lessen bloodflow as well.

Lightsabres cauterizing flesh is by no means always a certainty.

Also throw into the equation that Zabrak blood is different from Homosapien blood.

Once in awhile this question is asked - and one of the factors the EU officiandos put forth is the "hot-blooded" or "mercury style" composition of Lord Maul's bodily fluids.

You're right. It has been explained on the DVD, IIRC.

Yes. It was added to clarify that the dude was fatally wounded.

There's no blood as he's falling and splitting into two so clearly it was cauterized as a lightsaber would do. However when you look at that particular scene it's more of a faint mist of blood. Like some Sith Tag spray or something. I would imagine that since his body is humanoid that he's got blood pumping and when that body is cut in two that that blood has to go somewhere. Lightsabers cauterize quickly hence a mist of blood. Now if it was Mel Gibson in Braveheart he'd have a sword and when that happened you'd see a close-up of Maul's boots being soiled in a waterfall of blood and he'd probably kick him anyways.

    Kicked him?

    "THIS. IS. NABOOOOOO!"

Doesn't really have the same ring to it I think.

It must be on the extras, then. I'm almost sure I saw it on the DVD.

Maybe Obi Wan just likes to turn down his sabre to see the satisfaction of blood [face_shame_on_you]

Now that Zabrak have been involved in TCW, they should have one get stabbed and show a faint mist, to canonize the species-centric argument. Though i believe the test-audience thing, it'd be cool to have an in-universe explanation too.

I know that it's on cartoon network so they probably wouldn't show blood. But in the last episode a clone was cut in half by BLAST DOORS (off-screen but just barely) so a faint mist really wouldn't be so bad.

I disagree with the test audiences though, i think it's kinda neat to have it not obvious till he splits apart. It has that 'Samurai slices someone and they fall seconds later' appeal.

All that extra work for nothing. [face_not_talking]

Season 4 will show us how the red stuff was actually a healing mist that Maul released upon the blade's impact!! [face_dancing]

I really like Maul, but dead is dead. And dude was definitely killed in TPM; cut clean in half right through the stomach area, then falling a long distance as two separate halves. It's not enough to just put new robo-legs on someone who was cut in half right through their stomach. Not sure what possible ideas TCW has to explain this, other than somebody lying about him still being alive... but it just seems like a bad idea to go there.

Anyway, I don't see this shot as going against the lightsaber cauterization idea that is supported by all other shots except for the Ponda Baba de-arming in the cantina. The blood spray from Maul could just be released because the impact was so quick and hard (and through major portions of the body, not just an arm), and then no more blood came out after that because the cauterizing took place immediately after.

Dead should be dead, except when it happens in Star Wars.

You're forgetting all the people that Luke waives his light saber in front of in RotJ. Appartently you don't even have to cut people with it to make them die.

I really wish they would fix that to make his lightsaber actually go through some people in one of the umpteen releases.

Forget the sabers... The Tatooine-face-kick is the best shot to the grille, in cinematic history. That boot was epic.

Ok, but then the rest of the PT when someone is cut they're cauterized. Dooku. Anakin. Obi Wan [he's cut on the leg and the arm, I believe]. Jango. etc.

Plus you have different species, like all of the jedi cut down by Sidious in ROTS.

And my feeling is that the bloody hand in ANH was simply a mistake in that it hadn't been thought through at that point.

As far as restricting blood flow, his artery was severed. If it wasn't cauterized, there would have been tons of blood, not none.

And a lightsaber has no edge. It burns through things. That's how it cuts [as I understand it].

but I don't think the kind of blood matters. Is the skin burned or not? Has the wound been covered by melted flesh or not? The kind of blood shouldn't matter.

but it doesn't cauterize quickly, it cauterizes as its cutting.

This post has made me think of a possibility.

If the lightsaber literally melts the skin and it is so hot it's liquid for a second, I suppose a bit of blood could be released, but it would be mixed with skin and I don't know how it would spray, not to mention it would cool rapidly and harden.

although as some have said, it's un
